Buying Land

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:42 pm

Alright so in OB you can buy houses. And its probably safe to assume you will likely be able to here to. But what about buying anything? Like what if you could buy any building then charge rent to the people who live there. Or buy land and lease it to farmers, buy roads and charge a toll, buy stores and run the yourself or hire NPCs to run them and set prices for items. Anyone else think it would be cool if you can obtain any land or property in the game either by buying it or maybe more evil means (like forcing the owner to sign it over to you). And you would have to hire staff and guards to maintain and protect your property which may fall victim to bandits or theives. Also, NPCs can come buy an offer to buy it from you for a hefty price if your buisness is doing well, or the property is in demand.
Anyone else think it would be cool to be able to buy any land or property in the game from the owner? Of course it would be very costly even for small properties in popular cities so its not like you could own a whole town overnight so I think it would be balanced.

Charging tolls would be pretty boring.

I would wanna be able to shape the land myself (like... cutting down trees, growing trees, and so much more). If not, I'd have to pass on buying land. Buying houses would be enough for me then...

You mean something like Fable but changed a little bit. To me making money in oblivion was way too easy and unless they have changed that then I don't wanna see anymore ways of making it.

Buying land and building a custom house would be nice but you would probably have to pay or cut some wood and so forth also if you could build it, it would be through dialog for example: Do you want your house to have windows, Do you want your house to have a basemant (extra cost) etc

While I do think it would be fun, I think all that kind of stuff enters in to a realm of micromanaging that TES just isn't about. I could honestly do most of that in the editor. I do understand though, but where do you stop? If you get too in depth it could turn out bad. If you're really into farmer we could have Harvest Moon: TES on our hands

Tolls was just a random example. But with the crafting system that may be very possible to build custom houses and building. it would be awesome to shape the world within the game.

I think it would have to depend on the map size. Maybe if there were some sort of ranch animal like thing you could breed em, sell em, buy food. ORRRRRRRR you could.......

OWN A STABLE!!!!!!!!!!

Some random person could be generated to buy horse to never be seen again. Something like that

You mean, if owning land makes you money too easy, you wouldn't want it?

But, the key here is, that owning land should be a choice, for those with more aristocratic leanings, like myself. I would love to buy villages, and charge taxes, and defend them every so often, perhaps evem hiring mercenaries or soldiers to guard them.
