Building fences and other asinine things in Fallout 4.

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 9:18 am

I have been playing Fallout 4 for a week now and I am totally unable to build walls....as in fences around Sanctuary Hills. I have even watched How To videos. I can't do it. I cannot get those [censored] pieces to fit together, to save my ugly existence. Even trying to put together buildings is a hassle. for me. I realize that the environment we are playing in a post nuclear fallout era, but the fact still remains I like straight lines to work with. I really hope someone mods a player home at the least. There is a saved game mod out now, but the protagonist is a male and I am playing a female character and do not want to spend hours recreating her. That was bad enough. Just venting I guess.

The Junk Fences are horrible to put together. I just use the wood floor foundation, or the concrete ones and then build walls on them. (You should use them for buildings too if you're not already, makes things SO much easier)

Thanks for the tip. I did manage to put up a wire fence around one of my empty lots, where I place several large generator, the Windmill and the beacon.

I also found that if you want to build a second story on a building, it lines up better if you put up flooring pieces on top of the roof, then you don't get gaps between the walls and the roof as mine did not want to sit on the roof panels, rather above them.

You even have to stand sideways to ATTEMPT to square something up. Arguably, apocalypse or not, when building a structure you need to square your corners. And, in building fences you have to follow the lay….contour of the land. It cannot be haphazard like Bethesda wishes it to be.

I fill in gaps using fence posts. Adds to my "wasteland aesthetic" as well.

I gave up. I spent 3 hours getting Sanctuary setup as it is.

There's a different flooring option for the top floors to avoid that.

I have also found that if you are having difficulty fitting things in place, sometimes it is best to place it where you can. Then get a different angle on the piece and then grab it to place it.

I'm also wondering...

I want to completely avoid doing settlement stuff. I have all my power armor, mags, bobbleheads, junk, weighty aids, etc stored in the Red Rocket outside of Sanctuary. Yesterday the BoS dropped right outside the settlement and started a firefight with molerats. They shot at me when I came running up but then they just dropped hostility and wandered off. I went back to work and a few minutes later a bunch of raiders started attacking Dogmeat while I was crafting. I'm a bit worried that NPC's and the AI is going to wander in and start stealing stuff, which is the ENTIRE reason I moved my stuff OUT of Sanctuary. Am I going to be forced to build walls and turrets everywhere I set up camp? I'd stick everything in my locked house in Diamond City but they don't have every kind of crafting bench there, just a Workbench and Power Armor station IIRC.

Personally my base of operations is only accessible by me, You can do this by building a multi-floor tower, set-up your shop lets say on the second or third floor,

place the fast travel mat on that floor and then go and remove the lower floors so it hovers in the air. that way the only way you can access the room is by fast traveling there,

or by building stairs when you arrive and remove them when you leave.

Ooh, that's a good idea! I'll have to look more at base building then. I found it too complicated at first, especially when I just wanted to start killin baddies.

I hardly ever go into the fence section. I built a wall all the way around Sanctuary by using the large basic wall in the building section and I use a lot of end pieces when I want to change elevation or change direction. The large basic building wall will just snap onto the previous one so it is real easy to make very long wall lines. I also tie sections of my walls into the Hedges or sides of houses. I have three gates, thinking of making it two, I put up all my manned defenses barriers and turrets protecting the gates. It works great. It does not look perty but it works.

Use fence posts. Just space them enough apart where you can't fit through them.

Not only are they much nicer in appearance, they have the same protection as those ugly walls.

This allows for much more flexibility than having those "6 foot wide" straigh lines, and offers 100% better visibility.

Just remember to put gates in some areas as your settlers need to "travel". Protect your weak spots with turrets and you're all set.

Hope this helps! :)

That is an interesting idea, since I have a ton of wood and I used up a ton of steel building all my walls in all my settlements. What about areas with hills or cliffs close by, I can easily jump over them from the outside, are all the rift raft out there too dumb to just jump over?
