Can codec packs cause CTD's?

Like the title asks, can installed codec packs cause CTD's? I thought I read somewhere that they can.

Yes, at least some of the functions in them can.

You can tell packs like K-lite to ignore Oblivion.exe and it fixes the problem.

I thought I read that somewhere. I use Shark007's Windows 7 codecs. I wonder if I can tell that to ignore Oblivion? Time to fire up the tweaking tool.

Two questions.

First, how do you identify which codec packs (if any) you have installed? IS tht dxdiag report it? if so then what part of the report?

Next how do you tell them to ignore oblivion.exe?

thanks

Well you should know if you installed a codec pack. If you didn't, then you have Mocrosift's codecs installed only. You can tell through WMP. Help -> About Windows Media Player -> Technical Support Information. If you use Shark007's codecs, then you can tell through the configuration tool.

And as far as I can tell, Shark007's codec pack can't be told to ignore files.

I think it wasn't the codecs themselves...maybe.

I think it might have been Haali's Media splitter or something like that that had to be turned off. In the case of K-Lite, an icon for it would pop up in the system tray when it was interfering with Oblivion.

Hmm...Haali you say...

EDIT:

Figured out how to disable codecs with Windows 7 Codec pack. Well, I was told how to. Apparently you need to disable FFDshow.

EDIT2:

Oblivion is already disabled.

Malonn-

Thanks I looked at WMP tech support and got this list:

ACM Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (decode only) 0055 l3codeca.acm 1.9.0.401
ACM Microsoft PCM Converter 0001

But I'm really not that edumacated about audio codecs - I know I've had issues with better music system though and want to get on top of this.

This list gave me no options for having anything ignore anything. What configuration tool?

thanks

Is this APPCRASH because of a codec problem? I copied and pasted into google, and some of the results seemed to point to that being the cause.... I'd really like some help here. I have no idea about codecs, I have never had to even think about them before. Or a sound card for that matter.... :cold: I didn't even see this thread BTW, when I just posted a thread regarding basically the same thing.... Sorry.

Oblivion doesn't have problems with K-Lite codec pack and not with FFDShow or Halli's Media Splitter and it is either something else that causes problems for people or the way people have it configured. I have used either K-Lite codec pack or CCCP off an on for years now and have never had any problems with either. I am currently using K-Lite codec pack mega and when I install I only choose FFDShow for the ones that don't have other selections and I use Halli's Media Splitter.

It doesn't look like you have any codec packs installed. Looks like the default Microsoft codecs. Am I right? The ignore stuff applies to FFDshow. You can configure it to ignore certain exe's, but Oblivion is already added. I went ahead and added OBSE loader too, but I'm sure it doesn't make a difference.
