Can any devs tell me if an ATI 6850 graphics card will be go

Post » Tue Feb 22, 2011 3:20 am

I intend to finally upgrade my ages old graphics card very soon to a 6850 and was wondering how well you would think it could probably run Skyrim? Will I be getting 30 FPS at least with max settings? I'm guessing not but just wondering.

No dev is going to tell you that. You'll have to wait til just before release to find out what they recommend, and even then you wont know how many frames per second you will get.

It should have no problems running Skyrim I'd expect.

That card can run Crysis at "Very High" at 30fps with no AA.

I'm sure you'll be fine if you ease off on the anti-aliasing side.

Heh. If they start answering that kind of question, even before the specs are out, such a pandora's box for them...

You can run it, just not as smooth as you wanted.

Well, considering I can run any game on max settings with my HD5850, I will bet that yes, you certainly will be able to run Skyrim at max settings comfortably.

You better run two of them in crossfire if you want full draw distance.

Whether you're joking or not, a powerful CPU and RAM is more important with large games like the Elder Scrolls.

The 5850 is actually faster than the 6850.

How so? I used to think that the newer cards ran better than the older ones, even though it's just one 'generation' newer (with the same ending - 850).

wait for the 7xxx, then still get the 6850 because of a likely drop in price, as that card will still be viable to play most games on high settings until late 2013, at the earlyist.

Seeing the next graphic jump in games will be happening only when the next gen consoles come out. which is currently widely speculated to be about then. By then you'd want to upgrade regardless if you bought a 6xxx or 7xxx. Basically I see no reason to go further than a 6870 for nearly the next 2 1/2 years.

because the numbering sneakily changed. the 68xx series is the next up equivalent to the 57xx series. Oddly the 68xx series is not supposed to compete with the 58xx.

The only way that wouldnt run it is if flaming pigs flew out of my [censored] singing bavarian opera... and that hardly ever happens.

I may as well ask about my graphics card too. How do you think the Sapphire HD 5770 will do? I'm pretty sure that it'll do just fine on max setting, but I'm not 100%. Thanks.

No dev will tell you at this time. Given that the game will run on an x-box though, I somehow doubt that you'll have anything to worry about.

My dual Radeon HD 4870's (2 GB video RAM total) run all the games I have at max settings with AA cranked up to 8X and 1920 x 1080 resolution. This includes:

-Medal of Honor Limited Edition (that MoH game that came out in 2010)
-FO3 and FO:NV
-Dragon Age: Origins
-Crysis
-Oblivion
-Morrowind with max settings using MGE

I know that none of these games are the most gaphics-intensive, though. Does anyone know of a game that can test my system's graphics cards to the max? MoH seems the most graphics intensive of them all, but the linear environments might make things a bit too easy for my cards.

So, if my 4870's can do this, your 6850 should do just fine. Note, however, that I don't look at my framerate. All I care is that I get smooth movement with limited or no stuttering. Also note that I've very happy I went with the dual card option, because the 5870 wasn't out when I bought my rig, and one 4870 would already feel old by now :P.

I would hold off, there is no point getting a GPU now for Skyrim. I would wait for the HD78xx or until the HD6950 drops to something you can afford.

I have a HD4850 512 MB and I expect that to run Skyrim alright even.
