Can we block with a sword and torch?

Post » Thu Oct 06, 2011 3:05 am

So I heard you cant duel wield block but I was wondering if it was because you cant block with one handed weapons or is it just for duel wield? Blocking with a sword while carrying a torch is imperative because some dungeons are so dark I needed a torch for my warrior character in Oblivion. But I also needed to defend myself too. It would be a shame if I cant block because I dont think I'll even use a one handed weapon. By the way you cant carry a shield and torch simultaneously so please dont mention use a shield.

Evidently yes, but somehow we mysteriously lose the ability to block with out right hands in the event the torch is replaced with another weapon. =/

There's a *leaked video floating around which shows the player blocking, one handed, with a one handed axe in their right hand just like in Oblivion and the Fallouts.

*Can't/won't link it, but it's @2:02 while fighting a bandit with a mohawk

I don't have Twitter so I don't have the links, but Pete Hines has said multiple times on there that we can block with two-handed weapons and one-handed weapons when the left hand is empty.

I don't know why you're posting your name after each post. It's confusing me and making me scared on my insidey parts.

You can block with a 1 handed weapon in your right hand with nothing in your left, with a torch, and with a 2 handed weapon. Lots of possibilities.

I don't think you can block with a torch in your left hand. I think the explanation is that unless you have a shield, you need to use both hands on a 1h weapon to make your grip strong enough to block an incoming blow. Therefore you can only block if you have 1h+ weapon + shield, 1h weapon + empty off-hand, or 2h weapon.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. The reason I think that explanation is the case is that the animation for blocking with a 1h weapon and empty off-hand has the PC grabbing the 1h weapon's grip with both hands.

Dang, that svcks but its more realistic when you put it that way, I'm glad they put that extra animation to help the explanation on why its that way.

It's been said previously torches are exceptions, wether this is still in I don't 'no', you can block, bash and powerattack(set ppl alight apparently) with them, it's probably to make them useful other wise a light staff or spell or potion would just be so much better. Plus there was apic in ps mag I think that shows a guy blocking with a one handed sword with both hands, showing you must have both hands free to block with a one handed weapon just as if it was a two handed, which makes sence. The torch can't be equipt with a sheild so I assume they play more like on hence you can't duel sheild either, so IMO from what I've read yes you can block with a torch.

It's confirmed. LT blocks with torch and LT+RT does a torch bash. Same controls as having a shield in left hand. Same controls for 2 handed weapon block/bash.
