Because no other game has them?
Hard to implement properly?
They just don't like spears?
Just to piss you off?
Spears are overrated?
Because casual players hate spears?
Because of consoles?
Because they're superfluous?
...

1: Morrowind, mount and blade

2: no not really see morrowind and mount and blade

3: why they are an amazing weapon

4: probably trolling the core users

5: no they arent

6: probably

8: most likely

9: not really

Spears if done right (see Mount and Blade) are amazing at what they do;

1: if we had mounted combat Spear/pike=win
2: if we had npcs who knew how to fight instead of charge charge charge then spears are a great support weapon, because if the enemy is a bit far off for your sword bro then you poke him with your spear making him close in to attack you thats when your sword bro comes in.
3: great in hallways trying to keep enemies off of you
4: would be perfect vs dragons and other large beasts

Also with spears you also have halberbs, pikes, awlpikes, and poleaxes ect ect ect ect.

If I had to guess it's because it's a whole set of animations for one class of weapons. Seems like a waste of time.

They could just be out of place in Skyrim lore though I'm not sure.

I wonder if we'll see any two handed weapon like a Halberd? Since it's used in the same downward swinging motion as most two handed weapons.

Oh spear, wherefore art thou.

I don't think that that word means what you think it means....

On topic: I'm kind of disappointed by the lack of spears, but also there's a bunch of other things in Skyrim I'm excited about that make up for it.

Halberds poke as well they also hook and do a lot of other things.

Spears can do more than poke btw, awl pikes=uber spear.

The safe bet is that they could not add spears and still do everything else they want to do. Developing spears would cut from developing something else.

I don't think it's as much of an issue of animations because ES does not through anything out because they're lazy or it's too difficult. I think it's just because spears don't feel right in first person or third person combat. The proper way to fight with a spear is to stand on the outside and jab with it; very defensive and strategic. However, this just doesn't promote the kind of intense and epic close combat encounters that they're going for.

I'd love to have a one-handed spear with a shield.

Spears are not cost effective. The labor spent didnt justify the predicted extra appeal, so it wasnt worth it... my guess.
