Can Beta only be installed on C drive?

Post » Wed Mar 12, 2014 7:20 am

I moved a copy from C drive on one comp to my game drive (D) on this one and it didn't work; tried to red/l the whole thing like it couldn't read it.

I know some programs won't work if you don't install them to the drive the OS is on. Is this the case with ESO Beta?

I'm going to do another complete transfer tomorrow evening but if that doesn't work I'll have to repartition so it'll fit on C. :/

I installed mine on my D drive since that's where all my games go.

It doesn't need to be downloaded to C Drive, I guess any drive would do.

Hhmm...I'd be more inclined to believe that ESO doesn't care what drive it's installed on but rather it doesn't take kindly to simply being copied somewhere else. Not all games like it when you just decide to move them. They might rely on registry entries which don't get updated or copied over with the game files.

I have it installed on D drive so it definitely does not require C.

However i installed it there, not moved from a computer where it was originally installed on C. I think there is a path written in some configuration file that points to the original C install location, and thats why it doesn't work.

I don't know of any program that doesn't work if it's not installed on C, There might be some, but I haven't encountered them in the last 15 years.

I have games installed on G, H and O. some games aren't graceful when you change drives after install, worst case you uninstall, reinstall. Not ideal if you download it, but do it before bed.

By design I install as little as possible on C, that way if I want to format re-install or in my case, Dual boot, I don't have to keep re-installing. I install all my games to a dedicated gaming drive, in this case a SSD (G :). When the SSD gets full, I move older games to my old games drive, which is O: and run them from there if I still want to play

E drive for me. The only issues I have ever had was getting Steam to play nice with games on E drive.

Do you have Steam installed on another drive? There are different little programs you can use to move your current game to SSD and it will adjust Steam settings to play nice with it. I haven't had to use them in a while, so can't say how well it works. I have Steam installed to my O drive and that's where I keep most of the games.

It can be installed on any drive you want as long as there is space for it.

I'm assuming you installed to C: and then Cut/Pasted it to a different drive. This will not work as the internal registry entries that are created upon installing are still "pointing" to its original location on your C: drive. You need to uninstall the game and reinstall it where you want it to be stored.

(You don't necessarily have to reinstall, but I don't have time right now to explain RegEdit)

Is there a way to force a data verification?

I installed the game and then moved all the folders over with flashdrives but it didn't recognize them and wanted to DL everything again.

Perhaps my error was overwriting the entire folder, when I should have just overwritten only the files.

Thanks, I have it worked out, but is the only issue I have ever had with multiple drives.

I've messed with RegEdit a little... I think I'll starting looking at the entries now to try and identify the culprits.

On second thought...

If I've installed the client to E drive on this puter, and then transfer files from up-to-date install, it should work... unless additional reg entries are created when the game patches. Is that likely?

Nuts.

What error(s) are you getting?

There is a folder in your Documents that ESO uses...make sure that goes over to your new drive too.

No error perse, just acts like it's a fresh client install and needs to DL 22g of data. It just doesn't recognize the updated files.

That's odd, I just copied my ESO install from Drive O to Drive G and then renamed my old ESO install to Bob. I then went to the G drive, ran the exectuable and everything started up and took me to the login prompt. Since we're not live, I can't really say if it works, but it doesn't appear to be complaining at the launcher

Are you moving 1 computer to another or just 1 drive to another ?

I had the following same issue as the OP in this linked thread, my responses explain the error message launcher gave me.

Hoping to get stuff to work now, just got my beta mail

One drive to another.

Last time I had to use 5 flashdrives to get the 20some gig worth of files over, but there's a 32g at the post office for tomorrows try. Hopefully that will work better. Perhaps I pooched something in the move... we'll see.

This is the part that is confusing me. Why are you using flash drives to move the game from one Hard drive to another hard drive in the same PC?

Just as a test, I copied my ESO files from PC A's G drive to PC B's K drive. I went to the launcher folder, ran the EXE and it popped up and ran the launcher, I clicked Play and took me to the login screen after playing the little company videos. Since it was the first time running on it on that PC, it prompted me for the Brightness settings and to sign the EULA.

Unless running the game is going to be different I don't think you need to run the installer at all. Again, won't know for sure until the beta starts on Friday.

I ran the Repair utility and that fixed the issue. :D
