As Nick mentioned to me, all the Facebook Connect does is allow you to:
You could find out my real name by looking at my Facebook profile account, but the same could be said for a non Facebook account. For instance, Nick's account here (before the forum change) is nick_breckon. That leaves little mystery to what his name is. And there's no rule on Facebook that your account name has to be your real name. Nick could name his profile page Nute Gunray if he wanted to.
In most cases, at least at this point, Facebook Connect is any easy way for new members to register. If they're comfortable sharing their real name, that's okay. If they don't want to, they can just create a new account and call themselves Rune Haako.
The problem is that most forum users are probably not aware of this. Case in point: Mr. Oblivion was shocked when I told him what he was sharing and immediately wanted it removed.
If they're not aware, how can they know to change their privacy settings or name in the first place? Sure, preparing a dummy account (eg "Rune Haako") protects your privacy, but what if they aren't even aware that there is a risk?
If their privacy settings are pretty loose (and by default on Facebook, they are!), these users are inadvertently giving us a way to find out a LOT of sensitive information about them. Including their name, location, where they go to school, phone numbers (!), friends and much more besides.
Most people are not really aware of that... which makes linking profile images via Facebook a big problem. The system on this new forum actually
encourages Facebook image linking, when for security reasons it really needs to
discourage it.
At the very least, there needs to be a
WARNING!!! message in the user Control Panel, displayed when someone wants to link a Facebook picture. This will at least make people aware.
Something like this:
Warning! Please note that linking a Facebook picture will make your Facebook ID number (and hence your Facebook profile) accessible to members of the Bethesda Forums. Please check your Facebook privacy settings to ensure you are comfortable with what our Forum's members will have access to. If you are not comfortable with them seeing your Facebook profile at all, please do NOT link a Facebook image.
