Brink IP

This is more like a comment on SD more than the game itself. I'm a big fan of SD and their games, since W:ET , then ETQW which I play often, and now their first very own IP. I remember when it was first annouced by SD that they were partnering with a very unlikely partner for their next then un-annouced game, Brink. This was way before Bethesda/zenimax started acquiring all these other developers. What's so awesome from SD is that they're often ahead of everyone else, in teaming with Beth/zenimax, but yet they're still the owners of the Brink IP. It surprises me that Zenimax hasn't bought SD like they did with so many other studios. i'm really more interested in Brink than in Rage for example.

I think that SD refused to be bought out, but presented an idea to Beth/Zenimax that they couldn't refuse to publish.

I'm just glad that SD doesn't have activision as publisher anymore.

Activision is becoming like EA, releasing the same game every year, with some minor fixes.

Neither does id. Yea, Activision only concerns itself with some IP's nowadays.

Ah, ok. Was that mentioned by gaming sites too, so I can see it? Seems interesting the SD wants to stay without a big publishing parner as owners, given the much bigger costs for games nowadays. And because now only studios that belong to Zenimax or publish with them can get id's engine technology for their games.

I think bethesda/Zenimax own the rights to Brink. The only thing that SD owns, is the rights to the SMART technology.

Thought Brink IP was completely owned by SD. The game itself was being promoted as their first original IP game, after all.

From a Q&A with Neil Alphonso:

Question: So who owns the rights to the IP?

Answer: Bethesda owns the IP rights.

Question: So what proprietary elements does Splash Damage control?

Answer: The SMART system is the biggest thing we own really.

Ah, ok then. But then that reassures the notion that id technology now available to Beth-owned titles. It'd be Interesting to see if SD publishes their next title after Brink under Beth/zenimax too.

Can't really blame activision. If I had a cash cow like CoD id milk those sweet udders all day.
That being said, good on SD for keeping a hold on their property. Reminds me of Bungie.
