Can't get Oblivion to play

Post » Fri May 07, 2010 3:50 am

I create a character and enter play, at first scene I crash. This is my second install of Oblivion; I haven't played in five years. Since then, I built a new computer. I have all the latest drivers. My specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, ASUS Phoenix-AwardBIOS v6.00PG, Intel Core 3 Duo CPU 3.00GHz, 5120MB RAM, DirectX 11, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Is it possible to be overpowered for Oblivion?

I should add, I patched with the official patch.

Try deleting your Config. Settings (Documents/My Games/Oblivion/Oblivion.INI). Oblivion doesn't clean up after itself very well when you uninstall it, and this is a very common source for random crashing on fresh re-installations. Unless this is the first time the game was ever installed on your PC, in which case, do it anyway, just to be safe. This is completely harmless to do.

Also, it would be nice to know if you are running any mods, as well.

No mods. And this install of Oblivion is a fresh install. Oblivion wasn't on this computer before. I will delete the ini file and make no change to configurations, just to see if the game will play that way.

If that doesn't work then can you post your dxdiag please so that our resident experts may take a look and hopefully solve your problem.

Thanks for replies. I did a search and discovered my saved games from the past were brought over from my old hard disk. My brother takes care of my computer, so he had done that. I was really surprised to find all my old saved games and characters from Oblivion five years ago. I deleted the ini files there and now can play.

I want to start fresh in Oblivion because I sorely miss a long playing rpg. I hope Skyrim will be another long playing game.
