Build Advice

Post » Tue Apr 27, 2010 9:32 pm

While I feel like a very capable F:NV player as I have all the trophies, i would like some advice or even opinions on a build to just role play the game. I have been fortunate to have created a character (face) that is very similar to my own and plan to role play as if it was me in the game.

I play on Normal/hardcoe

SPECIAL:
Strength => 5
Perception => 6
Endurance => 6
Charisma => 4/5
Intelligence => 6
Agility => 6
Luck => 7/6

Tag:
Repair
Speech
Unarmed/Survival/Melee

Traits:
Trigger Discipline
Small Frame/Kamikaze/Wild Wasteland

Anything that has a "/" means that decision is still up in the air. I would like to utilize a variety of weaponry, but mainly will carry a sighted rifle, a sidearm, and a glove or melee weapon likely a knife.

I mainly am looking for some perk suggestions to utilize my strengths and avoid useless perks. I am trying to achieve an all around build, and usually switch between VATS and firing from the hip, i sometimes scope but only if i see something sinister from a good distance (deathclaw, etc...)

Hmm, not entirely clear what the strengths are of an "all around" build, so it's tough to advise. This actually sounds pretty similar to my own "play as myself" build, except I dropped Endurance to 1 and Strength to 4 to keep combat more challenging, and resist the temptation to take some of the more powerful perks and weapons.

I will say, at least, that I love Kamikaze and Small Frame as self-nerfing traits. Kamikaze has the more noticeable bonus, I think, and Small Frame has the more noticeable detriment. I prefer Small Frame because I enjoy dealing with the risk of crippling injuries...

And just a heads up, Trigger Discipline increases action point costs of all weapons by 20%, so if you plan on using VATS much, you may want to take Action Boy once or twice (and/or Math Wrath, and/or Grim Reaper's Sprint).

ah, thank you for the pointers. Like, I said I have done a few play through(s) to get the trophies, but really want to role play this go around. I always second guess my perk choices and don't want to be extremely nerfed or over powered. I have reserved a few spots for perks i think relate well to me.

Well, if you are looking for perks of middle-of-the-road power, I'd say...

Pretty Darn Powerful, Maybe Even Overpowered
Super Slam (which you can't get with only 5 ST anyway)
Piercing Strike
Jury Rigging
Better Criticals

Pretty Decent for a Middling Guns Build
Travel Light
Rapid Reload
Silent Running
Action Boy
Cowboy

Don't Bother
Friend of the Night (works inconsistently, less effective than just adjusting brightness)
Terrifying Presence (which appears in VERY few places)
Light Step (which I loved in FO3, but seems less relevant in NV because I barely ever encounter traps)

I have no idea what you're going for? Do you plan to use energy weapons? guns? meleee/unarmed?

In all my new builds I pretty much drop CHR to 1 or 2 because it's pretty useless. It has almost zero bearing on whether you pass a speech check and I don't care about my companions DT. That helps me raise luck and other factors depending on what I hope to get out of it. Oh, and I've been putting perception around 5/6 before implants because ED-E will more than help in finding the red tick marks on your map.

So what are you going for again?

Some good points, I like piercing strike - while i agree it is very powerful is does account for the idea of striking critical areas with say a combat knife..and for limited melee use fits fairly appropriately. I got jury rigging once, and had so many caps just sitting I felt rather silly. Also, in Fo3 I would have said silent running was over powered, but there just don't seem to be that many dark corridors in this game. I appreciate the ideas though, gave me a few things to consider.

I usually take these....

Lady Killer - just enjoy the dialogue
Educated - Nice extra points
Comprehension - same as educated
Intense Training - I would assume with all the running my endurance would increase, plus an extra implant
Toughness - at least one
Finesse - I like my character's agile

To Tekshow: It says what weapons I will carry in my OP - also I said I was making it realistic (as much as possible) to myself and I am not a recluse so I will keep my charisma near 4 or 5

One trait that suggests an all round build is good natured, as it imposes a penalty to weapon skills, and since you'll most likely only use one anyway thats - 5 points.

In exchange you get a boost to those skills that everyone has at least some RL skill in, and in NV makes a jack'o trade character but master at non build easier imo.

Ignore some of the toughness, and other skills, yes they make the game easier, but so does putting thought and making a plan, it's better to not be hit at all than take semi / full automatic fire from multipules with 20% effectiveness.

A high charisma + lady killer, + good natured means no skill check for half the game will fail I have found, and helps companions keep big guys down for you.
