Can someone tell me why they jacked up the price of Fallout 4 to $80 on Steam for Canadians? At the current exchange rate it's cheaper to buy in USD.

dunno someone in another post said all games in Canada are going up by $10 not just Fallout
More likely they just trying to make you pay more for it, different country, the only ones who won't even get their hands on it is india because of their religion based off of cattle.
This plus I think they added some sort of additional tax on media licenses....don't quote me on it. I bet google knows.
Steam is pretty [censored] with it's conversion rates. For some reason it has believed that $ = Euro for years now. The difference quite large, much larger than just tax.
That's how Steam is. It's a great platform to get discount titles on, cheap gaming for those who wait. But when it comes to buying new games Steam is far from the cheapest.
I got my preorder on a third party reliable webshop. They'll email me the cd-key on release, and instead of paying 60euro's it was just 40 euro's. Saving 33% by browsing a little bit.
I'd suggest you do the same, just browse around.
Just noticed that, eh? I think it went live yesterday.
I think its to do with how the dollar is doing right now, not any kind of new tax or anything. Steam isnt taxed at all. I haven't been in a games store in many years, maybe they're all 80 dollars now, I heard that was the case when lurking Reddit.

$60 USD = $77.14 CAD
Very great math, i think games in general will be 100 dollars, because think of how each president raises minimum wage every year.
You think anyone working on developing Fallout is paid minimum wage?....Hmm..
I mean in Canada, I don't think it's taxed here. I am sure it might be taxed in other places though.
New games are for the most part $79.99 at stores for quite some time now. I think at least a half year or when the year started. Hard to tell on the pricing on the PC since not too many PC games at stores and most of them are older or MMO cards/Steam Cards and such.
I pay taxes on steam purchases using funds in the wallet. I do not use Credit Card only buy the Steam Cards at stores. Maybe it is based on the Province you are living in.
Hrm, guess im getting a good deal on my other Steam games then. I can't actually remember the last time I entered a EB games or similar, so thanks for the info.
My google-fu is strong unlike the Canadian dollar.
The Canadian dollar was around 70% of the USD until the 2008 recession which Canada managed to get through really well since resource industries don't go out of style quite that hard. It wasn't so much that Canada was stronger, it was that America was weaker. Now that the economy is back on its feet and we're experiencing the low oil prices its a bit different, but it was the absolute norm in terms of CAD/USD before 2008.
Should go into a book store in the southern bits of Canada and see if any of the books have prices in both CAD and USD, with USD being $5 and CAD being a horrendous $15
I remember hitting port in Nova Scotia back in the early 2000s and tipping the black jack dealer ten USD for a couple good hands and he was very grateful hahahahah. Seems the good old days are back again.
Well currently the Canadian dollar is really poor so that's why our prices are much higher. Currently $80CDN is $62.30USD and if it was $70CDN (which luckily I preordered two days ago from steam), would come out to $54.48USD so bethesda would be losing a little bit of money. It comes down to the market is all it is really, if our dollar would be higher, then our games even after being converted to USD would be much cheaper than someone in the USA that would be buying it.
So the extra fee is for removing the maple syrup? And translation. I kid.
Honestly, I'd love for one of these publishers to come out and say exactly why they have the difference in price. That way folks could just point back at it.
Steam only started pricing in CAD very recently, when the dollar started to go back to its old state. I don't know if those two facts are related in some way, but previously id have prices displayed in USD and since the CAD was actually worth more most of the time it was effectively the same price. I don't know if it was treating my CAD the same as USD or what was going on.
Why is this not being asked on Valve's site? I doubt Bethesda has much pull on dictating pricing policy on Steam.
No, it was charging you in USD, and you were paying whatever conversion rate your credit card gave you.
OP should have pre-ordered earlier, when it was $69.99 CAD (that's what I paid).
If the cost is really a factor, buy it from Green Man Gaming and apply the discount code from the front page of the site to your purchase, you'll save 20% or more depending on the discount offered at the time. Just be careful to take the conversion into account, since the prices are listed in US dollars.
Actually, the publisher sets the regional prices, not Steam.
