Buffy the Bowgirl III

Welcome to Buffy's third thread!

As we begin this thread, Buffy is about two thirds through her first book

Her http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1033100 thread covers Chapters 1 - 25.

Her http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1045763 thread covers Chapters 26 - 43.

{I note that as we end this third thread, it contains Chapters 44 - 59.}

Buffy is a Bosmer/Breton mystic archer who hails from Bravil. A graduate of the Arcane University, she has traveled throughout Cyrodiil. When she encountered an Oblivion Gate in Kvatch, she was struck by the selfless heroism of its defenders. Although lacking the skills and confidence to close the gate or assist at the time, she decided to try and somehow help. In order to accomplish this, she has studied Daedra Lords extensively and completed several of their shrine quests hoping to learn more about what is inside that gate at Kvatch. As we join her, she is seeking two things. Firstly, to improve her own ability to fight the terrifying daedra. Secondly, to recruit assistance for the efforts in Kvatch.

Cyrodiil is a beautiful, but dangerous place, requiring many choices. Many of the decisions Buffy makes are based upon a simple concept she has forged to help her survive:
The Buffy Doctrine: If you are kind to me, I will love you dearly; If you are mean to me or my friends, I will likely kill you.

With almost 65,000 words of story behind us, I understand that new readers may not have the time or inclination to read back through her previous 43 chapters. No matter, I heartily welcome you. If I can answer any questions from her past that would help you appreciate her story, please do not hesitate to PM me. If you would like a concise summary of who Buffy is, I recommend reading the introductory post in her second thread.

For those precious readers who have graced Buffy and I with their support, words fail to adequately express my appreciation for the wonderful encouragement.

44 Leyawiin Expedition - Her Cold Loving Embrace

"Would you walk with me Milady?" Captain Caelia Draconis motioned towards the front exit of the castle. "This 'naked nobles' caper has occupied much of my time today and I'm anxious to get out of the castle and make my rounds. I have a city to protect."

I walked beside her. "Can we drop the milady stuff? I'm a little uncomfortable with it. To be honest, I only became a knight to help my friend Mazoga."

"Very well, Buffy." Tapping herself on the chest, the Imperial then added, "Caelia." She smiled as we walked. "Yes, you are new to this. Although these nobles would never notice, you clearly are not used to moving in that mithril armor."

"You're right, Caelia. This metal armor is just for show. Usually I wear clothes or leather. Um, I don't mean to presume as to who you might choose to send to Kvatch -"

Caelia held up her hand to interrupt. "Then don't. The guard I'm assigning to this is Sergeant Lucilious Marcus. He's a twelve year veteran of the Legion and native of Kvatch. Fine man."

I suppressed a squeal of approval. Lucilious was a friend. He had assisted me in knighting Mazoga and I knew his passion for Kvatch. I simply stated, "I'm sure he will be an excellent choice Caelia." The castle doors were opened for us and we stepped outside. We both lit torches against the night.

Caelia seemed to relax now that we were outdoors. "Buffy, I didn't mean to sound curt, but Lucilious has been asking for orders to Kvatch ever since that gate appeared."

"I really appreciate the help for Kvatch. Caelia," I continued, "Do you know of any way to get more soldiers assigned there?" I added hopefully, "would it do any good if I petitioned the Elder Council directly?"

The guard captain cocked her head and looked at me. "Are you from a rich, powerful family?" Without waiting for a response, she added, "Are you sleeping with a member of the Council?"

"No Caelia, I just thought-"

"No." She shook her head sadly. "It is unlikely the Council would see you. Even if you somehow managed to get an audience with them, they would likely view your request as meddling." Caelia's face softened as she continued, "Tell you what. I will send a letter to each of the city guard commanders touting Count Leyawiin's example. Who knows? Some of the other cities may send a soldier or two." She then looked up at the stars, putting the subject to rest. "It's nice to be out of that castle in the fresh air." "Beautiful night. Reminds me of my home, Applewatch Farm. Are you a country girl like me?"

"I love the forests Caelia." Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a Bosmer woman and an Argonian man talking in front of the castle. The woman looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place her. "Oh, I'm from Bravil." I smiled, "I'm not sure if that qualifies as city or not, but I like it. I have no brothers or sisters, and my parents died by the time I was twelve. The people of Bravil became my family."

"I'm sorry about your loss, Buffy. My mother Perennia, keeps the Draconis clan in touch, even though we're spread out. My siblings, Matthias, Andreas and Sibylla are scattered all over Cyrodiil. Mother is always making lists and trying to send gifts to us."

"I envy you Caelia." Why couldn't I place that Bosmer?

"Well, I'd best get to my rounds. I'll cut a set of orders for Lucilious and have him report to you at the White Stallion Lodge on his way to Kvatch. Good luck Buffy."

The Imperial guard walked away. I saw the Bosmer woman take notice, tracking Caelia with her eyes. As a few coins were dropped into the Argonian's hand, it became clear. The begger was simply a rented prop to support the Wood Elf's surveillance. No longer required, he pocketed the coins and scurried off. The Bosmer was Telaendril, my Dark Brotherhood sister in plain clothes. I quickly closed the distance. As Taelendril saw me approaching she started to turn away, but stopped. Recognition flashed in her eyes.

"Buffy? Why it is you!" Telaendril hugged me and poured silky words into my ear, "Dear sister, seeing you is like a gift from the Night Mother herself." As we broke away from our warm embrace, she stared at my mithril armor.

http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Acadian6/Buffy%20I/ScreenShot147.jpg

"Telaendril, it's wonderful to see you again. I? I'm glad you're not mad at me for leaving the Sanctuary."

"Why would we be, dear sister?" Telaendril smiled reassuringly and continued in a soothing tone that was like velvet, "you have done nothing wrong, violated no tenants. Your family is patient and loves you. We know when the time is right you will ask for a contract. Our secrets are safe within your heart."

The Dark Brotherhood had shown me nothing but kindness. I was pleased to see that had not changed. "I hope my dark brothers and sisters are well?"

"Things have been somewhat? turbulent since you left." Telaendril continued with a smile, "our newest member, a Khajiit, has been most amusing. I've never seen an assassin require so much training. Vincente spent so much time trying to teach her, that Antoinetta became jealous - quite unbecoming. At any rate, the Khajiit has disappeared and we fear she may have defaulted on a contract! You know what that means?. Vincente has spared no resources trying to track her down." Still staring at my armor, she continued, "Look at you! What in the name of Sithis have you been up to?"

"Quite a bit of travelling since I left the Sanctuary. More recently, just some work for the castle here in Leyawiin." A thought hit me. "You know Telaendril, you look like you're on the job, as it were. Tell me, has someone's prayers to the Night Mother about the Countess of Leyawiin brought you here?" I smiled, perhaps hopefully.

"You're right that I am on a contract, but not to kill Lady Leyawiin." She grinned. "Much better. I'm in the process of eliminating an entire family! A mother and all four of her children."

"Telaendril! What did they do?"

She starred at me. "Who knows? Speaking of contracts, I must be off. Oh Buffy, it was so wonderful to see you. May the Night Mother wrap you in her cold, loving embrace."

"Um, Telaendril? if I could offer you some advice about surveillance and blending in?"

The assassin raised one eyebrow questioningly.

"Lose the bow," I whispered with a slight smile.

Telaendril glanced back over her left shoulder at the towering longbow and grinned sheepishly. I watched as she faded into the shadows.

I realized my dark family was cuddly, like a nest of asps. They loved me however, and I only knew one response to that - I loved them in return. Had these contracts been righteous debts of honor, perhaps?. but no. Killing a family for 'Who knows?' I shook my head. I couldn't help wondering though, if I was any better. I certainly was no stranger to killing. I couldn't even say I disliked it. Yet as surely as I knew I loved my dark brothers and sisters, I also knew I was no assassin.

Telaendril had mentioned that vampire at the Sanctuary. Was my unwavering revulsion towards those beasts really so different than Allesia Caro's hatred of what she called the beast races? I knew she was misguided. Was I? Was it possible there were vampires that were not simply targets? Don't be silly Buffy; You know you'd slay a Bosmer vampire as quickly as an Imperial one.

I headed for the guild and some goodbyes. Superian and I would then go to the 'Black Mare' Lodge for my last night in Leyawiin. I hoped Mazoga would understand the need for her to stay in Leyawiin.

Another good installment! I like how Buffy keeps her cool even when talking to the Captain of the Guard who is investigating her own shenanigans! It was also interesting to see a member of the Dark Brotherhood again, and the feelings that dredged up within Buffy. Likewise the news about their newest member! :P

Her self-reflection about vampires and her hatred for them was also a good touch, especially her comparison of herself to the Countess. It shows a depth of thought that many people never achieve.

Been away for a while I didn't notice you made a new thread so I had been waiting for another email notification so I decided to check the thread. And that led me here. I like how Buffy sort of... feels strange around the DB. I think she may eventually give up on it or something.

Here's to thread #3! :icecream:

It's interesting to reflect on how different Buffy's interaction with Caelia would have been had she stayed in the sanctuary.

I have finally read all 44 chapters and am caught up. Whew! So anyways, everything is fresh in my head. Your writing has improved as Buffy has grown over time.

Buffy does seem to have a little problem with puddles, doesn't she?

I like how you balance the good and evil parts of Buffy. I remember when she tortured some necromancer in a cave somewhere, but she has done plenty of good stuff too.

I noticed how she developed her doctrine over time, so it made perfect sense and just screamed 'Buffy' when she said: 'I realized my dark family was cuddly, like a nest of asps. They loved me however, and I only knew one response to that - I loved them in return.'

@Digz- Thank you for staying with us, and your warm encouragement for so very many stories. ^_^

@Zalphon- A hearty welcome to you! I'm delighted you have joined us and thank you for the kind words.

@SubRosa- Thank you for picking up on some of the moving parts here. Yes, that pesky Dark Brotherhood. It is somewhat rare in game to catch Telaendril out and about when not looking for her and I couldn't resist exploiting the random encounter. I see you caught the significance of the DB's newest member. Vampires- with a name like Buffy, she can't help thinking about them sometimes. ;)

@Foxy- We shall try our best to keep you well-feasted at Buffy's Tavern! As always, thank you so much for stopping in for an ale.

@mALX- Thanks! Heh, I'm not sure anyone can straighten out the Count of Bravil, short of the DB. Buffy has never mentioned what she went through to buy her house, but anyone who has bought the Bravil house knows that humiliation well. As Buffy's third thread begins, let me once again thank you for the inspiration you have provided me since we first dragged each other over to fanfic. You are an amazing writer and friend.

@Wolf- If I have a hope, it is that readers would view Buffy's stories as the welcoming inn or tavern that you describe! Thank you so much for always stopping in for an ale! :foodndrink:

@mcbeanie- Buffy does indeed feel strange around the DB. She knows she doesn't fit in with them, but they love her anyway and have always treated her kindly. The only way she knows how to respond to that is by loving them back - it's just the way she's made. It seems the DB recognizes that and perhaps even believes Buffy will come around to their ways - I suspect they are mistaken.

@DestriMelarg- Thank you! Buffy could barely justify killing Rufio, but certainly would have had big problems with any subsequent contracts. She does not realize that Telaendril's current contract includes Caelia as a target. If she knew, I suspect Buffy would intervene on Caelia's behalf, with very messy consequences.

@Koala- Welcome and thank you for catching up! I appreciate the kind words and for noting that many of Buffy's decisions can be explained by her doctrine. Puddles, yes. :o

45 Leyawiin Expedition - Farewell

I intercepted the blow of the iron blade with my Leyawiin shield, but the painful impact jarred me to the core and propelled me to the ground.

"No Buff!" Mazoga lowered the sword and shook her head as she stood over me outside the White Stallion Lodge. "If you stiff arm that shield and try to just absorb a hit, you'll get your arm broken. You need to sweep or deflect incoming blows with your shield. Here." The Orc reached out a massive hand and pulled me to my feet. "Try again." She stepped back and slowly commenced another horizontal slash.

This time, I angled the shield somewhat and was able to deflect the blow up and away. I immediately followed with a weak charm spell into Mazoga's chest as I backed up. "How's that Zoga?"

"Much better! You'll never be a close combat fighter, but you might be able to survive a hit or two and buy yourself a few seconds to cast a spell."

I quipped, "I think you're just beating me up because we're sending Lucilious instead of you to Kvatch." Smiling to mask my inner turmoil, I added, "are you upset with me about that?"

"Nah," replied Mazoga shaking her head seriously. "I'm glad the Count recognizes that it would take several of his guards to keep down those Black Bow Bandits if he let me go to Kvatch. I'll miss you though. I'm glad you told those friends of yours that ride for the Black Horse Courier to stop by the lodge on their rounds and tell me the news of Kvatch. If they report you need my help, I'll be there. Besides, that Lucilious fellow looks like he can handle a sword pretty well. I'd drag him home with me some night if you weren't sending him to Kvatch!"

Giggling at the image and relieved by my friend's words, I chirped back, "Yes, yes I know, at the point of your sword! Have you hurt me enough for the day 'Zoga?" I rubbed my sore rear end that had been bounced to the ground several times. My shield arm was also aching.

"I think so Buff." Mazoga set the iron 'training' blade down on the porch and grabbed her enchanted glass sword and scabbard. "Just remember about your bow. I've busted the bows of plenty of archers who tried to block with them. It's better than nothing, but if that thing takes a hard direct hit, it'll break. Even you may not be able to repair a badly cracked bow stave. If you have time, try to pull out your shield." She finished strapping on her sword belt. "Speaking of archers, that reminds me. I'm gonna go get me some black bows. Tag along if you like."

Noting the sun getting low in the sky, I shook my head. "I need to pack and get ready to ride north early tomorrow. Be careful 'Zoga." I watched my friend as she headed out to patrol for bandits. After she was out of sight, I turned to enter the 'Black Mare' Lodge, as Mazoga and I called it.

* * *

Seated at the wooden table inside the lodge, I reviewed the letter I had quilled.

Savlian,
I hope this finds you and your forces well. My friends who ride the black horses for the newspaper tell me what news they can of Kvatch when I see them. They will also carry letters to me should your duties permit you the time to write. My trip to Leyawiin was longer than I anticipated, but it did yield some assistance. I'm sure you will find Lucilious of great help. I know that, like you, his heart is in Kvatch. Captain Caelia Draconis of Leyawiin has written letters to all her counterparts in the various cities asking for more assistance. She advised me against petitioning the Council directly for aid. I'm sure she is right, and I know you have already written several requests to them yourself. I'm working on some more ideas that might produce help your efforts. I miss you and have not forgotten my promise to return.
Fondly, Buffy

I wanted to say so much, yet the words said so little. I folded the parchment, then poured wax from a burning candle to seal it. Gathering the score of crumpled drafts strewn about the floor into a large stone bowl, I set them ablaze. As the flames diminished, the glowing, dancing embers reminded me of the burning city of Kvatch, that horrid gate and my brief glimpse of the Deadlands. Scamps and atronachs spewing fire. And even worse - clannfears.

"Acadian, I need your help. How many shrines to Daedric Lords have we visited? I know little more of fighting daedra than when we started. Am I wasting my time?"

My map was on the table and I saw it rustle slightly. I placed my hand down on the map and sighed, "why can't you talk to me? You are a part of me, yet it is so hard to communicate with you. You can hear my words and see my actions. All I usually get from you is cryptic images or thoughts - and only then when you choose to share them with me. I guess you can't speak words but I know you can project words into my mind when you want. You've done so before. Can we learn to have a conversation? Here, let's try. One, two, three. Now your turn." I waited hopefully.

Four, five, this is pointless, came the telepathic reply from Acadian.

"No!" I said excitedly. "It's not pointless, it's wonderful. We're communicating! Well sort of. At least it's a start. Acadian, I want more from you than just an occasional image or thought." I picked up the map. "Now when I open this, I'm pretty sure I'm going to see a blue mark. Is that going to help me learn how to kill daedra?"

It will allow you to fight daedra where they live, yes. Who kills who depends on you.

With a mixture of giddiness and fear, I responded, "well, I guess that's fair enough." I opened the map and studied it. "Ok, tomorrow we'll start north along the Green Road, then cross the Niben and continue east along the banks of the Silverfish River towards that blue mark." I thought for a moment and added, "You know I'd go wherever you put a mark on my map, right?"

And I will come with you Buffy, whether you follow those marks or not.

I smiled. "Thank you my paladin. I-"

The door to the lodge swung open to reveal a smiling Mazoga. "Buff, you should have tagged along. I found a new cave just full of Black Bow Bandits. Well, not exactly full anymore." She chuckled and held up several black bows. "The Count has been real nice about giving me a bounty for these. In fact even after paying for recharging my sword, repair hammers, healing potions and supplies, we're getting rich! Not to mention how much gold I can make by selling some of the loot those bandits carry."

"Good for you, 'Zoga." I smiled and watched my friend as she downed an ale and began to repair her equipment. She looked happy, and I felt a little better with the decision to leave her in Leyawiin.

As if to read my mind, Mazoga continued between hammer taps, "Yep, this is about the best gig I've ever had. A never ending supply of bandits, just waiting for a head bashing from a real knight. And getting paid for it to boot!" She then paused her repairs and looked at me. "Besides, I talked to Lucilious. He has friends in Kvatch. I know about friends. Going there means a lot to him."

I got up and walked over to her. "It surely does, 'Zoga," I said, placing my hand gently on her broad shoulder.

* * *

A heavy Black Marsh mist hung over the Lower Niben and spread its gray tendrils far beyond the banks of the river. Although unseen, I knew the sun was up and hoped it would soon burn through the morning fog. I was almost done loading Superian for our departure from the 'Black Mare' Lodge. Mazoga and I had agreed that a short goodbye was best. I had made no attempt to hide my tears as we hugged earlier that morning. Then, she was off to town to collect the bounty for her most recently captured black bows.

Through the gray dimness, I could see the light of a torch slowly approaching along the road from Leyawiin. The unmistakable form of an Imperial Legion rider emerged. As the bay horse was reined in to a stop next to Superian, I heard a familiar voice. "Hail Milady, are you ready to go?"

"Lucilious! I? I didn't recognize you. I should have known you would not travel as a Leyawiin guard."

"All guards are Legionnaires on loan to the local county lords. As soon as I got those orders to Kvatch, I dug up my ol' Legion armor and requisitioned a horse."

I mounted Superian and we set off together, north along the Green Road.

"Dame Buffy, we should make Bravil by night fall."

"I'm afraid we'll part ways before then Lucilious. I'll be crossing the Niben and heading east soon."

Lucilious looked at me questioningly. "But, I thought I was to accompany you to Kvatch?"

"Indeed, you will see me there, but not yet. I have much to do before I can join you." I smiled gently. "Your orders from Captain Draconis, if I'm not mistaken, are to report to Kvatch, not escort a Wood Elf." I produced a letter from my pack and held it out to Lucilious. "Since you will arrive well before me, I ask that you deliver this to Captain Savlian Matius."

Lucilious silently took the letter. We continued north as the first hints of sunshine caused the fog to retreat towards the river. Before long, the mist was completely burned away, leaving a beautiful bright morning in its stead.

Shielding my eyes against the sun, I looked east and could see the Niben starting to widen. "I must leave you now. Will you remove your helmet for a moment?" We both reined in our horses to a stop and Lucilious did as I requested. I sidled Superian closer and kissed the Legionnaire on the cheek. "Safe journey."

"Thank you Milady. And to you." Lucilious pulled his helmet on and slowly continued north towards Bravil.

I watched until he was out of sight. When and how had I gained such power? I realized how Savlian must feel being in a position of deciding who lives and dies. It was a responsibility I didn't want. I knew if I had asked, Mazoga would have ignored the Count and come with me. I asked her to stay in Leyawiin though, and she would probably live. I knew the dangers, yet here I was sending Lucilious to Kvatch, and very possibly to his death. What made it worse was that I wasn't even brave enough to go back there myself? yet.

Excellent chapter. With quite a bit going on. We see more of Buffy's self-preparation for Kvatch in her shield training with Mazoga. A mostly business-like letter to Savlian, yet one written rather fondly. A teary good-bye that shows the depth of the bond that has grown between Mazoga and Buffy (and to think we all wanted to strangle that orc when we first saw her...). We see Buffy coming to grips with her new-found status, and the terrible power and responsibility it confers upon her.

This is one quote that really caught me:

I know about friends. Going there means a lot to him."

I got up and walked over to her. "It surely does, Zoga," I said, placing my hand gently on her broad shoulder.

There is quite a bit going on there, layers of meaning stacked upon one another, and very subtly done. Outstanding my friend! :celebration:

The other thing that really tugged at my sleeve was this:

I watched until he was out of sight. When and how had I gained such power? I realized how Savlian must feel being in a position of deciding who lives and dies. It was a responsibility I didn't want.

Once again, very lightly done, yet revealing quite a bit about Buffy and her feelings. All done with very tight prose, direct and to the point. Again, well done!

Finally we see Buffy heading east, along the Silverfish river. Hmmm, now what Daedra Shrine is out that way whose name starts with "P"? ;)

On nit:

I am not positive, but think you should probably put an apostrophe ' in front of 'Zoga, to show that it is a shortened form of Mazoga.

Wow! That was a very polished writing performance.
Your writing has matured so much under the subtle influence of the other writers here.
Bravo. :trophy:

And what about that Buffy. Running the show, setting things up and planning for the future.

Magnificent!

The fact that you were able to make Mazoga's signature line sound endearing instead of annoying is an achievement in itself.

I too agree with mALX1, this is your best chapter yet!

Excellent work yet again my friend. A nice training session with a friend, a night of preparation for the road, a friendly letter to brave solider, and a departure from Leyawiin. This was a very full chapter, but yet still managed to keep the quality we have grown accustom to. Thank you for being so dedicated.

I'm really enjoying the interaction between Buffy and her big friend Mazoga. They really are the odd couple. The end is good too, I wasn't expecting it. Suddenly it seems like Buffy has grown up alot and things are complicated for her. Sort of like life I guess.

(Oh, I added this with the edit thing because I forgot earlier- Thank you mALX1 and SubRosa both for the kind welcome!)

What I like about your most recent posts- everything!

Specifics- Buffy's growing sense of responsibility, which she wears with no more comfort than her mithril armor. Your evocative "environmental" descriptions, which give the writing that little bit extra touch which equals immersion. The lesson on shield-work, esp. true for someone with Buffy's slight (note I did NOT say "stringy") build.
