Bug: Whiterun Buildings disappear from top of Stairs

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 4:04 am

A weird occurrence when I was trying AA off at top of Dragonreach stairs: Several houses to the right side of town(and even a guard climbing the stairs) would disappear completely if I had the camera angle just right. Move the camera and they would reappear. This was strange because I figured there would be less problems with AA off than on. Cranked AA back on and it this behavior stopped.

While trying to free up VRAM I disabled all mods and went from Ultra settings to High....the buildings started disappearing again.

It is completely dependant on camera angle and it isn't distance as the guard climbing the stairs disappears too and he isn't that far from me.

Has anyone else had these buildings disappear from the top of Dragonreach stairs? I cannot isolate this and it only seems to happen when I am running at lower graphics settings, not higher settings as would be logical.

There should be buildings on the right....they reappear if I move the mouse just a degree or 2.

I didn't capture it in these screens, but a guard climbing halfway up the stairs would disappear also.

It looks like you have increased the fov quite a bit from the way the buildings are skewed in the second screenshot. My guess would be that the game isn't rendering objects at the edge of the screen because of this. Make sure your sliders for object fade and actor fade aren't being changed when you move from ultra to high. Increasing them should fix the problem.

I run the FOV at 85 with ini tweaks in both

skyrim.ini (fDefaultWorldFOV=85
fDefault1stPersonFOV=85)

and skyrimprefs.ini (fDefaultFOV=85)

All my sliders are maxed except grass, specularity, and light around 3/4.

I've since tried going back to Ultra and the problem remained.

More info on some of my original settings and system can be found in this thread:

This is starting to look like an FOV problem. I can get the left hand buildings to do the same thing. In fact the whole center square with the tree disappears.

Very weird, I haven't noticed this anywhere else. I'd like to hear if anyone else can duplicate this?

I'm not sure what the cause is, but your fov looks ...odd. Like, everything is skewed horizontally, as if you were at fov 100 or something. For comparison, here is the same view on my computer.

I am testing with fov 85 and no AA, although my resolution is 1920x1200. Even accounting for the fact that I am using a 16:10 aspect ratio and you are using 16:9, there should be very little difference between the two. I don't know why your image is stretched so much, but it looks like your fov is much higher than it is.

Actually, I am at 1920x1200 also....

OK,went back and took some more screens:

I think it was the angle throwing you off as far as FOV...I am definitely at 85.

You can see in the above screens that the brazier fires still show up even tho the braziers themselves are gone in the 2nd pic.

I went even higher up in the lookout inside the Dragonreach castle and Icould not get any buildings or objects to disappear no matter what I angle I tried...and from up ther I could see the whole city. No popins across the landscape anywhere.

ps. I love the the colors on your pic....how'd you get rid of the blue tinted mountains?

Oh haha, well I am afraid I am stumped by your problem then. I have seen objects at the edge of the screen get clipped when increasing fov (Oblivion was bad for this), but never as bad as that. The gamebryo/creation engine doesn't bother rendering anything that is off camera, but it definitely shouldn't affect objects directly in front of you!

As for the colors, my game is un-modded at the moment, but the game's shading seems to change a lot depending on the weather and it was quite cloudy when I took those pics.

Are you over taxing your vram? I only ask because I use a resolution and FOV much higher then that and do not experience those issues but I'm also making sure I do not try to push for more content into vram then my cards can hold.

Nope...I had dialed down most all settings when I first noticed this. I still had a few ini tweaks going....but no mods.

My VRAM was at 800Mb on a 1G 5850 GPU
GPU Usage was running at 60-65%.
