Can containers still get over-filled and lose items?

Post » Sun Oct 10, 2010 9:59 pm

Hi, I'm coming back to play Oblivion, I last played around early 2007, then I fell into the icy clutches of WoW :) Thanks to the GOTY edition going up on Steam for bringing me back!

When I played back in 2006-2007, there was a bug/issue where you could add enough items to any container such that eventually, I don't know if the trigger was number of items or total weight of them, items would disappear from the container. Does anyone know if that issue ever got fixed? By the way, I have the GotY Deluxe edition installed, along with all four of the 'unofficial' patches:

  • Unofficial Oblivion Patch
  • Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch
  • Unofficial Official Mods Patch
  • Unofficial Oblivion Patch Supplemental

Thanks!

I do know that many containers respawn, so they're not safe for storage!

I am sure that the one at Weynon Priory is safe and has no limit. I had a really mufumba of all sort of items stored in there, and they never disappeared.

The wiki might shed some Greater Sunbeam on the issue:

I know items could become invisible from the list if filled with to many different items. This also applies to your inventory, mostly if it gets filled up with scrolls and keys.
Items are not lost just don’t show up and removing other items will bring them back then you reopen the container / inventory.
Here it’s the numbers of lines, not weight or total number who is the issue.

That issue was never fixed. It cannot be fixed by mods (unofficial patches) since it seems to be in the game engine. Only Bethesda can fix it, and they are no longer patching the game.

The bug is triggered by having items in a container that are repaired to over 100 health (usually 125% health). And then it is not predictable. I've had huge numbers of items in a container with none at over 100% repair and never had a problem -- I use a container for Alchemy Equipment and large numbers of ingredients with no problems.

Even if the items disappear, it's not game breaking. The "Take All" button will retrieve all items, even the ones that disappear. Then you can just replace the ones you didn't want to take, and hope the bug doesn't occur again. That could be tedious but it's a way around the bug.

Thanks Zaria for your reply about the length of the displayed list of items, I do vaguely remember that now.

And super-thanks to Savlian for your info and the workaround! It's great timing as my character just hit Expert Armorer last night. I think I'll just ignore the issue for now and use your suggestion of the "Take All" button if I ever notice it occurring.

Thanks to all again for your time! This was probably my biggest fear about getting back into the game, losing my precious hard-won items!

Lol, sorry to scare you! This is just what I used to call my Necromancer in Diablo II, it seems fitting for an evil character who worships death. No animals harmed in real life, I promise!

Edit: Except my cat, who was grievously harmed last night by my coming home from work and playing Oblivion for 9 hours straight and ignoring her pleas for attention :) Must work on sharing time between The Precioussss and petting the kitty...

The "container limit" only affected whether everything would display in the container's inventory. Nothing was ever lost, but you might have to remove some stuff before you could see the rest.

It's nothing to do with the repaired quality of items in a container.
It's everything to do with the total weight of the items in a container, and in this instance even the PC is regarded as a container that can be impacted by this coding fault. It's easiest to trip early in the game, by the necessity of having to be in god mode to carry everything you acquire dungeon diving and exploring, in order to buy your first house and furnish it, just so you can have safe storage for your acquisitions.
Wether or not there will be a fan made game engine fix project as is being done for Morrowind, that's anyone's guess.

OT has you played Overlord 2, you got an evil looking mace and you can club seal cubs with it for profit. Yes it's far faster to get your demons to do it for you but you have the option.

Hmm, I seem to recall it happening when I played before with containers in which I'd store lots of heavy armor, so that makes sense. I guess I don't need to keep 50 sets of steel/dwarven armor around for a rainy day :)

Another way to avoid that happening is by categorizing items into different containers and not filling them up too much. Some buyable homes, like the one in anvil, have plenty of storage in the basemant.
