Cafepress

A close friend of mine has a birthday coming up, and I've been looking to get him something a bit different from the usual giftcards and things that are usually given for birthdays. I've been looking at this site http://www.cafepress.com.au/, and been considering using this site to custom-make him a gaming shirt (he's a big fan of anything Valve and loves anything like that). However I have some worries about the site itself. I've seen a few dodgy reviews of it online, but as with anything on the internet, I am taking them with a grain of salt.

Has anyone used the Cafepress site before that can give me some opinions and experiences?

In my experiences, Cafepress will not let you use any copyrighted material. I don't know if they have changed that rule or not, the last time I used it was a year ago.

I now use http://www.vistaprint.com/custom-tshirts.aspx?&GP=5%2f3%2f2011+9%3a45%3a46+PM&GPS=1538917954&GNF=1&GPLSID= to make custom shirts, but they can be rather limiting in the area where you can customize the shirt. (usually just a box in the middle)

DIY!

Take a regular toque (or other hat, whatever). Go to a hardware store and buy yourself a nice red faucet (y'know, like the http://cdn.venturebeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/valve_head_home.gif) and bash at it until the knob is the only thing that remains. Then, attach the knob to the back of the toque - this will likely require some sort of backing on the inside of the toque. Voila - your friend can be a Valve-head.

I looked through the TOS on the site and this is what I found:

Examples of Prohibited Content

In accordance with intellectual property laws, CafePress has certain rules regarding the types of merchandise that you can make and sell through its service. For example:

NO UNOFFICIAL MERCHANDISE, such as professional sports teams, videogame or Olympics merchandise.
NO use of names, logos, pictures or other intellectual property of musical groups or musical artists. For example, you cannot make Britney Spears merchandise simply because you run a fan-based Britney Spears website or just because you downloaded her image from an internet website. You also cannot modify the name or other intellectual property of a musical group and avoid infringement, (e.g., using Metalika instead of Metallica).
NO use of names, logos, pictures, or other intellectual property of sports teams, colleges/universities, clubs, or organizations such as the Los Angeles Lakers, Harvard University, or The Boy Scouts. Modifications may not avoid infringement.
NO photos, logos, caricatures, or other artwork depicting celebrities, such as Michael Jackson or Madonna, or other third parties. Just because you take a photograph of a celebrity does not give you the right to use that photograph on merchandise, even if you digitally manipulate the photograph. Political figures are permissible because there is an exception to the general rule for political figures.
NO use of trademarks, names, or logos of companies. For example, you cannot use the name of a company such as Nike or company logo such as the Nike "swoosh" trademark.
NO pictures or photographs of products (such as toys). Even if you own a product, trademark laws may still prohibit you from selling merchandise that features pictures of it. For example, you cannot take a picture of your Barbie and sell Barbie merchandise with that picture.

It seems that the rules remain the same then.

Seems as though that copyright thing goes largly ignored on there though. I found http://www.cafepress.com.au/+dark_elf_large_poster,2949297 little treasure on there. Also, every second item on there seems to use some sort of copyrighted image.

 I did this when people say they buy gift cards for people as gifts. Good you don't want to do that. I find gift cards so impersonal.

How about going into the malls? Some places to customized shirts, so cant you try that?
