Brink vs. Wolfenstein Enemy Territory

Post » Sat Feb 13, 2010 7:03 am

So, as an W:ET fan (playing since 2003 :D), I was really hipped to find abaut Brink like 1 year ago.
Now, I'm wondering, how is this game compared to W:ET?
Like, does it use PunkBuster and not stupid vac and steam, how big are the maps, is the combat fast paced as in W:ET, general feel of gameplay, etc.

I think Steam is required to play, so you have got to take VAC with it I'm afraid :/

Honestly, There is nothing wrong with Steam and VAC.
Back in 2003 there were some bugs but now its one of the most stable systems you can find.
Ofcourse some will mention MW2 but you cant blame VAC for that, Blame Infinity Ward for not bothering with dedicated servers which VAC works best with.

Objective based gameplay is comparable. Brink is going to be a very close quarters, fast paced game. Class based gameplay seems to be more important than W:ET, with every single class having objectives in every map.

Brink allows players to take more of a beating that most games out there, with only lights being comparable with health in most other games. Nothing is a one-hit-kill. Accuracy is not everything in this game, with spraying being a viable tactic, as most encounters are going to be close range. The focus is primarily on team play and working together.

One of the largest differences is the RPG level-up style of the game, rewarding abilities. There's also going to be lots of customization and unlockables. Each player will have a psudo-unique character, and a pair of guns modified to suit their own tastes.

In fact, many of the people who worked on W:ET are still a part of the team, as well as all of the people that made Quake Wars.

VAC. I think that broke my TF2. And my HL2 mods as well. Seriously, Steam doesn't connect. I don't want to see Brink running through Steam please.

You're not the only W:ET veteran here ;)

I think they mentioned that the standard 'walking speed' a little slower is than in W:ET, but the SMART system will make up for that.
Medics also give full health/health buffs in stead of 20hp. People can revive themselfes after receiving a syringe. Soldiers have a shielding ability and hand out ammo (No field ops) Soldiers are also able to blow certain things up. Engineers can deploy turrets and buff weapon damage. Operatives get a hacking tool. There's a lot more to say about class changes, don't know them all by hard.

Another major difference with W:ET is the introduction of body types. Lights move faster, have less health and can use 'less heavy weapons'. Light are limited to SMG's as primary and a pistol as secondary. Heavies will be able to use all weapons with a better secondary (F.e. mini gun + assault rifle). So in this game, you can be a medic with a grenade launcher (which is not OP)
The focus is more on teamplay: They designed the XP system to be more rewarding for people actually helping teammates.

Just to add to his post, "Short rifles" are also a light weapon. These are semi-auto or bolt action rifles with good accuracy. Similar to the Garand or K43 in W:ET. With weapon upgrades, you can give them a scope, to make them akin to a sniper, but headshots won't kill in one shot.

Each bodytype is able to carry one main weapon of up to their weight-class, and one weapon of a lower weight-class. Lights are limited to a light weapon and a sidearm, mediums can use up to a medium main and light secondary, and heavys are able to carry any weapon as their main, with a medium or lighter secondary.

Off the top of my head:
Sidearm - semi-auto pistols, machine pistols, revolvers
Light - SMGs, Short Rifles
Medium - Assualt rifles, pump action shotguns, single-shot grenade launchers
Heavy - Machine guns, Auto-shotties, "Automated Grenade Launchers", Even a minigun, maybe more

Ah damn, I HATE steam :(
Now the most important question which I forgot:
Does Brink have health points (RtCW and W:ET) or just that [censored]-run-to-cover-and-get-full health (Wolfenstein, CoD)?

You have a health bar which regenrates up to a certain point, but medics are the only people that can get you to full health (with buffs etc) and they also revive.

Ah I see.
So you start with 100% hp (or 95% like in W:ET?) and once you are hurt you can only get to lets say 75%, but a Medic is reguired to get you to 100%.
Thanks :D

Not exactly. You start with let's say 75% (Not exact, it depends on body type), when a medic buffs you, you get 100%. When you get damaged you can get back to 65% and when a medic heals you, you will have 100% again.

More guestions :D
Will there be any reused content from W:ET, like gun sounds (MP40 sound would be awesome on some assault rifle) and clothes that are similiar to W;ET or Blazkowicz's?
Next question, will it have the same [censored] as cod, when the reload when you fire up all your weapons is longer compared to reloading mid clip?

For weapons, take a look at http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1143894-brink-weapons/.
I saw some military coat on http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/22350/ss_0cf47bdf5f68e44639e4de2aed880a4224d38232.1920x1080.jpg. Is that what you think of?

Also reloading from an empty magazine does usually take longer, because you have to co.ck the weapon afterwards. If you fire all your shots, there is no round left in the chamber. If you reload mid-mag, there is, which means you don't have to co.ck before shooting again.

Da, but still in real life, if you would reload mid clip after firing like 7 bullets, you would loose all 23 if you would throw the mag away or you would get fcked up when you will think you have 30 bullets, but really only 6 are in the mag.
And thanks for the thread, never seen that vid before.
The coat looks badass, but I'm thinking more of standard Allied WW2 uniforms, http://www.gameogre.com/reviewdirectory/upload/Wolfenstein%20Enemy%20Territory.jpg like some ressistance dude would get it from his grand dad or steal it from a museum or some other silly explanation.

Like people have said before this isn't W:ET 2. This game takes place in like 2050 I think. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The art styles of both of the games are very very far away from each other. I personally can't see anyone using a WWII style set of clothing, the Security has ARK uniforms and the Resistance uses the scraps around Container City to make their armor I doubt anyone really has any WWII era clothing with them.

Brink's engine is highly modified specifically for brink. One of the programmers even said he would be surprised if any of the original code of the iDTech 4 engine remains. The models were made with the artstyle of brink and parkour in mind, same with the levels. The guns are alterations on real world guns, so they are unique to a point, and gunshots were recorded to have original source sounds for the weapons. So there is no reused content.

It was one of the more recent Video interviews on Brinkish, I'll try to find it.

Edit: I managed to find it in the 3rd video I looked at, cuz I remembered it was Richard Ham.

Also to add to this, not only do Soldiers hand out Ammo, they can hand out buffed ammo, such as Armor Piercing, which was stated in the Brink Explosive something interview. Sorry my memory isn't quite catching on the exact video, but it explained that Soldiers can also hand out special ammo types too.

Indeed, you're right. I'm still wondering how this will work out exactly.

I believe handing out different out specific ammo types is in itself a perk, and you would just have to press the corresponding D-pad direction to access it.
