Building a no-magic Redguard

Post » Wed Aug 12, 2015 2:27 am

I'm trying to create a Redguard swordsman who has the traditional distrust of magic. So he won't be casting spells, or putting any perk points in the magic schools. The problem I'm having is deciding how he'll heal. Right now he's using the basic healing spell, drinking potions he finds (he won't make any), and looking for plants he can eat, but we're uneasy about that healing spell and want to give it up. At some point I'll use the console to take it away, but right now it's the safety net. He may learn to cook, as that's different from alchemy, and generally produces the effects he wants.

I'm undecided if he'll use enchanted gear he finds. Of course he'll never learn to make his own, or recharge anything, but using up the charges on found items might be OK. It may be moot if his Smithing keeps non-magical improved stuff far enough ahead. But I know he'll be tempted by anything that adds health regen.

The other choice to make is whether he decides between one- and two-handed swords, or advances both skills. And then there's dual-wield versus blocking with a shield. Decision, decisions...

I have a Redguard right now as my main who has never touched a healing spell or dabbled in alchemy. Looted potions only. It's not that difficult, IMO.

My very first Morrowind character was a Redguard who used no magic. I didn't know how magic worked then so she ended up casting no spells by default. She wore mostly Light Armor until she stumbled across a set of Ordinator armor during a walking tour around the perimeter of the island. She did no Alchemy and did no Enchanting (I didn't know these things even existed).

She wielded claymores exclusively. She drank a few potions, mostly health potions. I don't recall if she equipped any pre-enchanted gear or not. Probably not. I hated that ugly saran-wrap look.

Sounds about like my first. A Redguard that didn't even know enchanting and alchemy were a thing. Smithing information, of course, is kind of provided in Riverwood, so that wasn't too difficult. As usual, my first character fell into the sneaky assassin type without magic. I've only recently (within the last year or so) begun seriously messing with magic at all other than maybe a basic healing spell. I think my Nord heavy warrior used healing and he treated it like praying. It wasn't so much a spell as a Communion with Talos.

I've done a lot of characters that use no magic or alchemy. Only using healing potions that they find. They will never buy any. As stated, it's not hard

Shoot, I just realized this is the Skyrim forum, not the Morrowind forum. :blush2: There's getting to be too many of these forums for me to keep track of anymore.

That's what we call a "senior moment." :)

Lady stone and fortify health regen enchants are useful. Absorb health is very useful too.

Considering skill boosts and racial power of redguards, a good build for them is light armor+dual wielding. If you have dual flurry 2/2 with absorb health daggers, wew. Also +75% stamina regen from lady stone+wind walker.

Since you're not investing in magicka, and not too much in stamina either cause you're going for that wind walker+lady stone combo, you can get a buttload of health, which increases health regen too.

BTW, hanging moss+bear claws will make a potion fitting for your skillset.

What difficulty setting are you using? I think the build will work fine until you hit Master or Legendary.

Hopefully, part of your strategy will include strategic retreats...

How about followers? Does your PC feel ok about having someone else tag along? That goes a long way to helping out. Maybe you can employ a follower only at Master and Legendary difficulty.

I never touch the difficulty unless the game is cheating. I did that once when it spawned a Legendary Dragon on my low-level character and it could one-shot her with breath or bite. I looked up the leveled list and it was 15 levels higher than was possible - but it still happened!

If I want more difficulty, I reduce the character's choices, like this no-magic rule.

---

As for followers, Al the Alik'r just lost his Lydia during a raid on a Legion fort in the Civil War campaign. She wasn't near enough to him to get hit, so I think she took a stray arrow while in bleedout. Of course in those quests you have a bunch of Stormcloak soldiers as distractions, too. He's just bought Hjerim and I modded Calder into a female Redguard, but I'm not sure if he'll risk taking her with him.

He's in steel, with a scimitar and a banded shield, all tempered as high as he can currently manage. Nothing enchanted, of course. He wears an Alik'r hood that he took from the mercenaries with Kematu when he got the scimitar. I know it will stop him using the Well-fitted and Matching Set perks, but that may be OK. It appears that by limiting his skill trees, he's getting ahead on the ones he does use, and that should persist for a while.

We've gone heavy and shield this time because I've already played the dual-wield Redguard style (she wore light armor, and not much of that!)
