[RELZ] Broadswords (beta)

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:32 am

A new category of swords designed to fall in place between the default shortswords and longswords.

Fuelled by a combination of my dislike for the oversized vanilla longsword meshes and nostalgia for the 'adventurer's weapon of choice' from the rpgs of
my childhood I bring you Broadswords.

These 'hack and slashers' are designed to remain wieldy in tight dungeon corridors and take prolonged punishment when far from the smith's anvil however they
lack some of the reach and finesse of the more battle-field orientated longsword. (i.e shorter and slower than a longsword but more durable and harder hitting).

All weapons are re-modelled based on standard meshes, they're all meant to fit in naturally alongside the vanilla items.

This mod adds both enchanted and mundane versions, including Shivering Isles enchanted and durable versions to the loot/npc/merchant levelled lists.

Please remember to rebuild your bashed patch to merge these changes. Please also remember you will have to wait for npcs to respawn (3 days default) before you start to encounter the new weapons.

Please report bugs/give feedback here as I don't check Tesnexus as often.

Hope you enjoy!

/edit: Forgot to mention, there's a test barrel containing all of the new weapons in the testinghall if you just want to check them out quickly. Type "coc testinghall" in the console to get there.

The iron version looks a little strange? Near the tip.

Is that intentional?

Brilliant :) The stupidly long swords have always irritated me. I'll be using this as soon as I can play again :)

No, it's light reflecting off the blade showing up a defect in the mesh. It looks ok without a nearby direct light source which is why I didn't notice it in game. I cast a light spell to brighten up the screenshots. I'll fix it up and upload a new version asap.

Thanks for pointing it out.

They look really great. :)
Now we only need a mod that adds them to NPCs and leveled lists... Fran's? OOO? Anyone? :) (edit: Just noticed that this mod already does that as well, but I was actually thinking about an implementation of the new weapons in the big overhaul mods - for example, OOO adds new weapons to the inventories of unique NPCs, replacing some of them with these weapons would be a good idea...)

New version uploaded 1.1b.

Changes

Fixed and replaced Iron Broadsword mesh. Should look better now under a broader range of lighting conditions. Please give feedback if there are still problems.

No upgrade patch just a complete replacer as the entire archived mod is only about 240k . Just unzip and over-write all files.

I'd have no problem at all with it being used, they'd need to be converted to MOBS/OMOBS values though. I don't use full FCOM myself as my computer is a bit of a clunker but I do use MOBS values from Frans. I went with vanilla stats in the mod however to keep it simple. I could create a seperate MOBS appropriate version if people prefer it.

These aren't really designed to be unique weapons, they will turn up randomly as an alternative to a longsword pretty much anywhere in the game. I'm working on another mod at the moment that will include some unique enchanted versions as rewards etc.

Thanks for your comments guys, I'm glad you are enjoying it.

I like this. I was always a fan of broadswords in games. I would download this if it were not for the few mods I found somewhat recently that added some other swords I liked (custom meshes and textures). Because, before I was simply using long/shortswords from the vanilla game mostly. Still a nice mod.
Would be cool if they were added to leveled lists like somebody said though

Thanks. They are added to the levelled lists though. Think I need a bigger font for that or something lol. /edit: op edited accordingly.

Hmm...
Mind if I add support for this to Item Interchange? That'll stick them into every appropriate list and inventory in everyone's game, not just the vanilla lists, like making them available for sale by the Tamriel Travellers, showing up in the equipment of OOO and MMM NPCs using custom equipment lists, and so forth.

That would be awesome, I use item interchange myself so I'm aware of what it adds to the game (literally and figuratively!). My only concern with that is that these are currently balanced for vanilla stats. Added into a MOBS balanced setup like FCOM or anything with OOO/Frans/MMM determining the game will mean the broadswords' stats don't make sense (i.e they'll be the same length as longswords in MOBs for example and actually do less damage etc). I'd probably be better doing a seperate MOBS version first. That said I'm not sure how that would affect Item interchange integration as I wouldn't be altering levelled lists just individual items. It would need to be an independent Broadswords_MOBS.esp though.

New version 1.2b uploaded to TESNEXUS.

Changelog

Added new MOBS compatible .esp. Now all weapons have stats more in line with those from MOBS balanced mods.

Make sure you only use one of the included .esp's!!

...snip...
Don't worry, it'll all work out, I am sure.
Good work on getting the alternative balancing esp done so fast. I'll try and get this into II asap, though the release date of the next version of II is rather vague right now. I'll also probably try out your mod in my own game (that's one of the best ways of getting rapid II support): thanks for the mod!

Sugaraqe, I have one request:
Could you also make a Fine Steel Broadsword? I haven't yet downloaded the file, so I don't know if there already is one, but your screenshots don't show any.

I'm asking because I've always wanted the Imperial Broadsword back that the Imperial Legion in Morrowind had. If you make one of them, I can give them to the guards (instead of the Silver Longsword they're usually carrying). :)
Ideally, it would have a smaller crossguard than the normal Steel Broadsword.

There's no fine steel or elven broadswords at the moment.

No elven because the elven longsword has a proper sized handle to begin with and isn't as oversized as the others. So an elven broadsword would have ended up being almost exactly the same size and proportions as the longsword, which I felt made it pointless. I did actually make a fine steel broadsword but I had problems getting the texture to look right and ended up leaving it out. I'll go back to it now and try again and I'll include it in a new version once finished. I agree it would make an excellent imperial broadsword substitution.

Don't worry, it'll all work out, I am sure.

You're welcome, I'm glad you like it. I'll add in the fine steel broadsword shortly as requested in a new version which will mean altering the levelled lists to include it. I don't know whether that affects you or not but you might want to wait for that version before starting.

I'd appreciate feedback on how people are finding the levelled list alterations I've made so far. Are the broadswords turning up o.k in your game as loot/equipped items/merchant inventory? are they appearing anywhere inappropriate? I've only found one so far but I haven't really had time to play much.

Thank you Vac.

And I've just finished adding II support into the development plugins. It's in the next II version, so you'll find the broadswords being carried by NPCs and creatures from all different mods if you use II as well. When the next version of II goes live. :whistling:

I haven't added support for the durable weapons as yet, but other than Corepc's Tamriel Travellers, there aren't many mods using the durable weapons in mods. I'll have a think about what I'm doing with those in the meantime.

As a side note, they look nice: solid but not clunky. Good job with them!

Thanks bud. I only included the durable versions for the sake of completeness so don't worry about them too much. They only appear in one default SI vendor LL so they are super rare in vanilla anyway. Glad you like the new models.

Thanks again,

You're very welcome. I didn't realise OMOBS was substantively different, I thought it was just MOBS but wider in scope to include all the extra FCOM stuff. If you would like an additional OMOBS balanced .esp let me know how the stats should be altered and I can include one.

MOBS is actually fine once again.

OMOBS stats are litltle weird sometime has reach, damage, durabilty, price, differ from mobs version depending on weapon once again..

I really do not see a need for OMOBS at this time. With MOBS Version being avialable once again..

only if people request it more than one person has well should you do a omobs version.. I will send you omobs stats adjustment on what to change (durablity, reach, damage, Speed)..

But something like this..

Broadsword would weigh more than normal sword (weight), speed would be slower (speed) weighs more, reach could be the same, durablity would be slighty higher thicker blade, and price would be higher than normal sword would be that would be a good guide for OMOBS...Just my thoughts based off the mobs version ..

Closet OMOBS Broadsword I can think of would be in fcom _realswords but that is high lvl..
