I Can't equip bows in the right hand? Why?

Post » Sat Sep 24, 2011 7:58 pm

Greetings to all and hope you are all well, ^_^

I recently saw a picture of Skyrim with a character wielding a blue ethereal looking bow, perhaps a conjured bow? About to own a bear in the face and I thought "That looks pretty awesome". I then had this idea as my first character i'd play as a Dark Elf that uses this type of weaponry and if i could ( which i can't, doesn't matter ) name and create this class of character ( like you could do in Oblivion ) I would call this class: "Ethereal Elven (Warrior)" or Hunter, Mage, Thief etc.. Anyway what seems to be bothering me about this whole concept of mine is that I saw this post from Pete Hines.

"DCDeacon Pete Hines
@outerheaven313 You can put weapons or magic in either hand. You can only equip shields and torches in your left hand. Bows as well."

Is Pete Hines implying that you can't equip a bow in your right hand? Or is he perhaps referring back to his previous statement as if he forgot to mention bows? If he is saying you cannot equip a bow in your right hand I say, why? why can't i do that? I'am a right handed person and having a bow in my left hand and drawing with my right seems unnatural and uncomfortable to me. This would result braking a slight immersion in the game for me, playing around with bows seems like a fun idea to me, and i hope i will be able to use bows the way I want. If it's going to be like this i'll hardly enjoy using them, and after all this is a and I quote "Be what you want, do what you want" game, isn't it? But at the end of the day i suppose it's up to the Bethesda team to decide so I guess i'll just have to go with the flow and whatever is decided in the end product i will endure. I appreciate the great amount of time and energy Bethesda has put into making this game aswell as the series, and fortunate enough to even see such a game being created, especially since Bethesda Game Studios almost went down the drain, saved by Morrowind all those years back. I couldn't imagine a world today never playing or experiencing a game like Morrowind. ^_^

it would be nice if I could get a confirmation on this whether it's correct I can't equip a bow in my right hand, and possibly an explanation why
None the less it will be a great game and I look forward to the many years of adventures I will certainly have like I did in Morrowind, I've played Morrowind for 9 years on and off ever since it's release in 2002 :D
Does anyone have any thoughts on this perhaps? Anyway, thank you for reading have a nice day, ciao! :)

Most right handed people draw the string with their right hand.

Have you ever shot a bow? If you're right-handed, you draw with your right.

And we all know that left-handed people aren't really human.

If that's true, I wish I was left-handed. :P

In all seriousness though, that tweet is kinda confusing.

I've done a bit of archery, and bows can take a lot of muscle to draw back, so the natural way to do it is to hold it in your 'off hand' and draw the string with your dominant hand.

It really is just you.

Your drawing strength comes from the arm pulling the string, not the one holding the bow. If you were using a compound bow you may not have noticed the difference, but if you ever had to shoot a straight bow, you'd probably have to use your right hand to draw.

Not sure why they did this (probably just so you couldn't use two bows at once, or two shields at once?) Seems like they could have just coded something along the lines of "when bow equipped { abletoequipbow_shield_torch = 0 }" but obviously that wasn't an option :\

I am a righty, and I planned on my roles being righties, but it might have been fun to role a Link type character. Anyways, we can't lol. Sorry :\

Ah i see, well I do work out a lot going to the gym doing weights training, by doing weights eventually both your arms will equally balance your strength so it wouldn't matter if you were right or left handed you could draw a bow with either hand and still maintain strength in the draw. Perhaps this is why I prefer drawing with my left. :)

but even to those who haven't used a bow that is sort of common sense. Yes, you use your dominant hand to pull the string. It doesn't matter what hand you use for a bow in Skyrim since you can't use magic or any other weapons when using both hands. /thread

If Todd takes my 9000 letters on the subject seriously, guards will instantly kill anyone they see holding a weapon in their left hand who isn't dual-wielding.

Yes, most right handed people draw the bow with their power side. I never used a bow before, but I know that's how it is with a lot of things. Power side cocked back, except some people who prefer to have it in front.

Confirmed with Pete you can wield weapons with left with nothing in the right, that's about as left-handed as we can get. While I seriously don't get why they couldn't have flipped the rest of the animations, I'll let it go for archery since the quiver would need to be flipped as well.

Yes but surely it seems like a not so hard task to do switching the positioning of the quiver. :P

I shoot with my left but I'm right handed. My left eye is dominate, doesn't matter what hand you are. It all depends on your dominate eye.

The rate at which people complain about hand preference in Skyrim. Is too damn high.

It's not like you were allowed to use left hand for anything but shield before Skyrim. Stop whining.
