Is Caesar gay?

Post » Sat Aug 06, 2011 3:56 am

Not a joke topic or attempt at trolling. Homosixuality is quite prominent in New Vegas; two of your companions (Arcade and Veronica) are openly gay and a third (Cass) is Bi. There's even a homosixual prosttute and a perk which highly suggests the player character is...well...a confirmed bachelor.

But on to Caesar.

Evidence for:
- You'd expect a wasteland leader of his stature and morality to have assembled a harem. Eulogy Jones, the leader of the slavers in Fallout 3, has two female six slaves. Even The King has his groupies. Yet what do you find in Caesar's tent? Nothing but men.
- The historical Caesar had certain rumours abounding about his sixuality, his political enemies stating that he had a relationship with the King of Nicomedia and his engineer. While unfounded, it's something for Edward Sallow to relate to in the great man if he himself is homosixual.
- His relationship with Arcade if the latter is sold out by The Courier. Caesar is said to have been 'fond' of him, and even mourned him for months. Human life means little to Caesar - yet the death of Arcade moves him. Mourning the loss of an intellectual sparring partner, or something more?
- There is no mention at all, even by Joshua Graham when asked of early days, of any kind of female romantic interest.

Evidence against:
- No Confirmed Bachelor dialogue. Then again, The Courier may not be Caesar's type.
- The lack of interest in women does not necessarily mean he is homosixuality. For all we know, he has a wife like the historical Caesar or be asixual.
- Homosixuality is punishable by death in the Legion, according to the aforementioned prosttute.

For me it's...inconclusive. Why does it matter? It doesn't really, but Caesar is an interesting character. I think it's probably that he's intended to be asixual, his only passion being for power.

Definitely food for though. Though, it doesn't matter for me either way. I've always found Ceaser interesting, though so... meh.

Meh, homosixual or not, he's still gonna die every time I replay the game.

Still, even though he (obviously) based his legion on ancient Rome, it seems a bit weird that he dresses the men in tunics or 'man skirts' and all the women are covered up like a 5 year old going out to play in the snow.

Skirts are great for maximum mobility. They look pretty too.

Caesar is not gay. He views women as lower class then Slaves... If Caesar were to take a "Wife" it would have to be someone VERY High Ranking in another Tribe/Military. I think Caesar has more to worry about then some "vag" he could sleep with any women he wanted to in the Legion with no questions asked... why worry about a "ball and chain" when any thing you wanted could just take a snap of your fingers.

Though I think Cass and Caesar would make an adorable couple. :hubbahubba:

Lol, you may have a point, but it really doesn't have to do with anything game wise, for all we know Caesar may never share his love life with anyone and we will never know, or maybe he had a wife and she died, then he was so depressed he vowed never to love anyone again. But there is no information or confirmation on this either so its all speculation.

Irrelevant.

Caesar is clearly no hedonist. Not that having six makes one a hedonist, if that was the case there would be little who weren't, but it seems obvious Caesar values his campaign in the Mojave over all else.

Also, people say Caesar is misogynistic. I don't think this is necessarily true. In the Ancient Roman military, women were not allowed to enlist. They were treated as equals for the most part, outside war camps. In New Vegas all we see of the Legion is... war camps. I don't agree with holding women in a lower regard to men in any scenario, but the Legion concentrates heavily on melee warfare. Now, if I was in charge I would happily draft women into my army, but I see why Caesar does not.

In any case, it is not specified because it does not matter. He might of shaves his legs, too. Obsidian felt no need to divulge whether he did or not.

There is not much evidence to prove that he is gay or not.

He is on a war campaign and would not really have time for a harem. He can have his pick of any slaves if he wants and we know the legion does take advantage of female slaves.

Julius Caesar used the rumors about his relations with Nicomedes to his advantage. Maybe Caesar does the same but then again there is no proof that he has relations with men.

I don't know. That bit about Arcade is in your favor, though. But I do see a reason he could have for outlawing homosixuality even if he himself is.

Consider this: Their society, at least their war camps, see women as completely insignificant. There are few if any around, and they don't belong there. One could suppose being with a woman is thus frowned upon in this situation, cutting out most six for heterosixuals. This, however, would leave homosixuals still able to focus on six and relationships instead of the war, so why not just outlaw it as a capital crime? Then nobody is having six for the most part (they're still probably jerking it though, unless that's also outlawed? Not like they have much privacy to do it, and if they get caught they might charge them with being homosixual for doing it in another man's presence). Much of that built-up tension and aggression because of this is let out on the battlefield, making fierce if sometimes cruel and unfocused warriors.

I don't know that I'd call homosixuality prominent in New Vegas, though. It just wasn't ignored like most forms of media ignore it. (I'm just arguing semantics here, though.)

The bit about Arcade dying, you have to realize Arcade would be refreshing for him. This is the only intellectual person he can have a discussion with. If he dies, then that's that, and Caesar probably knows that and that's why he's upset.

Plus, I could be wrong, but I believe Josh Sawyer once said that Arcade's style of suicide and the events surrounding it are an actual reference to one of the real Caesar's aids.

Yes he's gay, all the Legion are gay. Well actually they're Bi. The romans are famous for takin it both ways so why would he be any different. God help the slaves.

Actually, homosixuality between advlts and women of any age was frowned upon in ancient Rome. For them, the only acceptable non-heterosixual relationship was between an advlt male and a young boy. This was more than a simple sixual relationship, as the advlt male was expected to be a sort of mentor, and was also expected to engage in heterosixual activities with his wife.

As for manner of dress, historically speaking those societies that have placed more restrictions on the rights of women have also required more concealing clothing. Think about some middle-east countries that run themselves based on a strict (and usually extreme) interpretation of the Koran. Women in those countries often have very little in the way of rights, and are expected to wear clothing that conceals their entire body. Also, as someone else mentioned, skirts are better for mobility. The Legion is sacrificing greater protection for greater speed and mobility.

It was more like "They mount each other as often as the women"

I don't believe there is any menton of Legion members having wives or daughters for that matter. The only role we see women play within the Legion is as a slave.

I believe it was similar to the way Cato died, he disemboweled himself. Cato was fighting a losing war against Caesar, and I believe Caesar grieved his death regardless.

Well, that's just a guess.

I think its too much of a distraction or something for him. If you notice NOONE in the Legion has a relationship with another women.

And just because he valued Arcade as a person doesn't really mean hes gay at all...

I would think that Caesar would want a son to take over his legion when he dies, no? It's very odd to me that he does not have a wife.

I'm currently playing a second character as a female, when I got to The Fort, the one slave woman you can talk to (forget her name) mentions in dialogue that some of the soldiers have been saying that they can't wait to try you out.

Caesar has no such inclinations toward you. I'm just sayin.

He could just be too old. He's probably in his 60's, which is on the upper end of life expectancy in the wasteland. All that radiation couldn't have helped.

As for a son to inherit the throne. It is possible that Caesar has an heir but has chosen to hide him to prevent assassination attempts.

His sixuality seems pretty undetermined to me. I figure he doesn't have a harem because like others said, he's on a war campaign. The reason there aren't many women seen at fortification hill is because its a war camp on the front lines. I'm sure back in arizona women are quite plentiful. The legion doesn't see women as totally worthless, but when compared to today's USA society one could draw that conclusion. Caesar still sees women as valuable, they are for breeding and hard manual labor to him, he even uses a few as extensions of his frumentarii as made evident by a vulpes quest.

and in summation, he's 60 and has a brain tumor or something. If he can still get it up I think it might cause him to stroke off and die. It is obvious he is aware he has a medical problem, and he has vast medical knowledge from his time in the followers, I'm pretty confident he's got his own suspicions about the nature of his health problem.
