Building PC for Oblivion, need advice

Post » Fri May 02, 2014 3:53 am

Need advice on computer build for Oblivion. Been playing on my laptop, which has an ?i7 2.4 ghz processor, 8 GB of ram and a GT 750M graphics card, but it sometimes struggles ?with framerates given all the mods I have running (QTP3-R, UL, Better Cities, etc.). Didn’t ?notice it too much until I fired up the Xbox right after playing on the PC. Then the difference ?in framerates was dramatic.?

At first I was going to buy a prebuilt system, but I couldn’t find one with the ?specifications I wanted, and now I think I want to build one. Sounds like a fun project, and I ?might learn a thing or two in the process. My goal is to be able to run heavily modded Oblivion ??(~150 esm/esp files and lots of texture replacers) at the best possible framerate for a price of ?around $2,000-$2,500.?
Here’s what I am currently considering after a couple days of internet research:?

Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Hero ?
CPU: Intel i5 4670k?
GPU: GE ForceGTX 780ti?
SSD Crucial M500 960 GB
Power Supply: Seasonic X850w
RAM: 32 GB of brand of DDR3 1600 RAM

Cooling, fans, case, optical drive, haven’t researched yet, but the above items seem to ?be the most important and the ones that will add most to the cost.?

Does anyone see any flaws, or have any advice? Particularly with the GPU. My thought ?there was just to get the top of the line. The AMD Radeon R9 290 got a lot of reviews saying ?how loud it was, so I don’t want to go with that one, but I am debating whether to go with a ?cheaper Nvidia, like maybe a 770 and then upgrade to a Maxwell 800 series when they are ?released. But then I think it could be a while before the Maxwell 800 is released, and I will ?only save a few hundred bucks by going cheaper on the GPU, which does not seem like much ?when you are building a $2,000 rig. And eventually the 780ti will come down in price and with ?this setup, I could at some point put two in and run them in SLI. Is that a good plan?? I have heard that the processor is more important for Oblivion than the GPU, but with high res replacers and distanct land, I will need a fast GPU, won't I?

To sum up, my main goal is to run modded Oblivion as fast as humanly possible given ?the constraints of the Oblivion engine. Cost is not as important to me ?as performance, but I want to keep it in reason and stay close to the $2,000-$2,500 price point for the ?finished product.?

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!?

For shopping help, we've got this: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1499612-the-community-tech-thread-no-138/

You may get more insight there as the Oblivion support boards are pretty dead these days.

Thanks. That's helpful. There are also some good links in the OP of that thread.
