Can anyone explain this? Job question.

Post » Sun Mar 22, 2015 12:08 pm

I just recently applied for a job advertised on a website for a local (currently unbuilt) convenience store and It stated that there were 8 vacancies.

I applied one day after it was posted and it was removed the next day. Any reason why they would remove it so soon? Are they just going to process the applications they received in the 3 days and re-advertise again if necessary?

It closed Friday, should I expect a call sometime this week? I'm guessing they won't call on weekends.

Yeah, they'll take the ad down as soon as they think they have enough candidates to choose from: it's likely that the number of applications they have to wade through is quite substantial after three days.

Hopefully you'll hear from them, though the time-scale can typically be random and a lot of prospective employers also don't bother to contact the people they decided not to employ. Good luck, hopefully your application is near the top of the pile and they like the look of it!

Thank you, I suppose they've got plenty of time seeing as the place isn't built.

Upon review of my resume, it's come to my attention that my email is incorrect... Ugh. I'll be on the nearest train tracks.

Well i'ts possible that the ad was placed mistakenly. It can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months to build a store so it's possible they realized all the applicants replying would most likley not be available upon completion of the new building.

I'd estimate it's about 2 months from completion.

I don't know what the job situation in Australia is like, but here in the US, they probably would have gotten several hundred applications in those three days, so they would have decided they already had enough candidates to look over to decide who gets called for an interview. They almost certainly won't call you over a weekend, and if they decide other candidates would be a better fit for the openings, it's likely you won't hear anything back from them at all.

If they don't choose you, you may get a form e-mail from a do-not-reply address stating they have decided they will not move forward with you and wishing you "good luck with with your career search" or some other such pablum, which, speaking for myself, grates to no end, kind of like a cop telling you have a nice day after writing you a ticket for a couple of hundred dollars. At least here in the US, the system for jobs like these is set up to make it as difficult as possible to follow up with a person who can actually make a decision about who will be hired, at least until someone picks you for an interview.

My advice - keep looking for other opportunities, apply for anything you can find that you think you can do and pays you what you need. If you haven't heard anything from these people in a couple of weeks or so, I'd say it's safe to assume you won't, and of course you won't be getting the job. Keep as many irons in the fire as you can manage, and try not to get too discouraged when people don't even bother to call you back. This last is much more easily said than done, however.

If you can figure out who you need to contact, you can always let them know (and perhaps ask about the status of things while you're at it).

Tasmania has a population of five hundred thousand or so, and half of them live in Hobart (5c3j9r7Productions not being one of those, as I recall). The island is 26,410 square miles. Although the sate does have chronic employment problems, I don't think there'd be ginormous numbers of applicants (though I'm sure there were plenty).

To add to this, a lot of these companies have "career portals" where you apply for jobs, and these often require you to set up a user profile before you can complete the application. If you can log in to your profile you may be able to edit your e-mail address to correct it.

Ah well that's different then. You threw me when you said "unbuilt" when it probably would have been better described as "unfinished".

Unfortunately this job didn't require a profile. I've emailed the person with the email on my resume to tell them to pass on anything they may receive.
