On broken Planet Elder Scrolls mods...

Post » Sun Jul 22, 2012 11:48 pm

It's rather embarrassing to say this, but Planet Elder Scrolls is really starting to get picky. Back about a year ago, all of Planet Elder Scrolls' mods were supposed to be moved over to its own server. But there are some mods that didn't make the transfer. So far, the main problem is the fact that Fileplanet is being archived. Some mods still work through Fileplanet, but other mods have been broken and no longer link properly. I'm not sure how many mods are broken, but I'm going to assume at least 50 or so, probably more. There's a definite fix, it's just a little complicated. The first step to fixing these mods is to compile a list of the broken mods. The second step is to track down copies of these mods and re-uploading them from the CMS. It will take time, but I believe it can all be fixed. So, could anyone help out with step one?

You know what I told you about this on GHF.

If you want help with this what better will it be if people actually reporting broken links on broken link tracker so to speak, because the way I see it you not only have information about the actual link but also what mod it has that link.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but there's a lot more than just One broken mod. All that's needed now is a link to the broken mod and its name. Nothing more.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. You see when people are downloading mods on PES they pick one, but the mod require another mod so people click on the link and they have a 404 error message on their screen. When people is having these error messages they simple don't report a broken link to the admins. Of course I'm not referring to anyone is just that people tend to ignore it and if they really want it they report a broken link to the author not to you which they should in the first place.

Leo, most of the broken mods are pre-2006. Really old, yet really good mods that are regularly downloaded, but are no longer supported or updated by their authors. If every single modder that ever lived constantly watched his or her mod, that might work, as it is, they don't. Now, we have a problem, and it requires fixing, aka, step one. This isn't going to fix itself.

I agree they won't get fix it by their self that's for sure. The only solution I can come up with right now is to (ab)use the Wayback Machine as much as possible just in case if any of those mods that have are broken now (dated back to 2006) can be salvaged.

Right Leo, that's step 2. Now, if we may continue..... finding the broken mods and making a list of them kind of needs to be done before that.

I think the best way to go from here is to makes it necessary to have a thread on PES, where people both modders and users can report broken links of mods with broken links more efficient than it's today. A report can have almost any relevant piece of information such as search links of listed mods and that's too bad that TES Search cannot search atm (damn we really needed it right now).

Leo, as of right now, a simple mod URL and the name of the broken mod will suffice. In this thread is fine. Nothing more is needed right now. Nothing more.

I agree. In the mean time the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1394318-mod-detective-xxiv/page__view__findpost__p__21257346 can use the http://wayback.archive.org/web/ to search for those mods that have an old FilePlanet link. :tes:
