Building Fences Around Settlements?

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 3:08 pm

Has anyone built fences around their whole settlement so it is confined, like Megaton? If so, how does it work?

When your settlement is attacked, do you actually see it happen or does it always happen when you are away, and your defence success rate depends on your defence rating? Since erecting fences around the settlement doesn't increase the rating, it would be pointless.

Or can you actually see it happen and help your settlement out, and the fences actually do a good job in keeping them out?

However, is it possible for the fences to do too good of a job, and therefore it becomes boring as no attackers can challenge you?

You get a notification telling you that one of your settlements is being attacked & you best drop what you're doing & fast travel there to help.

i did it with sanctuary and actually it's a waste of rescources because some of the spawn points are situated directly into the settlement.

@svck900 ... there seems to be a bug or i am to stupid but for me it didn't work. i traveled back, killed everyone/everything (even one of the settlers turned against the group) and still couldn't end the "attack quest". outcome is that i "failed" and every settler except one got killed. :(

Wow that's really lame if they spawn inside the damn settlement. :glare:

I've created a tight perimeter around the garage in sanctuary as well as around the removable lot next to it. Nothing manages to get in.

If this is true, all strategy to build defenses are useless...man, how disappointing.

not at all. if you just build defenses around the "core buildings" it should work, according to mikedzines.

BEST IDEA is to take hagmans ally and make that your base. it is completely enclosed and easy to fortify. It is small but I built vertical and it is epic. It is 100% defended and no one can touch it :)

FYI it is in the middle of the city

Yeah, but I dont want to protect only "core buildings". I feel resposible for my setlers, so building walls to guarantee their safety was my main priority.

How often does this happen with a regular sized settlement? My original plan was to get through the game without fast travelling at all. Once I saw the way Power Armour is fuelled I amended that to 'without fast travelling unless I need power armour for a mission' and I guess I can stretch it to 'without fast travelling unless my settlement is under attack' but even that's likely to be pointless if I can't make a single long journey without having to fast travel back at least once.

don't know ... i only had eight settlers, one became an enemy while i was defending ... was my first (and only) attack because i can't end the "attack quest" and because of this it auto fails and everyone except one settler dies

I confirm this is very annoying:

1- Building fences, which seems to be the first thing to do for any settlements, are very consuming in the "size limit" of the settlements which is frustrating when we expect to do great works.

2- Spawning inside the settlement is very dumb. 3 raiders spawned in Sanctuary hills inside the fences, by the time I get there, a raider took my T60 all custum Power Armor witch was on the most protected core of the settlement.

So Bethesda, there are at least two major improvements to do:

- Expend / Cancel size limitations on settlements;

- Spawn threat on the outsides of settlements and not inside.

I thought about making something that looked like a Castle Defense game and force the raiders through a maze with gun turrets on every corner and deathtraps within. But if they are spawning inside the settlement that becomes moot. Who the heck would think that's a good idea anyway?

I made elevated turrets around my settlements so hope they work when the time comes...

simple ... no ... did the same at the gates with turrents before and a second perimeter behind it ... they spawned dircetly behind the second perimeter and the turrents didn't do anything about it

I heard that you should take the fusion core out of the power armor when you are not using it so no one else will take it. Too late for you now, but nice to know fro future reference.

The easiest thing to do is store the whole set in your workbench. then take it out and assemble when you want to use it. This protects it :)

with this crap inventory-system it is a pain in the ass to scroll until you find your stuff. easiest is to take out the cores and take them with you, because they don't have any weight ^^

but we should try to keep on topic - settlement building ^^

Actually I've taken back the armor pieces and put them in an other frame, needs some repair but it's ok. It seems pretty much obvious to me that we should have a key system on such powerful equipments. But whatever.

The main subject of the thread i the fences: So:

- Spawning threats outside

- Expending size limits (Btw, my fences are metal walls, so please just don't retrieve the junk fences of the size limitations)

If Bethesda willing to give us the opportunity to build whatever we want, ... let us the ability to build whatever we want! :D

An easy fix is to add a perk... local leader 3 (triples object limit)

You should definitely DONT do that. You will probably lose the set, because all things in the worskshop will be scrapped if needed. If you really want to store them, best put in a chest.

Item limit is not some arbitrary number to limit our creativity. It's there for a technical reason and just adding a perk isn't going to fix that

You're right but I think this is irrelevant.

In deed, there is much more dense areas such as Diamond city than the most dense things our settlements let us do (of course this one is optimized).

Furthermore, I've been hitting the limit only by putting ground leveling (concrete floors) and metal wall fences which are definitely not ressource using ...

So I'll agree with you for some elements such as lights, turrets or anything dynamic. Walls and floors should not be counted ;-)
