It's impossible to tell whether your disc is damaged or what sort of damage has been caused unless you play it.
Most retailers offer disc repair services at very low rates. If you notice any problems when playing the game, just take it to a store that offers the service and they'll likely fix it up for you. Personally speaking, I've had some pretty damaged discs come back good as new, so there's plenty of hope for you yet - and it's much cheaper than having to buy a new game.
Since you say it seems to be working fine, there's absolutely no reason to think that your savegames are in any way affected by this process.
