Ok, So Im making a website for my Clan the Brotherhood of Steel. I was just wondering if I could get into any trouble with them for useing the name some rank names for my own personal use. Im not profiting off it so It shouldnt be a problem right?

I think it is the wrong place but I don't think you'll get in trouble for a clan named the Brotherhood os Steel.

I think you can due to the copy righting but i'm not sure, just make sure to give them credit just incase so you wont get in trouble.

I highly doubt it, but give them credit anyway.

If you make a clan called bos for cod or something to run on gbs, and Bethesda pulled some copyright infringement stuff out I would be shocked. Its like a free advertisemant for 1. I really don t think they would care 2 And 3 if they did care there is something wrong with them

Sorry for the late response -

Off-hand, I don't see as how Bethesda would have a problem with this. Doing a quick Google search shows that there's already quite a number of various clans out there called "Brotherhood of Steel" - I don't see Bethesda singling you and suing you or anything. :)

Names used on the web hold no copyright as I understand it. You can call yourself Obama or whatever without any problem.

I was on a forum critical of a company once, where there were stooges of the company planted, some bright sparks started a spoof web site with members the same names as the stooges, having them make hilarious disrespectful posts .... ah those were the days of great fun, I remember them well. (disrespect of the company is allowed on here anyway).

That's just an example.

You will be ok using the name. You could call it the Brotherhood of Sitruc, and I couldn't stop you. go ahead.

I would suggest you review your understanding of Trademark law before offering similar advice.

Ianol, but just because its on the web, trademark law doesn't simply go away. if you use someone elses trademark without permission you can face legal trouble.

Your name, my name, and Obama is not a trademark ... "trading under the name".

I wasn't referring to trading names, however it is possible to use a spoof of a traded name if it is clear that it is spoof ... those that own the traded name may well try to contend that it is clearly indicated enough that it is spoof, especially if the spoof is denegrating those that own the genuine trade name. The same way that TV spoof programs are made, in particular of the royal family, and of the government ... and who deserves spoofing more than the government ... it seems that they themselves are spoofing government. I don't think we need to get our knickers in a twist too much about it ... no company is going to take a teenage game-player to court over using "some rank names for my own personal use".

A person on another forum could use the name agent_c for example. You do not have copyright.
