Brink breaks my internet

Post » Wed Sep 30, 2009 8:09 am

Here's one for you tech guru's.

I browse for a server, join it, and while loading after the "press any key" prompt I get "waiting for host". At this point, the internet in my entire house goes out. No one else can use the internet at the exact moment I "press any key". As soon as I time out from the server the connection is restored.

I tried to join enough times this morning that I think I broke Time Warner cable in my area because when I called TWC they told me that there was an issue in my area. Yeah, the issue was me pressing any key to continue! It went away this afternoon but now this evening the issue is back. I try to join a server and the internet is my house is gone.

Is the game overloading my router?

Router: CG814WG Netgear.
ISP: Time Warner Cable (Roadrunner)

Any help is appreciated. Let me know if I can provide additional information.

Having the same problem myself, although, if i join a game in around <30 secs after searching for servers, everything's dandy; save my ATI card shenanigans.

BC2 has the same issue with buggy dsl routers, try disabling uPnP on your router and see if that helps.

Try the uPnP fix jobyjoby but if not replace your router with one that aint broken is likely to be the fix I'm afraid.

Got the same problem, as do a lot of people.

The uPnP thing does nothing, putting your PC in a DMZ or not using a router at all does nothing to solve the problem either.

My router is a DIR-655 from DLink, which isn't exactly a no-name or cheap router.

Sorry but you can give all the assurances you like, but fact is if something on your network can crash or otherwise cause your router to drop the network connection you router is buggy.

An anology for you would be if you put ready meal in a microwave and it stopped working randomly. Is that the ready meal's fault or is the microwave broken? Clearly its the microwave, as the ready meal shouldn't be able to do anything to the microwave to stop it working.

I'm sorry if you don't understand basic hardware / software interaction on networks, but as someone who runs an actual network I can tell you with 100% confidence that if we had one of our routers crashing due to traffic created by a specific application then we would be straight on to the router manufacture for a fix and NOT the application developer. Network traffic is just bits on the wire and if a certain combination of said bits causes a crash, its the network hardware that's bugged.

If you don't want to accept that, its your loss not mine :(

If that is so, how come I can join every other game online? Answer that my good sir. BF2142, BF2, BFBC2, WoW, CSS, Age of Empires, Homefront, Fifa, CoD series. All of these works online(Can come up with more if it's needed for you). So how can you blaim router? Is it only this game which does so that my router is broken? If so this games internet connection is set up retardedly, and it shouldn't be as I paied 50 euroes for the game, to only have some crap which doesn't even work. Yay.

I don't understand how hard it can be to release a game where basics as connecting to a server is not working properly for everyone.

The answer is it makes no difference if packet X, packet Y or packet Z works on your router if packet A crashes it, its broken simple as that.

If you had three friends joe, bob and alex and if alex sat in your car it refused to start is alex broken or is it the car? joe and bob can sit in the car and the car starts so clearly the car is fine. NO the car is broken as it doesnt matter who sits in it, it should start.

So please explain me why people get the same problem while not using a router at all. What you says makes no sence what so ever. If you would be reading up the problem, you would see that there are many with the same problem. I find it hard to believe that x routers just is "broken" as this game is released. And some guy with same problem tried without router just to encounter the same error.

Now cba to talk about my "broken" router, cause its clearly not.

So they have no internet connection, that would be a bit of an issue ;-)

Seriously though if you have a box called a router or a box called a modem or just a card running some software its semantic, its still in essence a "router" aka a device that connects you to the internet. If an application that sends packets across said device to the internet can break it, then its failing to do its job.

Why would you think the game which generates the packets is at fault? They are just packets (blocks of information) nothing more nothing less. The routers job is to transfer those packets, so if it crashes when it sees packet X and disconnects you then its at fault.

What you might be thinking of is; if the game is loosing connection to the server or master service. Now if that's what your seeing then yes the game or the game infrastructure is at fault, but that's not the same as loosing internet totally which was what was reported here.

Does that help explain?

You, good sir, are an idiot.

If everything else works fine but one application there are issues with said application, telling the software developer to fix its code is the way to go here.

Also if alex is the only one who can't get the car to run it's clearly his fault, not the cars. He's obviously too stupid to start it up.

That being said, as someone mentioned in another thread, connecting to empty servers seems to work just fine, but as soon as there is a single player on the server it keeps crashing my connection.

I'm sorry you don't have the technical know how or basic common sense to understand the details of how networks work, and instead having to result to insults to cover up you lack of understanding, your loss not mine.
