So called "Epic battle"?

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 9:49 pm

So... you're complaining that a guy dies quickly when you're power gaming? Really? With that set up, I'd be more worried about him not dying quickly.

My power gaming gave me the ability to survive the Courier's Mile of Hell on Very Hard. I died many times though. That was a real test right there.

Wrong. The npc's weapons and armor are in poor to moderate condition, most of them dont use the most powerful ammo types and none of them have as many perks as you do if at all, so playing on very hard compensates for it. Ulysses has 2 perks - Finesse and Toughness and if you have one of the level 50 perks, his Finesse perk cant affect you at all. I can kill Ulysses with 2-3 shots on normal. This CANNOT be as powerful as the devs intended him to be.

Hate to point out the painfully obvious, but it's the apocalyptic US out there in the Mojave Wasteland, so the fact that you're the hero of the story is what gives you more perks and better equipment than everyone else. Most NPCs, including Ulysses, aren't going on epic quests and loading up on one-size-kills-all ammo and super buff armor and such. That's the expected state of the world. Don't let your phat loot greed twist your perception. Devs call it normal because it's intended to be normal. Just because you want it to be http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NintendoHard, doesn't mean everyone else does.

If that's true then Fallout New Vegas is the easiest game of all time. There are plenty of merchants who can repair equipment to 100% condition. The only reason their equipment isnt in good shape is because the devs didnt want the player to have such an easy time getting rich. And according to Ulysses, he did go on plenty of epic quests.

So you want Fallout to be a cakewalk? You dont like to feel rewarded for accomplishing anything? [censored] that..

He said it's what the Devs set it at, not necessarily that he wants it that way, although his posts do seem to indicate such.

If I want insane combat, I'll fire up Diablo II and play one of my 'gimpy' builds on Hell difficulty; it'll take forever to clear just one map sector and boss fights will be a grind and a half, but then I expect that in such a game. On the other hand, I do not expect that in F:NV, nor do I want it there; I play F:NV for the fun of being able to mess around with multiple character builds, since I don't have to squeeze out every last drop of efficiency in order to be successful.

Oh, and btw, Very Hard doesn't actually make the game any more difficult, it just makes it more annoying; your damage is cut in half while theirs is doubled, which effectively turns every opponent into a bullet-sink boss fight. Not the right way to go about it IMO.

Never fought him always convinced him to fight the marked men horde. He is more helpful after finishing LR cause he can teach you things and gives items to you ( not the footlocker that has the good stuff in it i mean the crap he picks up from the ground and hands to you)

Not really, on every other difficulty you dish out a lot more damage than your enemies so it actually gets close to evening it out.

And do you know how much punishment your character can take? They can take a lot more than most other NPCs in the game, that's called having no gameplay balance.

Sorry not that computer literate to know how to post a link on a forum. However i can tell you how. You can pass a speech check of 90 but after that do not choose any answer that indicates deception or he will attack you. There is one more way find all his holotape messages there are 6, Then tell him you listened to them all, However you must actually listen to them not just collect them. Because you need the information on his history in order to answer the questions he asks, once again be nice with your answers or he will attack you. If you succeed he will join you for the battle but you have no control on his actions, you can still nuke anyone you want as well.

Oh, I wasn't disputing any of that, since I can't.

My point was more that drastic-damage-alterations-as-difficulty-enhancement never works out as intended, since pretty much all it does is force you to waste massive amounts of ammo. If it weren't a blanket increase but instead tied to the 'rank' of the individuals I'd find it more palatable, since that would prevent the ever-annoying scenario of turning 'trash' mobs into Demigods of Death?, something that has been a problem (at least in some opinions, one of which happens to be mine) in RPGs played at hard(er) settings since Day 1.

.....I don't play games for a sense of accomplishment. I play games to have fun. For me in Fallout, that is about becoming a story, dreaming up a character, and ultimately finishing the game, putting the character to rest.

When I want to feel a sense of accomplishment, I go to Chemistry class and not strangle my teacher. Or I kiss a girl. Or make someone smile.

To me, VH/H is just simply not necessary. Reloading 45 times isn't fun. I don't want to have to squeeze every little drop of efficiency out of my character-my first NV playthrough took 10 minutes to deal with Legate Lanius and all his guards.

I play on Normal, and Ulysses is freaking tough, and I had PA and the CZ57. Ulysses and the marked can and will kill you, Normal or whatever.

.......Quartermaster Bardon, the Great Khan Armorer, and Vendertron sell them in rather significant quantities. Alternatively, you can convert Missiles to Rockets at a 1 > 2 ratio.

And can I just wonder at the point of your question? Ulysses doesn't provide Rockets one way or another, as far as I know.

He also leaves that recipe in the footlocker if you don't spare him.

Ditto on everything you said. Just replace Chemistry with Biology, girl with boy, and smile with laugh.

I find the weird sense of borderline-arrogant superiority some guys have, for a video game of all things, both baffling and amusing.

And what the heck are you hitting him with that's killing him in 2-3 shots? Man has around a thousand hit points, for crying out loud!

GRA AMR fully modded + explosive ammo + sneak attack headshot = one-hit kill.

Fully modded sniper rifle + .308 JSP + queueing sneak attack headshots in VATS = 3-hit kill.

Agreed.

Intentionally making games challenging allegedly because it's more fun but in reality to have the right to brag about it is quite stupid IMO. I understand bragging about your achievements in a MMORPG, but in a single player game where nobody can really see or prove your achievements, it falls to deaf ears and in vain.

I use a lot of dirty methods if I just feel it makes my game more enjoyable, and this includes things like reloading if companion dies, setting important people essential, and spawning ammunition with console if I don't bother returning to base to fetch more.

P.S. Biology rocks! Signed, future virologist :)

If you're going to kill him: Play the game on very hard. I assure you he has a nice arsenal of stealth boys, flashbangs, grenades, as well as eyebots attacking you from all angles. Not to mention he's carrying 2 of the most powerful guns in the game. The 12.7mm SMG and the Anti-Materiel Rifle (Barrett .50 Cal)

I don't know why people kill him though. I find the play through way more satisfying when I talk him out of following through with his plan.
