BTB's Game Improvements & The Topic Of Doom

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 1:00 pm

Oh, yeah, I think I meandered off of the original topic of magicka restoration.

I do my best in the mod to try and make it easier to come by. I lowered the effect cost so that potions restore more of it, I made the spoiled potions restore magicka, and if you've got Mysticism as a skill, there's always the absorb magicka spells (which, admittedly, I'll be nerfing a bit in the next update). The only other thing I can think of it perhaps adding a restocking supply of cheap/bargain restore magicka potions to certain vendors. But, I'm not too sure about that one.

I think magicka regen can make the game more fun but it depends on how you play and your experience with the game. Playing without it even as a pure mage can also be fun because it means you have to be craftier rather than just spamming magic. Not to imply that spamming magic isn't great fun.

Agreed, but why isn't that ever turned around to: it means you have to be craftier than just spamming sword strokes? Not from your post, but I get the impression sometimes that there's this idea that magic is kind of a cheat, and that the way to "fix" that is to force melee combat on mages. To me that seems equivalent to dropping the health on all weapons so that they're useless after 10 strikes, until they're repaired.

Of course, for most characters (anybody who isn't a pure mage), magic IS kind of a cheat, which makes the balancing difficult.

I was highly disappointed that I couldn't find a restocking supply of standard restore magicka potions. Those would have been a better investment than some of the spells I bought but never use when I was at a lower level.

By this point in time though, the the exclusive restore magicka potions are more suitable, are affordable, and there is a restocking supply of that available. It's quite a change going from being desperate for money at lower levels, and having to sell soul gems filled with conjured ghosts to make money, to having money practically shooting out of my ears.

So if you added restocking supplies for those, an alternative to alchemy would be buying soul gems, filling them, selling them, then using the money to buy the potions.

On the subject of spamming sword strokes, when I finally decided to buy the bound dagger spell, my thoughts were basically like "oh god why didn't I do this before, this is awesome" and "it's like mowing the lawn."

Hmm... well, perhaps I may end up doing that, then.

Might I ask how you ended up getting rich? I've gotten mixed feedback on this one. Some players remain hard up for cash throughout the game, and some don't. I imagine the biggest money-sink would be paid training, so I assume you don't do it much.

No, I don't do training often actually, I suppose I should. I'm rather conservative when it comes to money now that I have so much, which seems extremely counterproductive now that I think about it.

I got rich by simply selling a bunch of loot then never spending it. I have a bunch of glass armor, daedric pieces, a bunch of ebony swords and enchanted glass blades worth thousands that I haven't sold because I have plenty of money anyways. They decorate the shelves in my stronghold. I mostly kept them because I didn't feel like going all the way to Zainab camp to sell them to the guy with enough money to actually buy them. For stuff that is worth about 2,000 or less, I sell them to that armorer outside the Mages Guild in Balmora.

I suppose it would be worth it to sink about 50k into more training.

On a similar note, I reached 100k gold the other day, and decided to sink some into 5-6 conjuration levels from some trainer in Valenvaryon. When I returned home, I had more money then I started with after selling the orcish armor from the NPC I killed to get there.

Edit: In my opinion, if you're hard up for cash by that time you're spending too much of it on training or something.

Hmm... interesting.

And just so we're clear, you are using the "Settings" plug, right?

Yes, but the alternate one that doesn't gimp misc skill progression.

And for reference, I'm level 26 at the moment.

Edit: Why do you want to know?

That explains a lot, then. Training is only a truly effective money-sink when the lack of natural misc skill growth forces it to be one, I think.

I've never really concerned myself with misc skill growth. Though, that is excluding Long Blade, which I only trained for the strength attribute modifier (before I got a leveling mod), and Mercantile so people would take less of my money. Other than that, I don't concern myself with the misc skills.

Edit: Though of course I grew those skills with training rather than trying to use them.

Edit 2: Even if they didn't grow without training, I doubt I would have put that much more money into them than I have already.

Well, the basic idea is that every skill in the game, major or minor, is one that you're going to have to use at some point (take our Alchemy example from earlier). And even if you aren't paying to train it up to use it, there's still the multiplier incentive. Between those two things and the fact that there's not much *else* to spend your money on, I figure that there's no reason not to spend your hard-earned coin on training.

I see your point. I suppose I'll start doing more training to make that money useful. In the case of alchemy I don't see the need for it at this point. Having magicka regeneration take care of my use of minor spells for non-combat stuff is quite useful. Though it seems like increasing my Block skill would be worthwhile.

And I don't necessarily agree with only allowing misc skills to level up with training. In light of this discussion it seems like you just want another money sink in that case.

Anyhow, I have to go to sleep now unless I want to screw up my sleep schedule... again...

It's one of my reasons. It's not my only reason, but it's a big one.

I have to stay up all night. Graveyard shift at work and all.

And it rotates, so I go back and forth between days and overnights. I'm all kinds of sued to having a messed up sleep schedule.

BTB, from someone who's using the original settings plug-in, money is hard to come by.

I take that back, actually. It's nigh on impossible to earn enough money to pay for more than a couple multipliers' worth of training by the time you level. The problem in my case is that skill-ups come too quickly. My block, medium armor, and long blade are all 45+, and I can easily get a few skillups per each one of those just walking along the road from Ald'ruhn to Gnisis. A trip of that distance equals about 7/10 of a level, and that's if I completely avoid dungeons altogether. I'll only earn about 400-500g per level though, leaving me just enough to repair and squeeze in one or two bouts with a trainer.

The best solution for me right now seems to be to go into the CS and nerf the hell out of the rate of skill-increases, at least as far as combat skills are concerned.

Well, that *is* why I lowered the growth rate of major/minor skills and weapons/armor...

EDIT: on another note, I *just* made one change that I swear I should have made ages ago and made Hearth Heal a lower-magnitude, lower-cost spell.
