Buying a new video card. Will it run ESO well ?

Post » Wed Mar 26, 2014 1:57 am

I'm looking to buy this:

ASUS R9270-DC2OC-2GD5 Radeon R9 270 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card.

With my current config:
-HP desktop
-Intel Core2 Quad Q6700 @ 2.66GHz (4CPUs), ~2.7ghz
-6go RAM

The question is do you guys think I'll be able to run ESO on Ultra graphics ? What do you think ?

Thanks for the answers

(I'm also buying a bigger case and a new power supply to fit up this card)

first off Asus has not been very good for a long time, I honestly recommend stay away from anything Asus

Geforce or Evga are much better quality cards and I highly recommend them over anything Asus also wise choice checking to make sure your card is a 256 bit card this is a huge benefit overall, now in regards to running on ultra....your computer is a bit dated you probably could run on ultra for a while but I wouldnt recommend it. the game looks just as beautiful on medium settings as it does on ultra, it is a really beautiful game, with your system I recommend medium settings...

honestly if your buying a larger case and a larger power supply your also going ot need a new processor which means indirectly your going to need a new motherboard as well, so you may as well just build a whole new computer, also dont forget for gaming purposes AMD is as good if not better than Intel and a lot cheaper, Intel comes out ahead when it comes to graphic rendering and graphic design fields, but in gaming both systems are pretty much identical, what this means for you is simple. if you are on a budget you will get WAY more bang for your buck buying AMD rather than Intel since Intel costs a lot more

Somehow hard to trust a guy who calls GeForce manufacturers of cards.

I don't know about that specific version of the R9 270, but any version of it is gonna be able to run TES:O fine. I could run it fine on my GTX770M, and the R9 270 is significantly more powerful than that (I was running 50fps on high). I didn't check if I was CPU or GPU limited, but if the game is CPU heavy then your CPU may be behind.

Thankfully most modern games - Rome 2 Total war is an exception that springs to mind - are more GPU than CPU heavy.

I am sorry not Geforce I meant Gigabyte force of habit, I always buy Geforce video cards meaning Nvidia video cards and I have a habit of mixing the two, yes I meant either Gigabyte or Evga video card....there corrected

yes your CPU is sub par a 2.7 Ghz CPU is pretty old in the way of CPU's I would look at at least a 3.2 or 3.4 GHZ CPU

Geforce doesnt produce cards. Thats why taking advice from you is a bad decision.

Skillastat I run ESO on ultra setting and I even increase the view distance to 100% and I use a AMD Radeon 7700 series and I notice very little pixel lag. I am actually going to upgrade to the R9 270 haha also. Well the one that costs around 200-240 dollars. I imagine with the new card you bought you will get 60-80 fps but not sure.

finish readin the rest of that same post you just quoted I corrected myself and stated GIGABYTE its friggin 6 am get off my

this is a very bad recommendation and only a fool would go by this recommendation, the baseline for most computers BOTH price wise and performance wise is a BARE MINIMUM 3.2 3.4 GHZ processor there is absolutely NO REASON financially or performance wise to buy anything less than this.

a BASIC performance system would be:

a 3.2 GHZ processor

8 gigabytes of ram

a 750 watt power supply

a 1 tb hard drive

a case with a quality airflow

and any video card that is NVidia based since NVidia is currently what most games optimize for FIRST before all others, not to mention the NVIDIA chipset is just superior to other graphic chipsets right now

wether you choose intel or amd as your base build is totally up to you...quite honestly the difference in performance game wise between intel and amd is minimalistic enough to not justify paying the more expensive price of the Intel brand name, yes Intel is superior to AMD but not by much not when it comes to gaming

and as someone said below me on this topic yes a 64 bit operating system is highly recommended as well since a lot of games are actually moving away from 32 bit support now

Just to point out Intel on chip graphics is still crap and the AMD APU stuff is really quite good.

Actually one of the most important things that you must take into account is the screen you are going to use. Mostly 1080p these days on a TV and really the mid range cards will run that just fine.

My GTX 780 will be along soon, I have a new 2560x1600 display to feed. ;)

I have a Gigabyte R9 270X 2GB version. Haven't played ESO with it yet, but it runs BF4 and FFXIV at max settings very well. Could be another story during huge PvP events though. My CPU is new however, you might need to upgrade that as well as others have mentioned.

I'll run ESO on my 32' TV

Yes that's what I'm starting to think, Right now I'm browsing the Motherboards and Processors on the web just to make myself an idea lol

Yes this is exactly what I'm thinking. Although I'm wondering if my new card + my actual CPU specs will run ESO on High/Ultra. I hope hahaha

I'll add and affirm some of the replies here. You need a new PC.

Q6700 is old, and while Ghz is less important these days, it wasn't in the Q6700 days. As minimum get an recent i5.

You don't need a kick-ass machine to play ESO.

Reasonable budget setups & options:

here goes feel free to negative feedback it and pick it apart:

Gigabyte 990 FXA UD5 or UD 7 motherboard about 100 bux

Apevia X dreamer case about 60 bux (Apevia cases are absolutely amazing having an incredible fan system)

Corsair Ram its gone up recently and is kind of expensive make other choices are good as well but my experience is corsair always make sure your ram sticks match both in size and voltage

Geforce 650+ graphics card minimum its a very good price running about 100 bux just make sure whatever card you decide on is a 256 bit card not a 128 bit card

1 TB hard drive with 7200 RPM or fi you want more your better off buying two 1 TB hard drives you can do an internal/external or internal/internal or external/external why? because the 1 TB hard drives tend to be stabler than the 2 and 3 TB hard drives

monitor is totally up to you what size you prefer just make sure its capable of 1080P

Power Supply at least a 750 personally I am a fan of thermaltake power supplies

processor I personally use the phenom II black 965 processor because its an amazingly good processor even though its older, you can also upgrade to a 1080 etc etc just make sure its at LEAST a quad core and 3.2 to 3.4 GHZ

not sure if I left anything out but this entire system will run you about 700 bux start to finish depending on current market prices

BTW i recommend against APU type processors for several reasons which I am not going to go into here

Ahh nice stuff. I need a new graphics card. I decided to buy a 27 inch monitor to get ready for ESO instead haha. Oh well.
