No Brown People?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 5:05 pm

I find it strange that fully a third of the world's population wasn't represented in the game. In the end I ended up playing as an Asian after setting the skin really dark, since we are technically also from Asia. Does Fallout New Vegas or any of the DLC fix this?

What is it with this obsession over ethnicity? People gotta stop this. It's where racism comes from. Going around looking for specific ethnic groups is not healthy.

Also if you look at Fallout's history, they were at war with the chinese.

What are you talking about? I play as an Asian person almost exclusively. Look further at the game options. And brown as an adjective..... wth?

I'll check back when somebody actually gets my OP. Obviously these guys didn't, since one of them thinks war with the Chinese would prevent brown people from appearing in the game yet somehow allow Asians to appear, and the other one thinks the word "brown" shouldn't be used as an adjective.

You answered your own query, though.

I somehow doubt it. Unless Bethesda explicitly stated that they meant "Asian" to encompass people from all of Asia, I am going to assume they used "Asian" in the more popular sense of the word in the States, meaning East Asian. The fact that face models of Asians come with epicanthic folds supports my theory as well.

But something has to be the default. You can customize basically everything about the character's facial features, otherwise. I still don't understand what the problem is.

The game starts with four very broad racial pre-sets. You can then use the sliders to customise them to your own preference. The game designers are not going to waste file space including arbitrary headings for every nationality on earth. That would be like me requesting western and eastern European pre-settings, right? Instead I'd just pick Caucasian and tinker with the skin shade until it was where I wanted.

If you're addressing the fact that you want model differences between east and west Asia, sorry, but it does seem like you're making a mountain out of a mole-hill. If it's the facial model you're concerned with, try one of the other three racial types, and see if you can get the skin tone right. If I've totally misunderstood your posts, you have my apologies.

Damn. Skirt' beat me to it. :P

Ok... maybe I didn't play around with the sliders enough. i seem to remember thinking the sliders weren't as detailed as the oblivion ones. I must have missed a few.

"I still have no idea what this man is talking about. Brown ? I am not sure where you get asian and brown skin mixed up with."

i.e. Indian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, etc.

"The game starts with four very broad racial pre-sets. You can then use the sliders to customise them to your own preference. Not really, since there is no visible phenotypic difference between east and west europeans, whereas there's a distinct difference between South Asians and East Asians. And I don't think it's asking too much for fully one third the world's population to have a separate section, especially if Hispanics whose lines of definition are far more blurred and whose population is significantly smaller are getting one. I don't think that adding one more category would have strained their manpower or our computers too much.

I'll play as an Asian, but every time someone ingame refers to me as Asian, i can't help thinking of the popular usage of Asian in North America, meaning exclusively East Asian.

There is nothing wrong with referring to Caucasians as white, is there? Then there's nothing wrong with using the word "brown." I am brown, and proud.

So, nothings wrong with just blurting out "why arn't there black people?" right?

It may not intend to be offensive, but it sounds really messed up and what you meant in lost.

Only if you are looking to get offended. I am not about to start referring to all Brown people as Indians. That is just as offensive to Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and Sri Lankans.

So you are saying us white folks all look the same? Racist much?

Try comparing people from Italy with people from Iceland, or folks from Ireland with folks from Moscow...

It's really simple:

The four "race templates" are chosen like this because they correspond to the four most common "races" as used in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_ethnicity_in_the_United_States_Census#Census_2000_.28Population.29. And yes, it groups the people from the Indian subcontinent into the "Asian" race even though a lot of them are closer to Europeans, genetically and culturally speaking.

Do you want to have more variation - maybe add Arab as a separate "race", or Inuit, Polynesian, or some other? Mod it in. :)

Im still trying to figure out the whole brown thing. Around here brown is ment to describe hispanics. I cant say that I have heard of arabs or middle easterns refered to as brown people.

In any case, does it really matter though? How often do you see your own face in the game to be upset. I would have to say not alot unless you play in 3rd person.

On the white issue, some people could be offended by it just like some could be offended by being refered to as brown. What being done in this case is more racist than anything. If you are refering to a nationality of people by their skin color that is racist. If you refer to them by their nationality that is not.

Example would be calling asians and people of asian descent yellow people instead of just simply saying asians. So just a bit of FYI, just because you might not take offense to something doesnt mean others wont.

Too much racism being injected in this topic. For goodness sake it is a game, it's not real life.

What is real life is that calling other members "trolls" is classed as flaming and can earn warnings and time away from the forum.
