I've gotten up to the bit where I've entered the institute, and I have talked to everyone there is to talk to and its time to return to the surface. I've gotten the chip from Li that allows me to fast travel between the institute and above ground, but when I go to my pip-boy and select a place to fast travel to, it comes up with "Fast travel is currently unavailable from this location". I've checked online and apparently this is a problem with a few other people. I'm wondering if there's a way to get fast travel back and I hope there is because I'm very keen on getting back to the story line.

Yeah I was dreading that. My only save outside of the institute was like 4 hours of gameplay behind. Guess I'll have to svck it up

Where are you at within the Institute? There are several side rooms like the Bioscience department, Advanced Systems, etc. that are contained within their own cells. Fast travel from these rooms isn't possible. It's only possible from the more open, central portion of the Institute. This may not be the case for you, but it's a thought.

One you talked to everyone and got the chip installed in your pipboy you need to return to Father. You should get a quest update to talk to him. After you talk with him and he gives you a quest to retrieve a synth, you'll see a notice appear on the top left of your screen informing you that you may now fast travel in and out of the institute.

I never went back to talk to Father, myself. Instead, I took the central elevator back to where I arrived. When the room I'd spawned in didn't immediately send me back, I figured I had to progress a quest, so I dropped the Network Scanner Holotape into the terminal just outside the room. At that point, I was able to leave.
