Buy it on release or not?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:00 pm

I dont know wether to buy this on release or wait a few months then buy it, as it'll take a while before patches are out for, lets face it, a hell load of bugs, and for decent mods to be made or optimised for skyrim. As Oblivion has now been out for 4 years and there's still mods that need improving/new mods being made, etc.

I suppose i could always buy it for console first then get it on pc later.

But what will you do?

I already have it pre ordered :celebration:

Of course at release, I mean, every big game should be bought right from the beginning.
I've pre-ordered it at amazon.de at the first day as I saw it there.
I supose, that I'll disguise myself as an TES-Ork at carneval (11.11.11).

With their current track record only a moron would hand them money at launch.

Then I suppose I'm a moron because I pre-ordered New Vegas on Steam and enjoyed the game immensely despite the glitches which were fortunately very minor and insignificant in my case (things getting stuck in the terrain, etc.).

I've already pre-ordered and will pick-up the game the day it is released.
When it becomes available, I will be upgrading to the CE.

I'm excited about Skyrim, but I'm going to wait a few days at least, possibly a few months.

First, I want to know what kind of DRM the game will have. If it's something insane; like constant Internet tethering, limited installs for a single license, forced registration with an online account for a single player game, etc. I will wait until gamesas/Zenimax removes it (the way they removed the DRM from the GOTY edition of Morrowind) before buying. If that means I have to wait a year or so, so be it. I'm really hoping that's not the case, though. I plan to start modding as soon as I play through the game a bit, and get a feel for the land. If they don't ever remove it, well - I guess I'll just keep modding for Morrowind and forget about Skyrim. I'm patient, but I'm not willing to tolerate DRM that essentially forces me to prove I'm honest every 5 minutes. (or for Ubisoft, continuously)

Second, waiting a few days should be long enough for the worst of the bugs to come out. The ones the devs miss, because they all have the same type of PC's. If the initial bugs are bad enough, I'll wait until the first patch is out that fixes them.

Assuming those two conditions are met, I'll go ahead and pick up the PC version. I probably won't buy the DLC, and instead pick up the GOTY version when it comes out - unless the DLC is very, very compelling. (I'm looking at you, Oblivion horse armor...)

I will be pre-ordering and picking it up the day after. I will be getting it on the Xbox 360, and if the game is not good enough and needs to be modded I will get it on the PC

I'm definitely going to wait. I bought Oblivion on release and it was almost unplayable for me because of the level scaling. A year+ later OOO and similar came around and made the game great.

I see this in the wikipedia entry: "The player levels up by raising skills, and doing so allows for better items to be bought or looted from dungeons; it also increases the strength and variety of wilderness monsters."

Yeah.. definitely giving it a pass.

Learned the hard way with oblivion; wait for mods to fix the game and make it look good then buy game. Till then BF3 and the witcher 2.

+1

Internet-dependent DRM will be a deal breaker for me, too. Anyhow, I plan to wait for at least 3-6 months for a price discount and patches (PC version).

I rarely go to midnight releases due to college and work, but since triple-elevens falls on a Friday, I won't have to worry about classes or work the next day so I can safely go to the midnight release with no regrets. I still haven't decided what I'm getting it on, but if my PC can handle it I'll be getting it on PC for mods and the construction set (I like to do my own bugfixes and other small tweaks).

Wow a lot more console players on this forum than i thought. I voted "consoles on release" but I'm gonna get the PC version too a couple years after when PC's are cheaper and a lot of mods/unoffficial patches have come out.

If there's a midnight on 11.11.11, I will for sure be there considering it's a friday/saturday. I will then procede to return to my room and play it straight say until 11.11.12.
