I was walking with my Mage, enjoying a brisk bought of snow and wind as I left Winterhold and noticed that it was the Morndas in the month of Heartfire. The RPer in me got curious and so I went and got the wiki with the information on the calendar. Imagine my supirse when I saw one that mirrored our calendar of today.
We are on a different planet, with a different orbit and our calendars match?
Took me about 5 minutes to come up with an nice fantasy calendar that could be plugged in and makes more sense based on the physcials of this world as we know them. I took some creative lisence here and if the info I used violates some part of the lore we do not know forgive me.
The year for the people of Tamriel is begun with an eclipse when can be set like clock work in stone for timing. This event occurs once a "year" when Secunda eclipses Masser in such a way that the reflection from the sun creates a very distinctive halo effect. The effect gave the illusion to early people on Tamriel of Masser giving birth to Secunda and thus a new year is born.
The year is divided into 4 distinctive seaons and for our pruposes we will call them by modern names here; Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. That by the way is the order they take place with the new year being the traditional first day of of fall being the beginning of the year. From this solar event forward into the year the temperatures begin a steady cooling.
The month system is created around the phases of the two moons which takes about 37 days to complete. The period of fall, a gradual cooling of the air takes place over 4 lunar cycles, hence 4 months. Spirng like Fallis along a 4 lunar cycle period with Summer and Winter, the extremes of the heat and cold cycles being only 3 lunar cycles each.
This works out to a 14 month year with 518 days. This creates an alien feel to us as the world is obviously not earth. The physics of this can be done by creating a larger orbital pattern around a hotter star.
The system I used for this BTW is very similiar in concept to the system used my our own planet. The original calendars were based on easy to observe and regularly reoccuring events, usually cycles of the moon.
Now as I said the above took me about 5 minutes to put together with limited knowledge of the world. I am curious why the devs did not put this kind of effort into something like this when so many other areas of the game show an effort. BTW if the folks at Bethesda would like to use this material feel free as long as proper credit is given.
Just thought this would be a neat topic for discussion
