Can't access cell

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 4:00 am

I'm sure I could keep searching the forums and find the answer but the 300 second search buffer makes that impractical.

I created my first map using the official GECK tutorials. I tried to use the coc console command to access my map but it doesn't do anything. the coc command works but not with my cell.

The editor id is Vault74a
I've tried:
coc Vault74a
coc Vault74
coc Vault74a * (as it shows up in the cell view window)

I'm lost. What am I doing wrong?

It should work, though to be on the safe side you could always add a coc marker.

Daft question but did you activate your plug-in in the data files section of the game launcher?

Not a daft questions since I'm failing at such a simple thing (I'm about ready to smash my face into the wall).

I did load it though. How can you tell if its loaded correctly?

And I added a COC Marker...is it possible that the marker is placed badly and is disallowing the command?

Well, if you go to data files in the launcher it should pop up a box with the Fallout3.esm, any dlcs you have and any plug-ins that are available.

As long as the box next to the name of your plug-in is ticked it should be working.

Without knowing where you placed the coc marker I couldn't say but I don't think that will be the problem.

Which version of Windows do you have?

I don't know if this is the cause of the problem but suspect it might be.

Make sure to set GECK to run as administrator. Load the GECK up and your mod and resave. (This is assuming the plug-in isn't showing in the data files.)

Unfortunately I have already told it to always run as administrator as well as allowed all types of access to the data folder. This is starting to make me despair...I do appreciate the help though.

Are you sure the ID is Vault74a and not the name of the cell? One is the ID, one is the name displayed to the player. Otherwise it should be working. You know it loads the esp correctly if the game doesn't CTD when you open it, and your typing the coc command in correctly. I would say somewhere you missnamed your cell or something.

Well, I renamed both the id and the name to "crapmap"...no luck.

I'm so lost here. Has no one every encountered this problem before? It doesn't even give me an error, it just does nothing.

Edit: I just want to say that I really appreciate the help I've already received. At least I know that I'm doing those steps properly. Thank you.

Well if you named it the right thing, your typing it in properly, and you are loading your mod when you open the game, then I do not see why it would not be working. I don't know what else would be stopping it from functions as those are all the things that usually cause it. I will keep thinking of what it could be.

OK now I'm really confused. I've gone over the tutorial 3 times and then I realized that they provide a download example file. I thought maybe I was just having troubles loading mods in general...but no the one make by Bethesda works perfectly. So I must have messed up a step. But according to you guys (and presumably the tutorial) I have not.

Ok lets go through it again. Just to make sure you are doing this right. I will use the Editor ID Vault74a in the below examples.

1. The cells editor ID is Vault74a? This is the FIRST line in the Cell View window. Its also in the column that says Editor ID. Not to be confused with Name, the second column.

2. Your .esp file is checked in the Data section of the Fallout launcher that pops up before opening the game?

3. You open the console with ` and type Coc Vault74a exactly as I have there?

4. Having a coc marker in the cell should not matter, it simply tells it where to put you, otherwise its in the center of the cell, which isnt always the best spot for testing. But place one in anyway. The objects is CocMarkerHeading.

If you have done the first three then it should work. Especially if it works for other cells, and the bethesda plugin...

Thank you so much for your help! I completed that checklist you gave me but it didn't fix the problem. I decided to start all over...again. To my knowledge I did nothing differently the 3rd time around...but now it works.

I can't even begin to imagine what was going wrong. I'll chalk it up to my own ineptitude. Thanks once again, I'm sure it was as frustrating trying to help me as it was to need the help.

No problem. I find it odd that it did not work till the third time, dispite you doing the same things. But, sometimes things in the geck just don't work. I have had NPC packages, places items, doors and such that randomly just do not work, until you delete and replace them. So maybe that just happened to your whole cell... twice... for some reason. Anyway, glad you fixed it. Have fun modding. :D
