build your own house

i think a better idea would be if you could see a list of furniture you could buy and place it anywhere you wanted...but not build it yourself :P and buy new rooms like upgraded kitchen and for example ''tower'' for you castle

a house building mode would be too much simulator like... i would prefer a mode like in knights of the nine where you buy furniture and they bring it to your house! just that you pay workers to build something in/on your house! - I am a warrior and not some poor guy who has to work for some famous dragon killer!!

I actually made a post about this and ideas for rooms and how the actual application of the house would work at this forum: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1170569-houses-in-skyrim/

If Bethesda decided to use the OP's idea, would we use a carpenter to do our work for the houses or would we 'make' them ourselves? I defiantly like the idea about collecting our own materials to make the house and therefore get more pride out of the house (I went on a whole tangent on this with the linked forum).

I'd love to build my own house. I remember I started getting into modding in Morrowind just to make my own house because I wanted this huge house with everything and even a hidden entrance to a big dungeon but the house never came out quite the way I planned it.

If I remember correctly, vanilla Morrowind had a system where the PC could choose from three sites, and house designs. Later as gameplay progressed, the selected home was improved, to include addition of buildings, static items, and NPCs.

In the vanilla Bloodmoon expansion, there were a series of quests for Raven Rock, wherein, the PC performed quests that helped in the development of the Raven Rock Colony, to include NPCs, a choice of lots for the PC's personal home, and finally the completed construction of the home, to include static items, as well as plenty of storage.

So, to my way of thinking, it is well within the lore of TES for there to be lot choice, type of home, and gradual development ofthat real estate.

And of course in Oblivion, there were several homes available. One could choose one or all.

However, it has been a while, but it was something like that. None of this required any DLC, or mods.

You are correct, there were 3 sites but it was the Political House Faction you sided with in the game that chose the location for you in Morrowind.

Then there was a number of quests that were linked with your progression within the faction and the initial building of the house and its development.

This I think would be great to implement into Skyrim, If you can join one of the Nord Clans involved in the civil war, and have ahome built for you in their respective town/village where you have to complete quests and raise in the ranks and collect materials to build it and develop it, until becoming the chiefan and building your own mead hall.

I could see conjuration being able to make some small shack or hut for a temp base of operations.. and then using say soulstones and more powerful conjurations or alterations turn it into a tower over a few game weeks.

Yes,

And I have felt that there should be some significance to allying oneself to a specific faction, or tribe. One of them being the possiblity to establish a home. I would even further this by being able to favorably trade, therein, and perhaps gain quest related access to deeper inter/intraqersonal relationships within that particular group.

People need to stop thinking of things like this in terms of what other games have done. The point is, in reality people build houses; it doesn't matter what other games allow you to do this or what you think of those games. This would be great for roleplaying.

Well, how about this? Remember the way you were able to build your house in Morrowind? How about something like that? You go out, find/buy/earn a deed or piece of land, and then through some fashion get a hold of someone who can arrange some workers to come out and build your place. Based on what sort of money you put forth, you can pick certain options on customization, like how you picked things for your house in Oblivion but a bit more decision oriented so you have a specific type of home.

Size of the place (large/small one story, large house with small second floor with balcony).
You could pick your style, sorta like the themes in Fallout, like Luxurious/Rich, Practical, Warmonger, Survivor, etc.
Special features could be things like Fortified, Booby-Trapped, Dead Weight (Enchanted so anyone trying to attack with a metal weapon is extremely Burdened), etc.

To top it all off, you could get some 'Blueprints', like some sketches done by someone that would show the finished version of the inside/outside of your home.

Just some thoughts that sounded not to bad. Not horrible atleast, and not really Simsy for those not interested in that stuff. You could customize to a point, and still get what you want. :foodndrink:

Please see my above post... my reasoning has more depth than "omg itz 2 simzy" I'm all for taking inspiration from other games, but designing houses would be very hard to do well in a game like TES, and I wouldn't want the game ruined by a poorly implemented mechanic which is totally non essential to the game anyway.

then dont use it? having a little mechanic in the game would ruin it how..? if you dont want it then dont use it but dont limit other people. also saying "mod it in" is stupid because not everybody can mod/have the pc version

lol wow i didnt expect this to get this big... any ways i know i can build my own house using the CK but its a real head ache and it can get really tedious and bothersome going through they're extensive menu's to find a chair.

anyways i would want it to be a quest you had to do for a lord or something and thy give you some land and tell you if you need workers to let him know that he is in your debt. you would then essentially draw out the blue prints and pick the materials and let the workers do it for you so you could go out and have fun.

i would want furniture to either be built with materials that you have collected or be bought out of catalog. as far as placement i would want a system similar to the CK but not with the having to adjust it to the ground. basically select a chair out of furniture menu after you built/bought it and place it in the room you want. you can then select it again and adjust its movement and turn angle. not like sims though where its by square sections, complete free movement.

you could select a painting and then select the wall you want it to be on. then select where on the wall using the same mechanic as the floor with the chair.

you could select a book shelf and place books in it and select a sub menu of how you want it to sit in the shelf. you can select books for this in house inventory or personal inventory.

I wouldn't mind being able to have some choices in how my house is built or decorated, but I'm not sure if I'd care to be able to build it or decorate it all myself. That does sound a bit silly for an Elder Scrolls game.

I admit it would be interesting to have the option, but they can only pack so much into the game, and there are plenty of other things I'd rather them work that I'd do and use much more often.

Now one thing I'd like to see is for houses to have more uses and features than just being a place to throw around all your loot.

Play minecraft if you want to build houses, usually in a TES game you just buy a house and pay an NPC to furnish it for you.

People don't understand how much time and extra effort (+GBs) these kind of request/wishes would need.. Better stick to basic nonsense stuff,
Would you want that quests would be 20-30% svckier and world wouldn't be that rich .. and all u can do is build ur own house and live there.. it's pointless people.

are these forums flooded with 15 year olds :P?

I remind, Skyrim is 18+, okay, u can secretly play it, but you can't make wishes/arguments about game ! :D

Build your own house far enough design mode.......doesn't really fit the elder scrolls and the engine isn't really designed for it

I think it would be easy if it you just had an architect and he would ask for logs/ores/coins

Maybe five stages of a house.

1. Shack
2. Small House
3. Average Home
4. Large Home
5. Manor

Kind of like a Animal Crossing like development. The house gets bigger as you invest more money into it. Something simple like that.

A color scheme wouldn't be too hard either. Just buy a color scheme from the architect like you would buy furniture for Oblivion and BAM it changes the color of rugs/draqes etc.

Furniture and ETC would be placed for you like Oblivion.

I'm not dismissing it just because it was in the Sims. But I don't think the Elder Scrolls is, or ever should be about designing houses, crafting furniture, picking draqes etc... there are games like that out there, but it seems too mundane for TES. I don't think it could be implemented without being cheesy.

That's somewhat anologous (which I totally had to spell check) to saying not to use the construction kit and then suggesting it's not part of the Elder Scrolls experience. What is Elder Scrolls about? I've loved Elder Scrolls since Arena and I certainly wouldn't feel put off by a house building feature. I think it would be better managed by making use of the NPCs but the OP's idea has merit.
