Get at minimum, GOTY. It contains SI, Knights, and is patched already to 1.2.416.
If you want the DLCs. try to find a Knights CD. It has all the DLC's except for Frostcrag (I think).

No, the knights cd has all DLC except battlehorn castle.

It is common knowledge that to get the most out of mods, you will want to have at least SI as a lot of content comes from there. In terms of KOTN and the other DLC, all that you need to be aware of is that the majority of mods that require these are usually just re-vamps of the original DLC, e.g. Frostcrag Reborn is an amazing mod that adds and changes so much of the original DLC, frostrag spire. To answer your question, vanilla means an un-modded and 'pure' oblivion no DLC's or SI.

Quick Tips and pointers:

You will probably want to download some of the more important mods first e.g. the unofficial patches. After that you will want to learn using the common utilities of any modded game (OBSE, OBMM, BOSS, Wrye Bash) next you go mod-hunting, find whatever suits your tastes and wants, one of the best places to look for mods is tesnexus, a website devoted to tes related mods and other stuff.

YOU MUST READ THIS PART!!!

Please, please, please do not download or use a mod without reading the description, comments and readme files (yes all of them!) you have no idea how many questions are asked which could have been answered by these, just read whats written and you will be fine, learning to use mods takes a bit of patience and a lot of common sense, all of what you need to know is already written for you. So have fun :)

And one important note. Do NOT buy the D2D downloadable version. It is incompatible with OBSE, and that way you cut yourself off from 90% of the gameplay changes mods. The version downloadable from Steam is OK though.

I own the original Oblivion/Knights/SI discs, the GOTY discs, and the Steam version - the Steam version is by far the most convenient.

I definitely agree that you should get the GOTY edition. Since it comes fully patched and with SI, you will have no trouble using most mods.

And to save you the trouble later, I will tell you now to install it somewhere outside the Program Files directory so you don't have trouble with UAC, which can prevent you from using mods.

GOTY is the most flexible in terms of later modging. Or get the Steam version, that is the next best thing.

The thing with mods is that eventually you may want to use OBSE functionality (or rather mods you'd like to run require it), and for that only GOTY and Steam works. I have the GOTY edition (2 DVD's). Shot them cheaply on Ebay once. But if I had to do over, I would happily pay the full price for them today, and I like to have the physical discs. It's a great game.

That's definitely not true . . . I had the original release + Shivering Isles (separate purchases), and they worked fine with all mods before I lost one of the discs. Same goes for the Collectors' Edition. I have the GOTY now, and it definitely works well, but it's by no means the only option. The only thing to avoid is the D2D release.

Ok, ok, you are correct. I thought if given the choice of which discs to buy, one would look out for GOTY today. I chose my word badly, sorry.

hehe I did exactly the same thing as you about 2 weeks ago, went from PS3 to PC. Only now getting used to it tbh, it's well worth it. As others have said read the readmes thoroughly, I used the pinned thread in this sub forum about downloading mods to find what I wanted and have already started on a few...

I got goty then downloaded the official plugins, you can get the goty disc for 15 quid if you look and im sure much cheaper if you really scour for it.
