Post » Wed Oct 13, 2010 9:17 pm

So i think i am gonna buy a Pc or laptop

But i can't choose

Laptop is cheaper than Pc but i am not sure if laptops can play a game like Skyrim it also got a Smaller screen but i don't worry about that just gonna plug a Bigger LCD Monitor on it

or

PC

Pc is Really Expensive and it's better to play games i think so.....
Pc is also for good Perfomance but i am not sure if it's faster
but i am scared i am gonna buy a wrong pc and then it won't play Skyrim so i lose alot of money and maybe i am too late to bring it back

i currently have a Xbox
But the [censored] thing is you probably can't play mods on Xbox or make a mod on Xbox

So someone give me Advice if i should buy a Laptop or Pc !!!

A good gaming PC will almost always be better value than a good gaming laptop.

Only go for a gaming laptop if you need the mobility, as I do with mine.

There are all kinds of laptops and all kinds of desktops.
You get far more bang for your buck with desktops than laptops, you should only get a laptop if you need to move around.

wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut:/facepalm?

Laptops of equal specs are going to be slower and far more expensive than a desktop of equal specs.

1: hardware is downclocked because of massive heat issue's
2: two hardware is for the most part NOT upgradable
3: never buy a laptop for gaming

If you need to BUY a desktop then go with ibuypower/cyberpower pc, honestly though building one is easy.

Q: have you ever played with lego's as a child
IF YES then you are now qualified to build a gaming rig.

what's your total budget?

For around $1000 - $1500, you can either
(a) build a powerful gaming desktop and buy a decent laptop for non-gaming use; or
(b ) buy a gaming laptop

cheaper total price to build gaming desktop + buy non-gaming laptop

but if you need portability there are a number of laptops that can run most recent games at 1920x1080 resolution and get decent frame rates.

check some of the Sager laptops on http://www.xoticpc.com for some ideas

I suggest minimum 1600x900 or 1920x1080 display and absolute minimum laptop card for gaming either 1GB NVIDIA 460M or 1GB AMD 5830M

If your budget is less than $1000, then either stick with a desktop or perhaps consider a used/refurb gaming laptop

I'm pretty happy with the Envy 15, which is running Witcher 2 at 1920x1080 with no problems, but the Envy 15 has been discontinued

Laptop. I have an Acer laptop...and I have not been disappointed. 100x better than my big-box PC. The only thing I hate about my laptop is that when I unplug the charger, it makes this super annoying beeeep. But definitely a laptop.

Laptop only if you care about mobility in your gaming. If you plan on being stationary at your place, desktop hands down.

just about every old PC tower can be fitted with new hardware (start with the motherboard, power source, harddrive, and disc drive), hell i have a 15 year old tower, with 3 year old hardware and software inside that my uncle had put together for me, i dont use it all that much as my laptop has just a year old gaming hardware powering it

Completely wrong.

I have a laptop and I only sit on one place. I have my laptop in my living room--where my TV is. So I get to watch TV AND play Skyrim. Also, what if your house is on fire? Your Skyrim game save is screwed!! Unless you have a laptop.

Who say's I cant play Skyrim while I watch TV? My rig is in the same room as a 70" All depends on where you place your set up.

And let me expand by saying "In my opinion, a laptop only if you care about mobility"

I prefer a desktop for a stationary setting. Reason is, expandability. I can keep the same set up, and expand upon it as I feel is needed. Cooling is a lot better with a desktop as you have a few options for cooling. With a laptop you need to buy a good USB powered cooling unit that your laptop sits on top of, that can dissipate the heat.

Also at your Acer laptop, thats a really good brand for Mobility Gaming/Desktop Replacements. Another brand I can suggest to OP if they look for a laptop, MSi has some decent set ups.

Unless you really have an inescapable need to be able to do "portable computing," PC > Laptop hands down, every time.

In particular running higher-powered "gaming-focused" hardware, where the biggest problem is cooling- an area in which laptops are notoriously lacking.

like about every one else has said go laptop if you are going to be on the move. if you do your gaming at home and dont mind being locked down to one room then go pc. but as was said laptop vs desktop with equal specs the desktop will win out in speed and performance. the biggest issue with laptops is heat. heat = slower system. and laptops are next to impossible to upgrade. with a good desktop though you can up grade it all day long.

if you go desktop i highly recomend spending some time on the net learning how to build one. google and youtube have ALOT of information on how to build one. you'll also come out a little cheaper on a good gaming system building it yourself than by buying it or having another company build it for ya.

Go to a nice local friendly comptuer shop. Not a big wig like Staples or London drugs, go to a locally owned comptuer shop and get it custom built to handle Skyrim's quests. Thats what I did the second time I needed a pc. (dont go to the big wigs becuase they sell you cruddy computers and charge you more money. Spent 1300 dolalrs at staples for a gaming computer, but then got computer custom built 2 months later for only 800 dollars and it was a better pc.

I'm going to be in college, and unfortunately I'm not really in the position to splurge on both a laptop and desktop. My current desktop is a literal Frankencomputer, and it's been upgraded ruthlessly for a good 7 years but at this point it'd just be more cost-effective to buy a new one. I'm a conservative fellow and do most of my note-taking by hand as it is, but I don't think I'd ever bring a desktop with me to a public, state college.

Yeah, I need the mobility, too. That's why I don't buy desktop computers. I'm thinking of buying a new laptop next spring, after TESV has been out for some while.

How many gigs of RAM (and which type of RAM? VRAM? DDRAM? or some new fancy name they just came out with) would I need? How many processors would I need? And how fast would each processor need to be?

The most important thing is the video card and the display. I wouldn't settle for less than 1600x900 or 1920x1080 display for gaming.

And if you really want to get decent frame rates at 1920x1080, you will need at a minimum a laptop video card along the lines of the 1GB NVIDIA 460M or 1GB AMD 5830M.

for RAM, 4GB DDR3 RAM 1333MHz should be enough unless you want to use this laptop for other tasks besides gaming like Photoshop, video editing, etc.

if you can afford sandy bridge i7 quad core, that is the best, but the video card is much more important than the CPU

You are always going to get a better gaming desktop for the price. I say build a gaming desktop, then buy a cheap laptop for portability.
