Buying Morrowind?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 8:36 pm

My first TES was Skyrim, and ever since I've been in love with the game. It's held my attention like no other game, and introduced me to the amazing world of Roleplaying.
A few months ago, I bought Oblivion, and to me it's just as good as Skyrim, in different areas. It too continues to amaze me.
So now I want to try Morrowind. I've heard good things about the game, but I'll reserve my judgement until I actually have my hands on the game.

So my question is: where's the best place to buy Morrowind? I'm considering buying it from Steam, simply because I won't have to wait for delivery. Are there any problems associated with Morrowind from Steam?

If you don't recommend it, my other option is eBay or something along those lines. How much would you recommend I pay for it online - the PC GOTY edition, that is. I've seen a huge variety of prices, and am somewhat confused.

Thank you :)

I bought mine used from gamestop for 2 euros. And if you started with Skyrim i don't think you will like it a lot. The game is much, much harder, there is no HUD that shows you were to go, you have to follow road signs and ask for directions. It's an hardcoe RPG. It's sooo much better than Skyrim. BUT if you wan't a challenge and you think you are going to like it go ahead and buy it, you won't regret it!
I would buy it from gamestop, game or amazon. There is always Morrowind's at Amazon.

First of all: there seems to be a misconception that Skyrim players = 12 year old CoD addicts. This simply isn't true - I'm by no means a gamer, but that doesn't mean I can't follow directions or read a few signposts.

I don't look for a challenge in TES games - I look for the ability to roleplay. Combat difficulty doesn't bother me, so on that score, I'm sure I'll be fine. From what I've seen in YouTube LP's, the game looks like my cup of tea :)

And here in Australia, we have no 'Gamespot'. Or if we do, we don't have it in my city. So it sounds like amazon might be a good place to check?

Thank you for you help!

I haven't had any problems with the Steam version of Morrowind in the year or so that I've had it.

I didn't say that you were a 12 year old COD player xD
The game is really different and Skyrim compared to it is really really easy and much more casual to my sadness.

Sounds promising! It was absolute torture waiting for Oblivion to be delivered, haha. Thanks!

Edit: I know ;) but others here seem to think so. And while I'm not interested in a Morrowind vs. Skyrim debate, I wouldn't call it 'dumbed down'. Lacking in some areas? Yes. Dumb? No.
At any rate, Morrowind will provide a nice change from the mechanics I'm so used to now.

I just remembered. The Steam version doesn't come with a Construction Set and Bethesda hasn't made it available anywhere. If you don't intend to do any modding, this shouldn't be a problem, but otherwise, go for the hard copy.

personally i'd go for a hard copy, maybe try amazon. If you don't plan on modding heavily then steam should be fine (i only say the steam would be an issue as i've had to reinstall morrowind a few times, and i'd hate to have to redownload it everytime)

i think you can get a paypal with your bank account and just buy the game through your paypal. that might help but it takes time too.

If you haven't seen this already i recommend having a look at the mods listed on the http://www.mwmythicmods.com/realism.htm site as there are all sorts of mods to deepen and enrich the roleplaying experience.

Thanks for your answers, everyone! Sounds like I'll be getting Morrowind from Amazon. While I don't plan on modding, I definitely want the option just in case I decide to. Besides, it's always good to have a hard copy of a game.

Thanks everyone. I'll let you know once I've got it, 'eh?

Look it up on eBay, I got a copy really cheap on there a while back (for the map).

Edit: Just looked it up on Amazon, and really, USE EBAY. It's so much cheaper.

I bought mine off amazon, and it should come in by Tuesday. Personally I like to have non-used hard copies of games. I'll tell you how it looks when I get it.

There's an offer on at Amazon that sounds pretty good to me. I thought about ebay, but I think I'd rather get it from Amazon. I think I'll order it when I get home tonight.

Thanks again everyone, you've been really helpful!

I bought mine off steam about 7 or 8 months ago and haven't had any issues. brilliant game too. I LOVE Skyrim but the things that were removed from Oblivion actually drove me to Morrowind out of desperation (I'd already mauled Oblivion). And out of those three games I think Morrowind is the best all-round experience.

also, in case there was some confusion, you can install mods without the construction set you just can't make them.

happy gaming mate, hope you enjoy it.

Ah, if it's on offer, then that's cool. But I really wouldn't dismiss eBay out of hand - I used to, but as soon as I started, it became my primary outlet for old games. But I was mostly saying that because over here it's £18 on Amazon compared to around a fiver on eBay.

Surely you don't include the Morrowind Patch Project or the Morrowind Code Patch in that? After using them I'd pretty much call them necessary.

No, I mean I don't plan on CREATING mods, which requires the Construction Set (or whatever Morrowind's is called) which isn't included in the Steam GOTY ;) of course I plan to install some mods!

The problem with eBay is that not many people are selling it here in Australia, and the cheapest ones are from the US or UK. And because of that difference, they slap on big postage and handling fees ...

I haven't ordered yet, but will soon. I'm just shopping around first!

Solitudian, if you don't plan on making mods I would just buy the Steam version. The only thing you need the Construction Set for is making mods. You can probably get Morrowind on Steam for the same price (or less) as an online retailer or reseller and have it within minutes. It's what I'd do if I didn't plan to make mods.

Good point. I'd rather have the physical copy, but having the game shipped from America to Australia is expensive. It's basically $20 on Steam or $50 through Amazon or eBay.

Thanks Pseron - and thanks everyone, for that matter. You've all been a huge help!

and the aussie dollar is pretty strong at the moment so you may even get it for slightly less than what it actually is on steam. i only had to pay $19.72 or something lol.
