.50 Caliber Hunting rifle needs a buff

Post » Sat Feb 27, 2016 7:19 pm

Since we are talking a lot about weapons,

it reminded me this thing I always wondered.

Why is .50 Caliber Hunting Rifle so weak?

The damage of this weapon is only slightly higher than combat rifle, but it comes with tons of inferiority in all other aspects.

Furthermore, this weapon is way weaker than .44 revolver.

Personally, I can find no reason to use .50 caliber over .308 combat rifle in FO4.

...I really hope Bethesda makes this weapon stronger if they really do listen to what we say here.

It has the best sound effect among all FO4 guns !

It really should deal near double damage it does now considering all the crap we have to deal with using hunting rifle.

Slow reload, hard aim...

The worst part is it has highest noise generated even when using suppressor.

Haha, thank you.

If I could use mod, I would be interested in only 3 mods.

1. Makes .50 hunting rifle better

2. Turn Dogmeat into white shepherd

3. Remove wrinkles on SS face :P

For something so loud, it seems to lack power. My shotgun is stronger, and after seeing what a real 50 cal can do, I know that shouldn't be the case.

It really used to be my favorite weapon in FNV.

In FO4.. I gotta lower the difficulty to normal in order to make .50 sniper rifle feels like what it is...

..and I use Instigating hunting rifle... which is still underwhelming.

Yeah, the .50 is a very underwhelming rifle, considering how good it should be.

I agree, the anti-material rifle was awesome. I have also lowered the difficulty for the same reason, especially when head shoting a gunner private leaves then with a sliver of health left. Very annoying.

I'm running this mod for that very reason - http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/5855/?tab=4&&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Ffallout4%2Fajax%2Fcomments%2F%3Fmod_id%3D5855%26page%3D1%26sort%3DDESC%26pid%3D0%26thread_id%3D3547575&pUp=1

It bumps the damage up a bit, but not so much that it's overpowered. Like others, I was incredibly disappointed by the damage increase from the .50 receiver swap. It should have been quite a bit more than it is. With Rifleman and Bloody Mess and such maxed out, it's delivering around 250 damage. I feel like this is a whole lot more realistic.

Tell me a story...

I was quite a gun fanatic in my youth... as much as it is possible in Germany.

Then i had to make my duty in our "Army".

I was just a communications maintanance boy... but since i was stationed at "Heeresamt" (army headquarters), i was able to try out various weapons. HK G3, P1, light Panzerfaust, Grenades, MG1, UZI... even got my hands on a G11 (didn't shoot it sadly)

But since i fired my first shot with the G3 my view on weapons changed.

The brute force behind it made me think "this doesen't ever has to go into civilian hands". Shooting the MG1 didn't change this view ;)

So... if i had the chance to shoot an .50 AMR, i would maybe completely devatated.

It was enough for me when my instructor asked me if i could hit this mudhole 3 meters away with a handgrenade (ducking behind sandsack barricade).... and of course i did. gave me hours of cleaning my equipment after this mudshower...

Thanks for that, I'm going to add that mod to my game. The .50 mod is really underwhelming. I never even bother to use my sniper rifle now--my .308 combat rifle is better in every way.

If FO4 would resemble my shooting skills back then... i should stick to easy mode ;)

UZI with large mag was the only thing i might get a lucky full hit on 20m.

Edit:

While i was able to do single shots with the MG1 (which is a task in itself) .. i didn't hit anything ;)

No problem. There are several similar mods on there that accomplish basically the same thing. I don't know how they compare to this one, but I've been running it damn near since the game launched and I've had no issues with it. Like it even says in the description, there are pistols in the game that deliver more damage than the .50 hunting rifle, and that doesn't really make sense.

I've also got a mod to swap the meshes of the recon scope with the normal scope. I prefer the reticle of the recon scope and like the targeting pips that it has, but I don't like walking around with a scope that looks like a portable rifle-mounted TV. With these two mods, I'm pretty content with my .50 sniper rifle. I'm pretty content with the damage of the rest of the weapons for the most part, so I really didn't want to install a mod to rebalance all of the weapons. This was plenty for me.

I don't know what perks or stats eventually do what but right now my .50 cal sniper rifle does 160 damage.. the 308 version does 137. Seems like the .50 should be pushed to about 240 so it's half of the Gauss rifle.. which for me does 480.. The Gauss rifle is the gun to go for if you want to feel overpowered. With stealth, ninja and mister sandman you can take out anything in one shot with the gauss rifle as long as you aren't seen. You can pretty much take out any human target with the .50 as long as you are in stealth also.

needs some punch to match that sweet bang!

IRL, as Jollyfingers noted about his experience, in my experience. Barrett .50 cal will raise dust and dirt off the ground about 2 feet around shooter when shot! The 50 in FO4 looks so much like it, we need the damage!!

For me the whole sniper weapons part is disappointing. The .50 cal is just silly if it is suppose to be the powerfull .50 cal bmg round. All of the sniper rifles have too much sway even with perks and stablilizing armor. Also the 1st sniper perk that provides added stability was bugged for me as it was only temporary.

The only sniper i now use , as soon as i can get one, is the 5.56 assualt rifle or instigating version. Equiped with low power scope it offers the least sway, recoil, largest magazine, and best fire rate. The low power scope offers better use at mid range while still working well on longer targets. Overall i would rather have scopes that zoom instead of 3 fixed powered scopes.

I voted yes, but I also switched to a 6-Crank Laser Musket for my sniper recently and couldn't be more content!

The anti-materiel rifle was a similiar offender IMO, though.

I always used the Scoped Hunting Rifle with crafted .308ers over it. It was way lighter, quicker and its inherent enhanced critical hit chance (remember how awesome that was, anyone) dealt some damage versus high level enemies - as opposed to the AMR, which was kind of a let down, especially in the ridiculous DLC...

I voted yes to this. I was extremely underwhelmed with the damage dealt by the .50 Cal Hunting/Sniper rifle, especially given the noise it makes.

Many thanks for pointing that mod out, just installed it and very much looking forward to using my .50 Cal sniper rifle again.

From the very first time a added a scope to a hunting rifle I wondered why on earth they didn't include variable zoom scopes. I spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out whether there was a key you had to hold, or if there was a specific weapon mod or perk, just to be able to zoom...but, for some reason there are only fixed zoom scopes.

Does anyone know if there's a mod currently out for variable zoom scopes? Couldn't find anything on the Nexus.

I renamed my 308 combat rifle as M-14 cause I like it so much.

I feel sniping in FO4 on Very Hard or Survival to be very unsatisfying as everything is just a major bullet sponge. The 2mm EC isn't too bad for sniping though. (If you're like me playing on an XBox or PS).

The only time I use my .50 Cal Hunting rifle is when I'm low on other ammo. It should be at least as strong as the fulling modified .44 Revolver, if not alittle better.

Agreed, I've seen what the Barrett M82 is capable of. Its not pretty( punched through a concrete wall & exploded a watermelon ) the .50 caliber hunting rifle in FO 4 feels like it fires nerf darts.

When I found a .50 caliber rifle in the game I thought, 'aw yeah," but then I shot the thing and was the weakest rifle in the game. The .50 caliber rifle was great in NV. Why is it so lousy in Fallout 4?

Whats worse is what the ammo weight might be like for it. Not seen a single .50 cal weapon I'd want to use. But to be honest .5mm also suffers from a lack of good weapons.

I'm really curious what the "No" argument is for this. I personally am all for it. I think bolt action weapons could use a speed boost along side being made quicker to fire with the rapid reload perk.
