Can we discuss the combat armor?

Post » Tue Feb 09, 2016 7:12 am

Seriously. You can tell the combat armor throughout the history of fallout has never been designed by anyone who actual had to wear armor in combat.

No one wants groin protection, shoulder protection, elbow protection or stuff strapped to our legs.

It svcks. Having to wear a drop leg holster was bad enough and knee pads were just....ugh......

The only armor combat armor that actually looked to be designed by someone who has had to wear armor was the NCR Ranger armor(with the duster).

Seriously, why haven't we seen a simple, well designed laser proof plate carrier and helmet. No one wants plates strapped to their arms and legs hindering dexterity. Something that actually looks designed for you know....war...because war never changes.

And don't get me started on lack of magazine pouches most combat armor in the series has put as an after thought.

Yeah, I don't use it anymore.

I wear a magic hat and magic coat in my battles because they look much more stylish.

Early game Combat armor looks fine, but heavy combat armor is horrid. I only keep an arm because it looks cool having one big arm, kinda like a gauntlet.

It's not so much looks as its more soldiers wouldn't wear it.

You won't get soldiers to wear arm and leg guards that strap down the entirety of the limbs.

I hated knee pads before I retired, no way would I wear anything outside of a plate carrier and helmet.

My point was why is combat armor overly bulky in ways no real soldier would want it.

The NCR Ranger armor is the only combat armor I've seen done right.

Blue jeans, duster, and a solid plate carrier for vital organ protection and state of the art helmet. That is how a soldiers armor should be. Only thing it was missing was a proper chest rig for magazines and other items.

I'm going to disagree with you on the kneepads. I'm not going to claim I was ever a high-speed operator, but I've done some tactical exercises, and dropping to a knee on concrete (even just hard ground) is no treat. I could see why the D-boys wear them.

I don't care what armors look like, I'll wear what makes me look the most fashionable. I will literally die in the name of fashion.

I think half the reasons why people side against the BoS is just to steal that sweet coat Maxson wears. Every armors and clothings look ugly as hell. The mods did make it all better though, despite being glitchy as hell. Raider armors and clothings are the worst.

We have pants with pockets in the knee for cushion pads now. Still hated knee pads, may have been a necessity but it doesn't mean they don't svck.

After the [omitted in the name of no spoilers] battle I looted a [faction omitted in the name of no spoilers] Mark IV ballistic weave coat and said to heck with better stats, I'm tired of looking like a walking junk heap.

Agree OP. I, nor any soldier I ever served with wears anything other than a chest rig/plate carrier and helmet. Cover the vitals, limit the weight, move the f--- out. I despise the combat armor as much as most ballistic weaponry. Strapping anything to your legs is a virtual guarantee it'll be around your ankles after you run two blocks. Knee pockets are the answer for the knees.

Don't worry though, there will be quality mods. TGs Armor and Joos Armory were two fantastic mods for NV...even if they really didn't need much help there. FO4 needs a lot of help.

Oh...and I 100% agree with you on the Ranger Combat Armor. Effective AND fashionable! LOL. I am stunned Bethesda rejected virtually everything from the predecessor FO game...and man does it show.

Cue: mandatory fan commentary on how we can't expect realism in a game with ghouls and super mutants; and that NV was made by Obsidian.

tbh I loved Reilly Rangers combat armor it was awesome. Wish we had that type of combat armor again instead of different pieces but oh well. I'd much prefer that chest piece if nothing else.

Do keep in mind that in the Fallout universe you have to worry about some things that you wouldn't in RL. Energy weapons, for example.

Yes, however soldiers wouldn't be different.

Armor is no good if it hinders your dexterity and slows you down to the point of not being able to bound to cover.

Also if the elastic is tight enough to hold the armor up during a long run it will be to tight and cause sores on the skin where it sits.

If it isn't right enough it'll fall down by the time you make it around the corner.

Even with energy rifles as a soldiers would still generally only have a helmet and plate carrier of some sort, with some sort of webbing to hold grenades, magazines or whatever they use as ammo, and como.

Soldiers use cover, limbs are generally one of the statistically less likely parts of the human body to receive damage. Generally limb damage comes from explosives of some sort.

Also with lasers being a main weapon, it would be possible to develop a weave to put into a soldiers BDUs to reduce the damage a laser could do to limbs without having to use bulky, over encumbering armor that makes you more likely to be shot than to actually protect you.

Back in my day, armour was a WW2 designed helmet and a flak jacket, if you were lucky. When I switched to explosives/bomb tech, I chose not to wear the full body trauma suit...no use trying to do precision work in a sumo suit.

The combat armour svcks badly, no question.

Can't really say that i relate to any of these complaints, but then again i am invested in the Fallout universe as something other than a realism simulator. I mean we got freaking Iron Man Suits in this game.

Great responses here folks! Refreshing to finally read some common sense on these threads.

I have just equipped some combat armor on Cait and could not believe just how ridiculous the leg parts looked on her. Nobody in their right mind would design armor pieces in that design for a war situation. I am currently working fast on upgrading the said skill to fix the look with something that works. Leather might not have the same bonuses but it looks much better.

BMX for handicapped. That is not politically correct these days but still made me smile.
