I can't believe how good Oblivion is.

Skyrim is a new member of the family. I found Oblivion first and love it. I tried to play Morrowind and so far haven't gotten very far through it but only because the tech is older. I'm closing in on the MQ of Skyrim (not doing the civil war yet) and I'm having a blast. I keep saying that because it's true. If someone were to ask me about which was my favorite, I couldn't choose between Oblivion and Skyrim and won't. It's like a new member of the family and how could I love one less? They're different from each other and that's good. I don't need the same game twice. I'm going to keep that POV because it makes me happy and the more people who join in, the better. After all, it's about fun, pleasure, the joy of gaming. There's plenty of room for Fallout too. :tes:
This is one of the best posts I have seen :D, It's so true that every game is different, but this is good as it adds diversity. This is why I love every elder scrolls game I have played (although I obviously like certain ones more than others), and fallout should definitely be included! It makes a change from the fantasy setting of the elder scrolls to a post apocalyptic wasteland.

I feel that Oblivions main quest line is rather weak. I dont like it at all. Which is why in the six years ive been playing it, ive only beat it once... Other than that... its too good lol... its raises the bar... every game I play ends up in me saying "cant compare to the fun I had playing Oblivion"

Yep, the whole shift in mentality towards Oblivion has now taught me never to take this, whatever it's called... "hate on the new game" syndrome seriously.

Oblivion was the disgrace to the series before Skyrim, now it's changed to a well made TES game that Skyrim doesn't match up to. Gotta love teh haterz...

lolwut? Oblivion was a lot better than most of the TES games

Heh, I'm level 57 right now and haven't started the main quest in Skyrim right now. Explains how I feel about it after doin' it once.

Am I the only one who imagined the Guilds' questlines as movies?
To my mind, the entire game is a movie. I see the quests as the developers way of taking you by the hand and dragging you (sometimes kicking and screaming) around to all of the incredible content they have packed into the game.

Angel only does quests on a whim and finds some too repulsive once the plot is revealed, to complete them. She would never kill her Unicorn. Sarrah detested Modryn Oreyn of the Fighters Guild because of his disrespectful demeanor. For that reason alone she walked out one day in the middle of their conversation and never finished the Fighters Guild quests. She would rather have killed him than help him.

I agree. I've always thought of the Elder Scrolls' main quests as a form of guided tour. The main quests are Bethesda's way of introducing us to the game world, the story and some of the characters we can meet in this new game they've created.

I think some new players to the series do not understand what Bethesda has been trying to do with their main quests. Coming to the series from more conventional or traditional games, they think the main quest is the game. And they are liable to get upset because Bethesda's main quests do not conform to the pattern established by main quests in other games. These are the players who talk about "beating" a game. The series can frustrate these types of players because they fail to realize one important point: when they play an Elder Scrolls game they are not playing a conventional video game.

I just dare you to say that over in the Morrowind section. They will eat your organs raw.

I love Oblivion, I like it more than Skyrim, however, I think Skyrim's main quest was better than Oblivion's. But! Oblivion's guild quests blew Skyrim's out of the water and sent them to the moon! Oblivion also had a nicer looking environment and I enjoyed exploring more in Oblivion than Skyrim.

My thought exactly when new members come here and post things like "helllp me 2 find this and that and wat do i do noww plz help lol!"
The Elder Scrolls is not Halo, CS or CoD. These kids must learn that if they are to enjoy these masterpieces. Masterpieces not without flaws mind you, but that is what makes them perfect

I laughed when after a few days that Skyrim came out there were several "I beat the game!" threads, which I though "Beat....a TES game?...I'm sorry good sir/madam, But I now question your intelligence."

I remember when I saw a few of those I felt obliged to post, "You don't finish Skyrim, Skyrim finishes you" responses. There were soon too many though. I've heard people call Skyrim 'old news' already. I'm not done with Oblivion yet, I won't be done with Skyrim until at least 2018, if it keeps me as griped as Oblivion!

I don′t get that, but as stated those gamers are mainstream gamers who are not familiar with TES series. But to call Skyrim old a few short months after its release is plain stupid, sorry for being straight forward with my opinion.

Nothing to be sorry about with that opinion; I wholeheartedly agree. I've still got a LOT left to do in Oblivion, including finishing 3 mods I've promised people

Comments like that one just go to show how difficult it is to maintain players' attention these days. At the risk of sounding like an old fogey, I don't remember people talking like that back in the days of the (S)NES and 3/486 PCs.

Must be why the "Morroblivion" project was so popular for a while. Morrowind's story in Oblivion's (or Skyrim's) engine would be magnificent. For that matter, I wouldn't mind an updated version of Daggerfall or even Arena - I've never played either of them.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I am NOT a supporter of the "Morroblivion" project, due to its clear copyright infringement. I'd only support such a project if it were from gamesas.

I made a similar, yet a bit different comparison.

TES games are sisters. They have the same parents, creators, background etc, but they are also unique and very different from each other. Skyrim is the beautiful and ambitious sister. Oblivion is the funny and social sister. Morrowind is the weird spiritual psychic sister. Now, if you're a family member, you can't pick your favourite and you're supposed to love them all equally, but if you're say a guy, you fall in love with one and only one of the sisters, you do have your one favourite TES, the one you love, and the rest you accept and respect and love as sisters of your one special beloved TES game.

And if you're the guy who's fallen for one sister, it's not nice to bash another guy for falling for another sister. To each their own.

I sort of got bored of Skyrim after a month of playing. I can't actually start the game now without feeling the compelling urge to yawn and exit. Must've played it too intensely at the beginning.

Oblivion's just nicer.

And if you're the guy who's fallen for one sister, it's not nice to bash another guy for falling for another sister. To each their own.

Looking at it from this perspective, I would say Oblivion is the sister who (at first meet) comes across much more friendly and open. I'm dazzled by her outfits and her demeanor. :twirl: I feel more comfortable with her at first, as she sometimes bends over backwards to show off her hospitality. As I get to know her more deeply though, she starts to annoy me. I still love her company, but there are things that irk me, to the point I have to iggy her for a while. But I can't just forget her. Eventually, I figure out a way we can both communicate and exist, so that I can enjoy her company more thoroughly again. Now that we're friends, she and I will never part.

Skyrim is the sister who's not so accommodating at first. She's louder and grabs my attention (or else) at first meet, and she makes no apologies about this. But not long after that first meet, I start to learn she's got a softer side. It takes awhile to notice this side of her, but once I do see it, I'm just as enamored by her presence as the Cyrodiilic sister. She doesn't always wear pretty outfits, doesn't always speak in a gay, colorful tone. Her demeanor can be harsh sometimes, but if you spend enough time with her, you may start to see she can be just as magnificent as her sister. She just doesn't always show this magnificence as overtly.

This is a really wonderful anology. I wish I had written this post. What you say expresses how I feel about the two games perfectly.

Sweet! :highfive: I'd say you can probably make your own anology, though. You're good with words, and your perspective is usually much different than those of others.

EDit: Plus, you can include earlier games than I can. I can only compare Oblivion and Skyrim as sisters. I'd love to hear how Daggerfall and Morrowind also fit in.

Me neither. No one I knew said that Super Mario Bros 1 was old when SMB3 was out. In fact, I′ve never heard anyone ever talk about how old any of these games are, not even today! :P

How well does Oblivion run on it? ;)

I've got an Amiga 1000. Bought it in 1985. It was my fourth computer, but the oldest one I still have. As of last year, it was still working. :)

Well, if I want to do something in the game I have to press the button on the keyboard and wait for about three months before I see the result. Bullet-time has a new meaning to me...

My 386 is still working too, although Tabworks isn′t functional anymore and the power button is stuck, fortunately in "on" mode ;)

Sorry, this is waaaaaaaay off topic :P

The problem is, there are a lot of people who believe one game is the best in the series by fact and will make snide one liners like "Morrowind was a joy, Oblivion was turd." which creates rage.

It's pretty fun to see Oblivion bigged up a lot now that Skyrim is the new kid. I see a lot of "Oblivion was more in depth" comments that make me smile.

Just hold out Skyrim... in 5 years time it will be your turn to be the in depth RPG and TESVI to be the mainstream, dumbed down, first person shooter, shallow, poor, generic and boring game.
