Buses and You

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:17 pm

Well, a good friend of mine is possibly moving houses to somewhere that I can't possibly hope to walk to, so I have decided that its time to learn about buses! YAY!

Ehem... anyways, I have a few questions since the only Public Transportation I ever used to use is Silt Striders. Is there a way I could find some list with Bus Locations, Times, and Destinations for my area. I also am curious for those of you that have bought Bus Passes, do they let you bring one person onboard with you, or would I need to buy one for my friend as well?

And finally. Post in this thread some Bus Stories you folks have!

Find your city's website. There should be a public transportation section.

As far as bus passes, we have Dart around here and the bus pass is for you only, though you can buy one way tickets or Day Passes. Day Passes are usually a better option if you're stopping more than twice.

Reeeeally depends on where you live. Usually, googling "[cityname] bus" should get you to the website of your local transportation administration. You need a ticket per person, unless there are some sort of special group tickets available (which I've personally never heard of). If you're in Europe, you can probably expect pretty good public transport. If you're in the US, probably not. The only bus stories I have involve crazy (potentially homeless, drunk, and/or high) old dudes trying to tell me about jesus.

You should be able to find all that info on your cities website (it will vary by city)

normally a pass won't let you bring a passenger.

As for buses >_< I hates them. The only actual car accidents I've been involved in were on a bus. My school bus t-boned a minivan when i was a kid

and an suv t-boned the bus I was on (hit right where I was sitting...) when I was in college

well and another bus I was on ran out of gas in the middle of an extremely busy intersection...

come to think of it, there was that time i took the gry house bus from Podunk, Missouri to Syracuse, New York. It only took two days, but by the end of the trip i had made out with a girl (was 15 at the time, so I felt like the man), turned down numerous drug dealers and witnessed an aisle fight that resulted in two fellows getting ejected from the bus in The Middle of Nowhere, Ohio

I can't speak for the rest of the nation, but where I live, I used to take the bus and I never had any trouble with anyone. The only problems I had was that they kept cutting bus service and routes because of the economy.

I jillionth the city website. You can plan the route, including stops, availablity, and times, in case you and your friends plan to go other places. You can decide whether you will need a monthly pass, or pay on a per use basis. Usually the city allows the public to purchase at the main transit station, or partners with other business to offer the conveinence of city transportation passes.

I got my son one last summer, he used it to get home from track and cc practices, and from summer religion classes.
Passes are for one person's use and usually not transferrable.

At 15 years old, why were you taking a bus from Missouri to New York?

As far as crazy bus experiences go, at University of Delaware, one of the late night bus drivers use to blast techno. It was the bus everyone wanted to get on.

Down here, when I worked at the boardwalk a couple years ago, my coworkers and I got on the bus after work (at like 1am) and a chick had just thrown up all over the front seats. ....we waited for the next one.

If you're going to be taking more than one bus, always leave early, and be prepared to arrive late. I would take a bus to the next town, and then one from that stop to the college I was going to, and I couldn't count how many times I would get home late, sometimes several hours late, because one bus would be behind schedule and cause me to miss the next one in the chain.

That gave me a mental imagine of a obsidian black bus driving by with green, purple, and orange lights flashing out of the window and the Ghostbusters sitting on top firing beams at oncoming traffic.

It's funny, you use slightly off terminology, like a 19th century socialite learning the ways of the lower classes. It's the first time I've heard a bus stop called a "bus location". :P

The only buses I caught were to college and back. Sometimes it was a standard public bus, usually it was an earmarked college bus. It was very crowded and usually involved waiting in the dark for the other buses to leave the grounds first. The population of the bus varied among the unwashed student masses but you stood a surprisingly high chance of being molested by a bisixual emo most of the time.

Nowadays I take trains to uni, much faster, generally cleaner and warmer, usually full of businessmen and pretty dentistry students.

Well as said before its best to check your city's transportation website. From my experience and where I live the bus comes like every 15-20 minutes or so. I really don't have any crazy bus stories... I was a bad kid in high school, me and my buddies one time ditched school and the campus monitor came up to us and asked why we were walking away from the school and not to it as he was suspicious. We made up this bull [censored] story that we went to another school and we got dropped off at this school because we spent the night at a friends house. He believed us god knows why, I guess we had 100% in speech skill :P We then took the Bus to the Las Vegas strip and played DDR and arcade games for 6 hours and took the bus back to our friends house where we hung out and smoked Chinese brand cigarettes. My friend was full blooded Chinese and his parents were from China. I really don't recommend ditching school or smoking cigarettes if your still in high school please don't follow me as an example! I think back... how stupid I should have done better in school! I wish I would have took high school more seriously I had to take the [censored] level math and english courses when I started in college!

My friend told me a crazy bus story not too long, he was on the bus and some guy was flicking his ears, he got really pissed off and knocked the guy out!

My only semi-interesting story about riding a bus was going from Annapolis MD to Baltimore (a little over 20 miles). The bus was a Baltimore City bus that made a run down there every hour or so. When I boarded the bus in front of the state capitol in Annapolis almost all the riders were white. As it headed north through the suburban area of Anne Arundel County white people got off and more black people got on. By the time I got to the Inner Harbor in Baltimore I was the only white person left on a packed bus. Kind of an interesting demographic observation of life in a big Eastern city (and coming from California quite different for me). I've never experience segregation like that. Whites tend to live in the suburbs and work in downtown Baltimore while blacks live in Baltimore City and tend to work in the suburbs. Go figure.

Look up Bus Schedules.

Also Bus times are shown on lists on some Bus waiting areas. Usually the ones with the frames around the bench.

Also be prepared for strange people to get on the TARC. Strange people.

List of people I've met.

1. I once saw a man with a very blotchy red nose that looked lie a tumor.
2. This middle aged lady who would force you to buy candy from her for Kosair kids.
3. Thugs, and other jerks.
4. Also the strangest was a man who was clearly homeless and had something mentally wrong about him. He asked if I was a vegan, what I though about cybernetics and androids, and he said he didn't have a girl friend in 10 years and asked if I had a girl friend......I walked away after that last one.
5. One lady who couldn't stop looking in her lunchbox and fumbling with something, never got a good look but she gave it the strangest stare, probably an addict or something.

Oh and be prepared to come into contact with groups of thugs who think their tough in numbers. Its best to not draw attention to yourself or if your bigger than them you should be fine. Most are cowards.

Oh yes the strange people on the bus... The public transportation is like a mental home on wheels. Usually when I'm on the bus people are usually quiet and just sit there and look miserable. Well actually everybody in Vegas looks miserable.

This reminds of a time I was at the bus transportation depot... I think that's what it was called its like the place where its the end of the line for the bus and you have to hop on another bus if you need to go to another part of town. There was this black guy who was talking to himself he was standing there yelling out stuff like he was getting into a fight with a gangbanger saying all this slang and saying the n-word. He wasn't even talking to anybody really he was just yelling stuff out. He was this bald middle-aged guy and I thought to myself please god tell me he isn't getting on the same bus I am...

Meh thugs aren't that scary you just got to be street smart if one of them notices you're staring at them just nod your head and say whats up, they usually say whats up back and mind their own business. Just don't show any fear around people, predators pick up on fear and it well draw attention to you, its the way of nature. If you remain confident and just mind your own business people aren't really going to bother you.

So you're saying that you literally thought about it and could not think of any resources to use to figure this out? You thought the best course of action was to post in the BGS CD forums to see if any random people on the internet know where to get a bus schedule for your town?

Are you sure your parents will allow you to ride the bus by yourself? :teehee: I have trouble believing that you know how to use an internet forum but you are incapable of using a search engine to find this info.

The buses in san francisco are awesome. For 2.00 you get a seat that mildly smells like urine and get to interact with a color cast of crack heads, drunks, gangsters, vagrants and psychos. You might be lucky enough to see a fight or a robbery. I got really lucky one time and almost got stabbed as i broke up a fight.

A whole new world awaits you in the fantastic realm of public transportation.

LOL That made me laugh its so true...
$2.00! Man it cost $3 bucks to go in 1 direction down the road or 5 bucks for all day pass here in Vegas.

The San Fran buses really don't sound much different than Vegas. Only In Vegas you might get lucky and get to sit next to a meth head who never shuts up and talks non-stop the entire trip and well try to con you into giving them money... And you also get the Vegas VIP treatment from a rude bus driver. And the actual bus stop themselves are really safe because there's no benches at them from drunk drivers crashing into them.

That reminds me of a time I was going to a gas station to buy a pack of smokes which was near a bus stop. I leave the gas station and there was a bunch of cop cars and an ambulence heading towards the bus stop. Then I look over at the bus stop and saw a lovely site of a dead guy and blood all over the side walk. I decided it was best to just leave and pump my gas at another gas station. Great day that was.

I'm so glad I own a car.

I think we've scared the poor kid into riding the bus...

I.... HATE buses.. I have never liked them ever since I was little. The bus driver always missed my stop. It freaked me out and I thought the bus lady did it on purpose at times... I swear she did. Every time I get on a bus now, I can't wait to get off, and I am usually dead quiet when I am on one.
