Budget skyrim rig project

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:35 am

hey guys and ladies i just purchased a dell inspirion 560 stock specs:

?Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5700 processor
3.0GHz, 800MHz Front Side Bus, 2MB L2 Cache

?4GB DDR3 SDRAM system memory

?500GB SATA hard drive

?16X Multi-format DVD Burner

now I'm doing this as a budget rig i already spent 100 dollars on the upgraded graphics card xfx ati radeon 5750(edit:not 5770) 1gb ddr5 (for now) until i get the next amout of money to buy a new power supply please reccomend any further upgrades i should do thanks guys and ladies

Took a look at the overall specs and it looks like you're good. After the power supply, I'd say get a decent set of headphones (with a mic) to go along with the setup.

i will do that thanks but what would be the best cheapest psu to buy that would fit my inspiron 560

Your Inspiron 560, provided that it is not the 560s slimline model, takes pretty much any standard ATX PSU. These are excellent on the cheap:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371035&cm_re=antec_power_supply-_-17-371-035-_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139018&cm_re=corsair_power_supply-_-17-139-018-_-Product

As for other upgrades, if you want you can also upgrade the processor. From what I can find so far, the motherboard in this system can take majority of the LGA 775 socket Core 2 Duos. The best quad I could find so far in a Inspiron 560 is the Core 2 Quad Q8400.

That's pretty bad bro, IMO. Take a trip to NewEgg (.com) and get yourself some new stuff. At least a 1,000 watt PSU as well a Intel i7 and a GTX 580. Make sure yo get some good coolers.

Perhaps you missed the "Budget" part.....And 1000W is just useless overkill even for a system of that caliber. A 650W Corsair could power that.

what about the nvidia gt240 would that be good

A step down from the Radeon 5750 and based on older technology. Don't bother.

I really don't know anything about building a computer, my dad's the IT guy and I'm trying to learn. But unless you needed it for school or your old one died, I can't imagine why you would buy a rig for Skyrim now. Wait 10 months and the rig you just bought will be cheaper, or you could find a better one for the same price.

Although, as people have said, picking and choosing individual parts off newegg is the cheapest route.

Well, don't buy an intel sandy bridge processor yet, mass recall. Luckily my order was still in processing so was able to cancel mine. D:

I suggest you work a lot of overtime in the summer if you want to have the best rig for this game. TES is known to be a big rig killer :brokencomputer: , infact you might want to NOT purchase this game untill a year or so later that way things are cheaper and you'll know what will be a worthy system, Ofcourse being without skyrim for a week let alone 1+ years would cause any normal person near instant insanity. :obliviongate:

And PCs have many games that don't come out on consoles. Exclusivity isn't exclusive.

Never seen a game that i had to have that didn't come out on a console. What is there? WoW or Starcraft?

I don't see the logic in buyer a computer for a game that is months away from release (unless of course you needed it right away), you would be better off saving the money up until a few months from release when the specs are known and purchasing the computer then. The wait will also mean that some parts would be cheaper.

Well, there's just about every indie game under the sun, due to the PC being orders of magnitude easier to get into. MMOs and RTS' like WoW and Starcraft (Indeed, their entire genres, though WoW is pretty much the MMORPG genre in itself)
There's more niche titles, like the X series of excellent space simulation games, brilliant games by smaller developers like STALKER. Other than the previously mentioned RTS or MMO genres, there's no one genre that the PC gets more things in, it's just a general thing. You don't have to be a big developer to make a big game for the PC, so there's always something new. As to why you don't have to have them? Simple, because it's often developers making games with fewer resources, who don't have an advertising budget, you probably don't even know most of them exist.

It's amazing what incredible titles MS and Sony lock out by requiring large sums of money for everyone developing on their console, eh.

Why would one buy such a hilariously underpowered machine, never mind buy it for so much above its actual value? If people want to sacrifice momentary ease of use for freedom, utility and savings, why not?

I cant understand PC gamers, why spend thousands of dollars/pounds on a pc which will be outdated in a year. You probably prefer pc aming but why not just buy a console, you wont have to spend money upgrading it, they have better graphics etc.

You are 100% wrong. First of all, decent PC doesn't cost "thousands of dollars" (that's overkill). Second, you can play for years and it doesn't become outdated (after two years I play every game on max settings and my ATI is mid-range at the moment). And third, even after 4-5 years, on "medium settings" it'll look better than on any console. This is not "flaming" or whatever, these are facts. On the other side, consoles are less expensive. So, it's just a matter of taste.

Go to Newegg and get a power supply. Honestly, I'd buy that before just about anything else. You then have some options, one, which other folks have pointed out, is adding a second card and crossfiring them. The other thing is a monitor. Watch Newegg closely and when it gets closer to November, start looking at specials on monitors. When I built this pc two xmas's ago, I got $800 off a 32 in screen that is beautfiul. I've always wished I could play mods on my 63 in samsung tv. Since I can't play mods on the xbox, I'll only play on the pc. Now, with the big monitor, I don't mind not playing on the tv.

Also, in the future, instead of going to Dell and wasting your hard earned money....look into building your own pc. If you have a somewhat technical mind, a day to spend and about half the money that Dell would charge you....you could build your own for a fraction of the cost. There are numerous manuals out there, on Toms and other places that walk you thru the process. Then go to Newegg, order your components and put it together. If you are comfortable ordering a video card and upgrading your current pc, you really aren't that far off from just builing your own. This pc cost about $1700 to build, but it was about $4k from Alienware(Dell), Digital storm, falcon etc...and I was able to get the exact parts I wanted.

Just a suggestion. Good Luck!

Skyrim surely won't need THAT much...

But I admit that's pretty low for a new computer. That's why I'm no fan of pre-made PCs...they always fail, in one way or another (unless you pick the pieces yourself, aka Alienware).

It's premature if you're getting it for Skyrim but it's too late I suppose.

My pie in the sky dream is to wait for AMD's Bulldozer and if its price isn't sky high compare it with what Intel has. Maybe new mid range cards will be out by then too. That's if I have funds for a new computer before Skyrim, which I doubt.

Upgrading a Dell is always a pain. Please make sure that everything fits before you buy.
Although the 5750 isn't very power-hungry, you might want to get a new PSU as others have suggested. I think 500+ watt should be enough, though.
If you still have some money after that, the CPU might become a bottleneck. I'd suggest a Core 2 Quad for your 775 socket - but if you go that route, you might just as well have build a rig on your own.

Personal question:
I have a core i3 (1156!), a great 500w PSU and need to upgrade my GPU before Skyrim - should I get an overclocked 460 or a 560 Ti?
I don't want to replace the PSU, so more than that is not really an option. I fear when I pick the 560 the CPU might become a weak spot, but I might decide to upgrade the CPU sometime next year (and I would want to kick my own ass then if I limited myself with a 460).
Suggestions?

Upgrading Dells is a royal PITA. I had a Dimension 9100 and upgrading that was a huge pain. Because that was BTX form factor with a proprietary design for the case layout and MOBO the MOBO could not be upgraded. Also, the PSU dimensions and screwhole locations are "odd." I was able to find only one PSU for it that fit, after quite a few purchases and returns, and it was PC Power and Cooling. Link: http://www.pcpower.com/products/power_supplies/dell/

Hopefully yours is easier to upgrade. Just be careful about PSU purchases because chances are finding one that fits could be difficult. And goodluck trying to get a straight answer out of Dell regarding buying a bigger one directly from them.
