I would get GoTY then you have one of the best expansions in Shivering Isles.

I recommend getting GOTY. It is not that expensive and it comes pre-patched when you install the second disc. And the expansions are just fun to play.

Many mods require SI to work, so I'd go for GOTY, just to be safe.

Not sure if you have a few other Bethesda games already, but there is a Bethesda Pack which includes Oblivion GOTY, FO3 GOTY, and Morrowind GOTY for $70

If you buy the Oblivion GOTY on Steam it is $25

Definitely go with GOTY edition because some cool mods need you to have Shivering Isles installed in order for them to work.

Avoid the Steam version, whatever you buy. It isn't mod-friendly.

I am seconding Fable2's reccomendation about the Steam version - The steam version has a nasty habit of removing patched executables and needs extra steps to run some mods and utilities. The only advantage about a Steam game is not needing a disc to be able to play.

Plenty of good mods that require the expansions and the 1.2 patch, which comes pre installed when you put in the second disk.

The tilde key doesn't work for me, so I use this brilliant mod: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13133

Mods add a lot of replayability to the game, and - if you're into Roleplaying - there are a whole bunch of mods that make the game more immersive and real.
