Brink to be rated T For Teenagers?

Post » Mon Aug 30, 2010 1:44 pm

There was a topic nearly half a year ago about this so I made a fresh topic that had a poll and such.

I personally feel T is the best choice, bigger community, and even if you do M, younger players will still play. Just look at CoD and Halo, rated M yet full of younger players still. Also, I don't really care for six, nudity, intense blood and gore, torture, and etc that makes games rated M.

I'll do a pros and cons list as well, will add what I feel are good arguments.

Pros
  • Bigger Community

Cons
  • Younger players
  • No six, nudity, intense blood, and torture.

The Brink site still lists it as Rating Pending, can you link to an official announcement that Brink will be rated T?

It does sound like Splash Damage is aiming for a T rating but you give the impression this is a done deal.

From where I'm from it doesn't matter. A 7 year old can buy any game here or their parents will.

Well I've seen an interview where Paul said they're most likely aiming for teen. I guess I could've worded it more properly. I meant it as in how do people feel about if the game was rated T, you can adjust title to your liking. Here's a quote I found that contains what I heard also.

It will most likely be T. They already stated they are going for a teen rating. Also, their previous game (Quake Wars) was rated Teen as well, and followed the same class-based, team objective mechanics that Brink has. There is also this quote from Richard Ham:

"We really wanted to give a very intense feel to our firefights, with shot impacts that come across as punchy and powerful. That said, we didn’t want it to be gratuitous – excessive gore doesn’t really fit with the tone of Brink, a world where friends and brothers are reluctantly battling each other for what they see as a better future for all on the Ark.”

Take that information and mix it with the stylized rather than realistic graphics and the fact Brink is a new IP and SD's first multiple platform release (which tey would want to target as many people as possible) a T rating seems pretty obvious.

You started the thread... you would need to edit the post yourself sir. Go to the original post and do so.

Change the title to Brink possibly rated T for teenagers Etc etc

But you sound like you got some concrete info or something on the rating when you didn't.

i hate parents that let that happen :( though it is worse when the parents then complain on forums n [censored] that their children are hearing bad language while playing online in a mature rated game.

Well, T or M, does'nt matter, I will get BRINK.

But if they're trying to rate it T, then they will remove for example: Gore (not needed), Nudity (not needed), ''Mature'' language (this makes everything seem a wee bit silly for me), even if they rate it M, ''teens'' or anything under the T bracket will get BRINK through other means. I think I've said it before, if you've played Mass Effect 2 before, then you'll know how silly Jacob sounds in a fight.

''HAVE A NICE TRIP!''
''YOU'RE A MEAN MOTHER, HUH?!'', I really don't want the characters in BRINK saying stuff like that, and I don't think they will, but you get the idea, overly nice language in a warzone. They don't have to overdo it and make them say ''you [censored] son a [censored] [censored] i'll [censored] kill you and [censored] your [censored]'' in every sentence, and so on, but one or two ''mature'' words here and there, who would it hurt?

Don't put all in that pool. I've been playing rated M games since I was 6 and I'm one of the most non violent person irl. Sure, there's bad apples, but that's same with any community.

You can go with the Dante way of things, cocky and witty. I would rather be a person that is witty with smart remarks, then a wanna be hard guy who yells curse words 24/7.

As I said, they don't have to overdo it, but putting in one or two words into one or more of the phrases of the voice packs, then it would'nt do much than just boost the feel a little.

If your character gets shot and is almost dying, then I think it's pretty normal if he/she/it says something like ''[censored]'' or ''[censored]' [snip]

They don't have to overdo it and use phrases like the one I posted up there :P

And I have no idea of what cocky and witty phrases sounds like.

Probably something like, if you shot the [censored] out of someone your character saying "get up it's just a scratch" or something like that.

''look what the cat dragged in''
''you're not getting up from that''

I still think there is room for cursing :l

Oh come one, don't be a fusspot. We all know that SD are aiming for a Teen-Rating because they have mentioned it several times.

Also, I personally don't care wether it'll be M or T. People will play it regardless of the rating and violence is not a must for me. However, taking out some minor swearwords could hurt the immersion a bit. If that actually crosses the line between T and M. I mean, T-games may have "Strong language", don't they?

''YOU'RE A MEAN MOTHER, HUH?!?''

Taking out curse words ruins the atmosphere a wee bit, yeah :l

I thank you, Revoluzzer, for agreeing with me, I could'nt be more content than I am right now :>

And yeah, the people on this forum will probably get BRINK no matter the rating, it's the gameplay we're after, not the phrases, but they do add some to the atmosphere, which in the end is important for the game (in my opinion) We'll probably hear ''[censored]'' once or twice :P

Look guys the forum auto-censor is there for a reason and purposefully bypassing it is a warnable offense. I've just edited a number of posts and let those people slide but if it occurs any more I will be handing out warnings. If you're unclear on the rules please check them out.

Also, a discussion of racial slurs is not appropriate for the forums. I have deleted several posts, make sure I don't have to delete any more.

Your thread's subject is easily to interpet as a definitive fact rather than a question if this is the case. I have clarified it.

''HAVE A NICE TRIP!''
''YOU'RE A MEAN MOTHER, HUH?!''

Both of these quotes is when he uses biotics, not just taunting the enemy while shooting at them or being angry at them. And I think it's "Gravity's a mean mother huh?!"

I wouldn't say I'm the most non-violent person around, but I'm one of the least violent in actions. Doesn't stop me from wanting to kick people in the face, but I don't go through with it. I've played video games all my life, violent and non-violent. I've never been in a non-staged fight. Karate training matches yes, fights no.

Because I'm in Australia, the ESRB doesn't affect me. Over here, we'll get an MA 15+ rating (The highest we have for now) purely because it has guns in it. If they were laser guns, it might slip through with an M (one rating lower). But bullets turn practically anything into an MA 15+.

I hope there is some use of mature language. Doesn't need to be anything worse than, say, Back To The Future, or nothing more than a word here and there. But having a group of revolutionaries running round screaming http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GoshDangItToHeck would definitely ruin immersion. A few witty one liners and taunts can cover this up though, and completely remove any need for offensive language.

Blood isn't necessary, gibs won't be needed, swearing can be avoided. We'll still have teabagging 9 year olds whether this is rated M or T or E. So yes, I hope they don't add anything offensive purely to raise the rating. It isn't needed.

Honestly, the ESRB is a pretty fail system. Go to almost any public middle school/high school and then rate anything based on that. Teenagers are generally more crude and such then advlts.

Yeah I generally go to 2old2play to find other people to play with because I don't want to play with a bunch of kids that cuss and whine all the time.
