Burial Rites In Morrowind

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:55 am

The Dunmer of course, are laid to rest in their tombs and the Bosmer cannibalize their dead. But what about everyone else? You never find any graveyards or anything else that Argonian,Khajiit,Imperial,Altmer,Orc,Redguard,Breaton or Nords could be entombed in...why is that?

Well, in Oblivion there are graveyards and tombs so that takes care of the Imperials.
As for the other races, I'm not sure, though I bet the majority of the other human races' way of burial is similar.

... Wait, don't the Altmer put their dead in some tower or something?

I am talking about in Morrowind which is why this is in the MORROWIND section.

Oh, sorry. I thought you just meant in general.
I guess the devs just didn't want to take away from the whole Dunmer culture by having all these other graves, tombs, and whatnot.

I think if Dunmer aren't buried in one of the untold number of Ancestral Tombs then they are taken to Necrom and buried in that massive Necropolis and Great House Tombs.

Necrom

"The City of the Dead", Necrom perpetuates a religious tradition that predates the Tribunal cult. From across Morrowind, Dark Elves of every clan bring their dead in solemn processions that can last for months. From the mainland, Necrom, with its lofty walls and white towers, appears to be an immense necropolis, an impression that is strengthened by the constant traffic of corpses across the causeway into the city, a traffic which never ceases, day or night. In fact, the city teems with life: a vast and complex heirarchy of priests and attendants whose sole duty is to prepare the dead for the afterlife and deposit their bodies with the appropriate ritual into the catacombs which honeycomb the rock beneath the city.

Perhaps they're sent back to their country of ethnic origin OR sent to Necrom, Morrowind's necropolis, though this may only be for Dunmer.

Maybe someoen has to go up and dispose their corpse like in game...

Shallow roadside graves? Burial at sea? Stripped clean by cliff racers? Cremation? (I actually cremated my fallen foes in MW. I'd dispose of the body and toss whatever was on it - clothes, weapons, items - on the next fire I found.)

It seems likely that they're returned to their homeland after they croak. Owyn makes a crack about how a Nordic Arena opponent will have to be "sent back to Skyrim in pieces" once I had dispatched with her. It could just be a figure of speech, but it seems to lend some credence to the corpse-deportation theory.

No, not the Skaal. Well, they might use it too, but most of the grave burrows are graves of other Nords, fighting in various wars in the region and it's surroundings.

From Bloodmoon Dialogue: The Skaal consider the Stalhrim to be holy. During the great war with the Dark Elves, many heroes fell in battle. Some could not be returned to Skyrim, and were buried here. Great magicks were worked on their tombs to protect their belongings from grave robbers, and their corpses from worse things. Energy was drawn from the land itself, and our heroes were encased in tombs of ice. That ice is Stalhrim.
- Graring.

The same thing is written in the http://www.imperial-library.info/zeph/tes_tre_3/s.shtml#s

Oh, and remember, Graring is not Skaal. He is an outcast, for he learnt how do make things out of Stalhrim. And probably because he used that knowledge, too.
We learned that Stalhrim can be forged much like iron or steel. We were made outcasts for it; the Skaal are too narrow-minded to understand its practical value.

I don't know. Unless magically preserved, or the corpses wouldn't last. I don't know if there would be that many mages willing to travel across the nations with dead guys. Unless there's money in it, of course. Rich people, no doubt, could afford to send their dead back home, but poor people probably can't.

And then again, why would they? It's just a province.

The Foreign Quarter of Vivec do have a tomb in it's lower levels. But I wonder if foreigners are buried there, or just dunmer living in the plaza.

The Dunmer of course, are laid to rest in their tombs.

Not before they are cremated though. Traditions changed a few times though.

Oblivion has tombstones and cemetaries.

The game, not the place.

They just use the 'dispose of corpse' option. Duh.

And the corpses that cannot be disposed of are just left there. Ala Mr Hlaalo.
