Building a PC for Skyrim

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:28 pm

Was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to build me a PC to run Skyrim comfortably from here - http://www.custompc.ie/?gclid=CMOJmtvPy6cCFQod4Qodj1gMCw, I realize we don't know the minimum specs yet, so an educated guess is all I'm really after. Budget of about 1000 euro, preferably less (unless I'm just daydreaming with that price range). :brokencomputer: :thanks:

Personally, I'd recommened you get a hold of the latest issue of PC Gamer. They always have a good hardware section, as well as all the techy names which I forget.
They have a 'PC gamer Rig' which is updated monthly, and that costs under 1000 pounds to build (yes I know euros are less than pounds), this months was just a shade over 900 I think, and thats from the ground up.

In short: Quad Core, Two Direct X 11 graphics capable cards, and a healthy amount of RAM (several GB) as well as Windows 7 (safe bet, dunno if they'll support XP, its over 10 years old), maybe a SSD (Solid State Drive, a faster type of Hard drive)

If you order the parts seperatly and find a put-them-together-yourself guide, you might be able to skimp on the Mottherboard (I recommend an SLI capable one), convential Hard Drives if you've already got them, mouse and keyboard if your happy. I would recommened a nice monitor, however, it makes a surprising difference :) That wa, you'll also cut on service charges that website probably charges.

Skyrim isn't going to be *that* demanding a game. I seriously doubt you would need two DX11 graphics cards to get the best out of it.

A decent quad core, 4GB ram and a graphics card that costs somewhere between £100 and £150 (A GTX 460 is a pretty good choice) will do you absolutely fine unless the engine turns out to be horribly unoptimised.

Well considering it's a late 2011 release I think I would at least hold off buying anything until at least we see Intel release their 2011 platform, or socket 2011 if you will, even if you won't be building a high end system I assume that's the time we will see new additions to the 1155 line and most likely a price drop as well considering AMD Brazos? is launching somewhere in the same timeframe... most likely we'll see another generation of GPU's before the launch of Skyrim as well and like I stated earlier, even if you are not building the highest spec PC you can and don't need the latest and greatest, if you are in fact building the PC for Skyrim, no need to buy it today at today's prices :P

Hmm not very helpful was I? Well Tomshardware.com does a good job of giving you idea of what you might be looking for with it's monthly PC-build competition where they choose 4 PC builds in the segments ranging from 500$ - 2000$ and correct me if I am wrong but I am fairly certain they test the contributions and and whichever gives the most bang for buck is the winner in it's respective segment, yes?

The more you spend now the less you will spend later updating it, my gaming rig is atleast 4 years old and it plays Crysis flawlessly.

Personally, if I were going to build a new rig for playing Skyrim, I'd wait until it was released or until we got it's requirements. At least then you'd know what you needed it to do. Right now it'd just be guessing. In addition, with the way technology advances, the stuff you'd probably get better parts then for the same price as you would now.

Theres the one I'm building. As you can see I don't have an HDD or a monitor, mainly because I already have those. If you add an HDD or SSD (Not REALLY needed, but it will cut load times) you will get closer to 1100 American so you would have another 300 to spend before hitting the equivalent of your 1k euros. This is arguably the best PC I have ever had I was gonna go 6 core but I'll give it a few more years before bothering. I'm sure I will be able to handle Skyrim, it should be able to handle most games you can throw at it nowadays at high settings. The reason I got that gfx card is because I plan to use it to expand to a 3 monitor setup when I get an extra 250 to spend.

I would have to question what you mean by "as to build me a PC", if you mean come up with a list of suitable hardware, I'd imagine that'd be possible, but without the minimum/recommended specs being released yet, it's still some what guess work, but with a budget of €1000 I certainly think you could build a good system capable of handling some fairly good graphics, but it'd probably not be pushing the graphics as well as a machine built after we know those specs. On the other hand, if you mean "as to build me a PC", in actually building it, then the answer to that is going to be a big big NOOOOO, to many potential issues could come about over that one.

I wish Todd Howard would just come right out and say "here is exactly what you need to fully maximize Skyrim". And then he shows all us prospective PC builders part by part what would run Skyrim like butter. Bethesda should flat out partner with Ibuypower or Cyber Power PC and create the "Skyrim Machine"....If it had the Skyrim logo on the side of the case...dude that would be cool.

Your avatar scares the [censored] outta me. But this is a good idea. I would love to buy a Skyrim PC but I wouldn't dare buying one because I could just customize my case myself. Not gonna spend an extra 600 for a PC cause it has the ES logo on it lol.

Bethesda likely don't know exactly what's needed, and won't until it's near-finished.

Also, even though I know what a bad idea prebuilt gaming PCs are, I would be really tempted by that logo.

If I were building a PC now, this is what I would get:

But I am waiting until mid-late October for prices to drop.

I have a Phenom II X4 Quad Core Processor and a Radeon HD 4870. Do you guys think this will be sufficient for what Skyrim might demand?

Thanks, I'll have to look into upgrading. I want nothing less than max settings.

NP. But if you plan to upgrade you're probably looking at a whole new system if you current mobo doesn't support the newer CPUs and GPUs.

I'm probably just going to upgrade my CPU to a Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition. I have Windows 7 OEM, so I can't really get a new mobo unless I want to throw down some more money for that.

Do you think a Radeon HD 5870 would be good enough or should I go higher yet? I'm on a bit of a budget, but I assume most of these graphic cards will come down about $50 by year's end.

If you're partial to ATI, go with the 6870.

probably a medium end 600-800 usd computer. The game is designed around the 360 so yeah even a 500-600 USD computer will be fine.

Since all the games will "look the same" you'll probably be fine with a nvidia 8800 or a 9800.

If you're getting it primarily for Skyrim, I would advise waiting till mid-late summer. Not only will you probably have a better idea of the min/optimum specs, but you'll also be able to meet them for less money, since prices will undoubtedly be going down in the meantime.

That's what I'm doing at least.

I wouldn't buy anything until the game is nearly out - or, better yet, wait a week and read the reviews.

Prices will drop across the board on everything, so you either get more bang for your buck, or more bang period.

My dilemma is whether or not to upgrade my GTS 250. I am definitely going to have to upgrade the CPU, since it's only a dual-core Athlon 64 (5600+) but I'm not sure I can splash the cash for a video card as well. May have to live with lower settings for a bit.

WAIT! If you're getting this for Skyrim wait until October or November! PC technology improves and drops in price too quickly to buy so soon! In particular AMD Bulldozer may have a significant impact on the prices of current model CPUs.

Not exactly true, they can provide us with the specs of the machines they use to playtest the game on the highest settings.
