Can we get new maps before the game is out?

Post » Tue Dec 29, 2009 7:47 am

Back when Oblivion came out, Bethesda released new maps of the provinces. Oblivion was released in the US on March 20, 2006, but according to the dates these maps were uploaded to the UESP wiki, they weren't released until March 31, which is after Oblivion came out. I'm the kind of person who can stare at a map of a fictional setting for a long time and just think about what might be there, and having new maps to look at before Skyrim comes out would be a dream come true for me. Judging by the events of the Infernal City, any new map released would be changed in a lot of ways. Boundaries will have expanded and contracted, and the shape of the terrain in certain areas, such as Vvardenfell, would have changed. Seeing these new changes would be a great treat for a cartography nerd such as myself, but I don't want to wait until the game is out to see them. So with this thread I'm asking, Bethesda, could you guys release new maps at some point before the game is out?

And so we have something to talk about in this thread, does everyone want new maps as badly as I do? Or do you not care all that much?

Aw, geez, that would be so freaking great. I would love to check one out and start imagining what the landscape would be like, and get clear ideas in my head of where I'd like to go (in the game) first. For me, being able to visualize where events took place would really tie the games together. And add to the feeling of exploring this big land.

I really hope this gets noticed and BGS or one of the game sites with a map uses it as a game teaser.

Well, the current maps that are out there should do well enough, I'd think... I mean, I don't think the borders are changing all that much. Bethesda (surprisingly) hasn't added much political tension to their games and, aside from some minor content, I'm not sure there is much of anything going on in Tamriel that would effect borders.

You should really read The Infernal City. Black Marsh invaded Morrowind. Red Mountain erupted, drastically re-shaping Vvardenfell. The Thalmor have taken over Valenwood. The Empire has fallen apart and rebuilt itself, but with fewer provinces under their control. The political landscape has in fact changed drastically and we need a new map to reflect that.

I would love to see a new map before the game is released. The sooner the better! It would give us good insight not only into the exact amount of land that will be playable in the game, but also to any sort of changes that have been made from political tensions in Tamriel. Plus we could get a better idea of the geography of Skyrim, and some major landmarks.

Here is a map I found that I think you'll like. It's a topographic map for all of Tamriel!

I've been staring at it and imagining what's there, like you.

Thanks, but I've already seen it, as well all unofficial maps of Tamriel listed on the Imperial Library. What I want is something that no unofficial map can provide, which is a map of Tamriel exactly as it is during the events of Skyrim, and that can only be produced by Bethesda.

I enjoy maps. I can sometimes take a map and, from a mere name with a dot attached, imagine what a city might look like. Topological and climate maps are some of my favorites... And treasure maps!

I too would like a map of the 'new' world of Tamriel after the events of The Infernal City. The Infernal City did destroy towns and areas in the novel so it would be nice to see a map that reflects that.

On a side note; I wonder if you climb to the Jerral Mountins in TES V; if they will let you see the Imperial City (obviously just as a back drop) but I think that would be a nice touch to the game.

Yes, I really want this to happen. Not only am I a map nerd, (I have game related and real life ones all over my walls) but I'm also interested to see a new map with all the changes the infernal city has brought and it's sequel will bring. Not to mention what might change in the time between the books and Skyrim.

I want to see a map with the same art as the one that came with Morrowind. Fully in detail so I can plan where I wan't to treasure hunt.

I really should... I have it, but my reading list is about 353454 books. I just need to finish up the last Dragon Age book and I'll start it.

But, like, just how canon is all that?

I'm pretty sure it's all official canon. I would think Bethesda approached Keyes with the idea of writing a TES book to continue the story, and not vice versa.

Edit: OT Yes I would very much enjoy new maps to see how the Empire looks post-Infernal City.

I'd love to see a map of Skyrim; just so long as it's not some drab brown thing that came with Oblivion. I want details, the feeling it was handdrawn, with little caves...

Heck, just get Mike Wagner to make the map like he did for Morrowind/Tribunal/Bloodmoon and I'll be very happy :D

I really want to see the devastated southern region of Vvardenfell, and the expanded borders of the other provinces. I would also like to see the domains of the new countries (if they're still separated by Skyrim's release). If the second book to the IC comes out before Skyrim then it should be on the back pages. If Skyrim comes out first, then I would like to see it updated on release or pre-release day. If were ever so lucky, which from the speculation thread we know we are not, we might see it in the new Game Informer. But I as an eternal pessimist believe we won't see it until the day of 11-11-11 or later.

I know that they tried pretty hard to make it fit, but Infernal City takes place 40 years after the Oblivion Crisis (so says the back of the book itself, which I have in front of me, which I will start reading today) and the trailer, I think, clearly points to Skyrim being definitely within 10 years of Oblivion, I'd almost venture to say within 5 years. So from the attitude of people in Oblivion, it seemed that, for the most part, things will start off in a chaotic mess where people don't care much about politics and borders, making them remain mostly the same. Though I'd be quite happy if this were to change through the game, so the outside world has some fluidity.

Yep. Do also want. Wouldn't be that hard to shove one between two screenshots when they are released, right ? :(
